SHMUPS
By MetalVinnie
1296 SHMUPS! Split playlists for arcade and consoles.
Download the .xml files and place them in your LaunchBox\Data\Playlists directory.
Here's how many games are in each playlist:
SHMUPS (Arcade): 501*
SHMUPS (Dreamcast) 24
SHMUPS (Game Gear) : 9
SHMUPS (GB/GBC) : 42
SHMUPS (GBA): 21
SHMUPS (Genesis) : 70 (including Sega CD and 32x games)
SHMUPS (MSX): 144**
SHMUPS (Naomi): 18
SHMUPS (NES): 132 (including Famicom and Famicom Disk games)
SHMUPS (PS1): 69
SHMUPS (PS2): 34
SHMUPS (PSP): 24
SHMUPS (Saturn) 54
SHMUPS (SMS): 20
SHMUPS (SNES): 39
SHMUPS (Turbo Grafx): 99 (including Turbo CD/PC Engine/PC Engine CD/SuperGrafx games)
SHMUPS (All-in-one) 1296
*2 games in the Arcade list, 'Pilot Kids' and 'Zero Gunner', will require a Sega Model 2 emulator for them to work. These two games are made by Psikyo...quality SHMUPS.
**The MSX list still needs a bit of work, there are a few 3D/rail shooters that need to be edited out. A future update will probably have less games in the list.
What these playlists have:
2D and 2.5D horizontal and vertical SHMUPS
Some classic fixed screen SHMUPS (Space Invaders, Galaga, Asteroids, etc.)
mostly No Clones (These lists were handpicked. Lots of 'Same game, different name' games were filtered out)
No Run 'N Gun style games (Contra, Metal Slug, Turrican, etc.), but some hybrid games did make it on here.
No 3D Shooters (Afterburner, Galaxy Force II, Space Harrier, etc.)

PLAYLISTS for many Platforms
By Robin55
From my experience LaunchBox does not mind Playlists being added that contain game names that are not in your library, It will simply ignore games that are in the XML but are not contained in you library. This seems to also apply to Arcade Games Added as MAME games, LaunchBox simply reads the Launchbox Database ID number of the game in the XML and automatically knows where the game belongs. If you find Bigbox runs slow after adding these playlists it is probably due to having a much smaller library than is contained in the XMLs Simply open launchBox and edit the playlist select the "games" tab and scroll to the bottom and there will be a list of missing games, simply delete these, holding down the delete key and restart LaunchBox.
UPDATE: Added RUN & GUN Genre Playlist for all systems. Also tidied up some of the other playlists.
UPDATE: MOTOR games added this has the same contents as the DRIVING games xml.
I have full Hyperlist collections of games for a lot of Consoles and Handhelds and I have made "Genre Playlists" for EVERY single game in my library with one XML playlist for each Genre. The systems Included are: - Arcade/Mame from 1987 to present.
- Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 1, Sony PlayStation Portable, Sony PlayStation Portable Minis,
- Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo, Super Famicom, Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo Disk System, Nintendo Famicom, Nintendo DS, Nintendo GameBoy Advance, Nintendo GameBoy Color, Nintendo GameBoy.
- Sega Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Sega Mega Drive (Europe), Sega Mega Drive (Japan), Sega Genesis (USA), Sega CD (USA), Sega Mega CD (Europe), Sega 32X, Sega Master System, Sega Mark III, Sega SG-1000, Sega Game Gear.
- Atari Jaguar, Atari 7800, Atari Lynx
- NEC Turbo Grafx, NEC Turbo Grafx CD, NEC PC-FX
- SNK Neo Geo AES, SNK NEO GEO CD, SNK Neo Geo Pocket
- Commodore Amiga CD32
- Panasonic 3DO
- Amstrad GX 4000
-Bandai Wonderswan, Bandai Wonderswan Color I have also made "Intro Videos" for each Genre. They can be downloaded here along with the logos: I have split the full collections of these games into the following "Genre Playlists": - Fighting Games
- Shoot Em' Ups
- Light Gun Games
- Beat Em' Ups
- Run & Gun Games
- Shooter Games
- Sports Games
- Racing Games/Motor games
- Rhythm Games
- Horror Games
- Flying Games
- Platform Games
- Puzzle Games
- Role Playing Games
- Strategy Games
- All Games
- Board Games & Card Games I am very strict on what game goes into what category, for example wrestling and boxing games I put into the Sports category instead of the Fighters category. Horror is just there for fun, It only contains some games that I like so only add if that category interests you. I know their might be the odd mistake here and there but organizing all these games took a lllllllong time so the odd mistake was bound to happen either way its a good starting point.
Anyway to anyone who finds these useful, enjoy! If you find my work of use could you please consider donating to my Patreon found here: https://www.patreon.com/RobinLevingstone9,354 downloads

The Best?!?
By Mr.Laor
A collection of playlists and clear logos for the top games from a a large number of consoles, computers, and handhelds. Most folders contain a Gold, silver, bronze, and best playlist (which combines the bronze, silver, and gold)
Below you will find links to all the spreadsheets for the sources I used to compile the data. REMINDER: These are not in order of “Best” these are in order of mentions based upon aggregating a number of “Best of” lists. In some cases, smaller lists, or higher ranked games were given greater weight to arrive at a more balanced list.
I have omitted some systems - either because there weren’t enough quality games released, games are still being released, or I don’t have them in my Launchbox set-up (yet).
These took me a long time to compile. I hope they are helpful.

Beat 'Em Ups
By MetalVinnie
266 Beat 'Em Ups (Split playlists for MAME and Consoles)
The .xml files:
Beat Em Ups (Arcade): 133 Games for MAME
Beat Em Ups (NES): 28 Games (17 NES + 2 Famicom)
Beat Em Ups (SNES): 60 Games (37 SNES + 18 Super Famicom)
Beat Em Ups (Genesis): 45 Games (40 Genesis/Megadrive + 5 Sega CD)
Beat Em Ups (Turbo Grafx): 22 Games
Download the .xml files and place them in your LaunchBox\Data\Playlists directory.
Issues with Metadata and Launchbox IDs:
'Avengers' (Arcade) is a vertical scrolling beat 'em up made by Capcom with no Launchbox ID. Launchbox will default the Metadata and Media to 'Avengers In Galactic Storm'. That is the wrong game. The Mame rom filename is 'Avengers'. Do not attach any Metadata, title it exactly as 'Avengers' in the Edit Game window in Launchbox, and Emumovies should give you the proper media (although you may have to surf around to get a clear logo).
There's an arcade prototype game called 'Judge Dredd' made by Midway. It is a beat 'em up and has no launchbox ID. This is confusing because there is a light gun game called 'Judge Dredd' made by Acclaim. The Mame rom file is 'jdreddp'. Title it as 'jdreddp' in Launchbox, and Emumovies will give you the media for it. Hit ok and edit it again if you want to change the title without losing the media. Just don't title it as 'Judge Dredd' or it will get mixed up with the other game. I named it 'Judge Dredd Prototype'.
For the SNES list I added the Rushing Beat Series: 'Rushing Beat', 'Rushing Beat Ran: Fukusei Toshi', and 'Rushing Beat Shura'. These are the Japanese but superior versions of Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers and The Peace Keepers, respectively. No metadata for the Japanese versions and I'm still looking for some of the media.
'UFO Kamen Yakisoban' for the Super Famicom also has no launchbox ID, but there is media for it on Emumovies as long as it is titled exactly like I have it here.
............
It took about a week and a lot of research to put these lists together and I tried very hard to get every Beat 'Em Up for each platform. But, I was pretty strict about what made it on the lists. There aren't any one-on-one 'Fighters' in these lists, that's a whole other category. I also kept away from 'Hack n Slash' games which can be categorized as Action/Platformers.
Please let me know if there are any games that should be on these lists. I'm sure I missed a few.

Run N Gun
By MetalVinnie
317 Run N Gun style games (Split playlists for Arcade and consoles)
The xml files:
Run N Gun (Arcade): 121 Games*
Run N Gun (Genesis): 54 Games
Run N Gun (NES): 66 Games
Run N Gun (SNES) 53 Games
Run N Gun (Turbo Grafx) 23 Games
*2 Games in the Arcade list, 'Dolphin Blue' and 'Metal Slug 6', require a Sammy Atomiswave emulator. Try Demul.
Download the .xml files and place them in your LaunchBox\Data\Playlists directory.
Some thoughts about these lists:
The Run N Gun category can have a few grey areas and can have a few matters of opinion. Some lists I have seen are strictly 'Guns' only. But I added a few that have other kinds of projectiles. Some of the games on here are more 'Platformer' than they are 'Run N Gun'. I was a bit skeptical about adding 'Mega Man' in these lists, and I'm not sure if they are proper Run N Gun games. But he runs and he shoots, so I think that qualifies. Also, a few games on here are hybrid games that are also on the SHMUPS lists. Check out 'Rendering Ranger R2' for SNES/Super Famicom and 'Crossfire' for Genesis, for example.
Have fun,

2D Arcade Fighting Games
By Charco
Hi guys,
I created a playlist of 2D arcade fighting games and thought I'd share it. This is not an exhaustive list. There are 133 games from MAME, Atomiswave, and Naomi. You will need the MAME and Demul emulators installed.
All the Neo Geo and Capcom ones are included. I was hoping the community could collaborate on this one as there are plenty games missing I'm sure, but at least this initial list will get the ball rolling on a bigger list of games.

Lordmonkus' Best of 2600 List
By Lordmonkus
This my personal Best of 2600 list.
Some of these games are part of my list because I grew up playing them, others are just there because they are classics but the vast majority are there because they are actually still fun to play today. I tried not to put many arcade ports on here but there is a couple if they were actually really good ports. There are a couple of improvement hacked roms which are homebrews and not hacks that you would need to get and they are freely available over on http://atariage.com/index.php they are not copyright protected so there is no worry about that.
Space Rocks thread and download http://atariage.com/forums/topic/197315-space-rocks-2600
Pac-Man (8K) post and download http://atariage.com/forums/topic/229152-new-pacman-for-atari-2600/page-37#entry3298369
Here is the list of games in the playlist file and a short blurb about it:
Adventure - Not really a favourite of mine but it is a classic 2600 game.
Atlantis - Sort a Missile Command clone but different enough and unique.
Barnstorming - Fly through barns, what other games offer this ?
Beamrider - Another game that isn't really a favourite of mine but many people like it so it's here.
Berzerk - Arcade port but really well done.
Boxing (Activision) - This game is a great 2 player vs game, really fun button mashing action.
Chopper Command - Horizontal shooter Defender clone but by Activision so you know it's good.
Communist Mutants From Space - That name alone makes it great but it is a very good Space Invaders clone.
Cosmic Ark - Shoot asteroids and abduct people, how can you go wrong ?
Dark Chambers - Closest thing to Gauntlet on the 2600.
Demon Attack - Probably the best Space Invaders clone similar to Phoenix but it's an Imagic game and looks great.
Dolphin - It's like Ecco the Dolphin only it's on the 2600.
Dragonfire - Steal treasure from a dragon, nothing else needs to be said.
DragonStomper - Insane RPG game for its time, try it out.
Enduro - Awesome racing game, Outrun before Outrun.
Frostbite - Mix of Q-Bert meets Frogger but with a unique twist, fun game.
H.E.R.O - It's freaking H.E.R.O. arguably the best game on the system.
Keystone Kapers - Fun game I played for many hours as a kid.
Laser Blast - Fun Space Invaders in reverse, you play the invader destroying the base.
Official Frogger - This was made by Starpath for the Super Charger addon. It looks great, you have to see it in comparison to the Parker Bros version.
Pac-Man (8K homebrew) - This one you need to get from Atariage forums. This is how Pac-Man should have been on the system.
Pengo - Fun puzzle game.
Phoenix - Space Invaders clone but I played it a lot as a kid so it's on here.
Pitfall and Pitfall II - 'Nuff said.
River Raid - Also 'nuff said, play it if you never played it.
Sea Quest - Fun underwater horizontal shooter.
Solaris - Late release for the system, looks great and is a lot of fun.
Space Rocks - This is another Atariage homebrew and is the best version of Asteroids on the 2600. The original Asteroids is left off because of this version.
Spider Fighter - Another Activision games and great fast paced shooter.
Stampede - Rope cows, how many games has this ? A lot of fun and played it a lot as a kid.
Starmaster - First person space combat and another Activision game.
Survival Island - Another Starpath Super Charger addon game, swim to the island without getting eaten.
Tutankham - Raid tombs and steal treasure.
Yars Revenge - System exclusive and a classic.

Nintendo Entertainment System - Best of 20 / 50 / 100
By Mr.Laor
Hey Folks,
In conjunction with the project I'm working on, I have compiled three "best of" lists for the Nintendo Entertainment System. I have included a top 20, 50, and a 100.
Here's a link to the explanation of the project I've been working on. It includes all Nintendo home consoles. More playlists to follow. Hope this helps some of us with large collections or are new to retro gaming.
Let me know what you think.
UPDATE : I've added three more playlists: Top 10% (73 games), Top 20% (143 games), and Top 25% (180) games.

Top NES Games
By alaharon123
The definitive top NES games. Included is four files so you can use whichever works for you: Top 4, 10, 16, and 29. If you want best 65, there's another file on the forum by Jason Carr. I'd recommend the top 4 or top 10
All the top games lists seem opinionated so I decided to make a list that would just be the games most people agree belong on such a list without anyone's personal idiosyncrasies (If this was my personal list you'd see Solar Jetman, but that's a niche game).
In case anyone cares, this was my process. First I looked through 14 Top nes lists, and made a list of games that were in most of them. I then gave them point values based on how many lists they were in and how high in those lists, and deleted those with low scores. Next, I compared each of the games to each other (looking at each list that two games are in and seeing which is higher than the other the majority of the time). I then ordered them based on that and deleted the bottom ones (sorry Duck Hunt, you're always at the bottom of the list). At this point, I had 29 games and decided to go with that number rather than delete four games just for the sake of having a round number (though I'm not sure that the bottom three games belong, they sort of teetered on the edge of being included or dropped). I split them into groups based on where there was a decent drop from one game to the next, though this was much more apparent in tier 1->2->3 than 3->4.
Here's the list if you want to see it before downloading the xml:
Tier 1:
1 Super Mario Bros. 3
2 The Legend of Zelda
3 Mega Man 2
4 Metroid
Tier 2:
5 Super Mario Bros.
6 Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
7 Bionic Commando
8 Contra
9 (Mike Tyson's) Punch-Out!!
10 Final Fantasy
Tier 3:
11 Super Mario Bros. 2
12 Kirby's Adventure
13 Tetris (preferably tengen)
14 River City Ransom
15 Crystalis
16 Ninja Gaiden
Tier 4:
17 Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
18 Castlevania
19 Mega Man 3
20 Bubble Bobble
21 Blaster Master
22 Tecmo Super Bowl
23 Dragon Warrior III
24 DuckTales
25 Excitebike
26 Kid Icarus
Tier 4.5
27 Metal Gear
28 R.C. Pro-Am
29 Dragon Warrior
Notes:
Although you'd think that this method would miss out on games in a series thanks to different lists having different entries, I found that this was not the case. Even pooling games from a series that no single entry made it did not make any series make it. At best you got something like Duck Hunt, a game at the bottom of every list.
That being said, I did pool the nintendo version of tetris with the tengen version. Most lists had only one, but no list specified nintendo over tengen and some did vice versa, so I counted nintendo tetris as tengen tetris (except for one list that had both)
Personal note, do not play the gba version of Super Mario Bros 3. Play either the NES or SNES version. The GBA version might have some extra features, but restarting from the level rather than the world ruins the game
Also, although it's on the list, don't play the nes version of Metal Gear. Play either the msx2 version or the slightly updated port included in the ps2 Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence disk 2 and the xbox 360, ps3, and psvita Metal Gear Solid 3 HD edition
That's all, enjoy!

*Disclaimer - This ini file is to be used with JoeViking245's Create Playlists from MAME category ini files plugin (link to that below).
Have your cake and eat it too! The All Killer/No Filler lists found on BYOAC, and more recently adopted by our own @Lordmonkus on the LB forum are really nice lists, but they were never intended for collections that have full rom sets. I mean the whole idea of All Killer/No Filler is to pair down your collection to have only the best games. This ini file will let you create All Killer/No Filler Playlists from your existing full MAME rom set. When finished importing, you can browse your paired down playlists of only the best, or switch over to the full set whenever you like.
The included ini file was tested with MAME 0.234 and Launchbox 11.15 and includes the following categories so you can create your own Playlists.
[All Killer No Filler - Horizontal Classics] [All Killer No Filler - Vertical Classics] [All Killer No Filler - Beat 'Em Up/Hack 'N Slash] [All Killer No Filler - Platformers] [All Killer No Filler - Puzzle] [All Killer No Filler - Run 'N Gun] [All Killer No Filler - Horizontal Shmups] [All Killer No Filler - Vertical Shmups] [All Killer No Filler - Sports] [All Killer No Filler - Vs. Fighting] [All Killer No Filler - Combined] [All Killer No Filler - The Monkus List] - An alternative and smaller list than the combined list. [Spinner Games] [Spinner Racing Games] [Trackball Games] [Lightgun Games] [Vertical Arcade Extended List] - All vertically oriented games. As you can see, I've included a few non All Killer lists as well for cab enthusiasts.
Some of the lists have glaring omissions such as no Contra (Super Contra is present though) or Primal Rage. I believe these may be imperfect games or there is some other reason Launchbox doesn't import them. I removed these games from the lists.
For simplicity's sake, I also removed any instances of alternate ROMs used for different player layouts. For example, only one instance of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is in the lists, no 2 player version is included since Launchbox does not show these by default when the Import Clones as additional versions (Recommended) radio button is selected during the MAME ROM import process.
Future versions of MAME or Launchbox may not play friendly with the naming of some of the ROMs in the lists and they might not import, but as of MAME 0.234, all games in each list should import without error. This was tested with a MAME 0.234 merged set as well as a MAME 0.234 non-merged set. I assume a split set should be fine as well.
For what it's worth, I know Launchbox creates pretty good Playlists already. The All Killer lists have been curated over the years by enthusiasts that want only the best games. These have always been my favorite sets of ROMs and I wanted to share a different way to use them with the community. Could I have just shared the Playlist xmls? Sure. This was more fun though.
In order to use the ini file you must install JoeViking245's Create Playlists from MAME category ini files plugin found at the link below. Instructions on it's use can also be found there. The All Killer.ini file should be placed in the ../MAME/ini/folders/ folder wherever you have your MAME installed.
Special thanks to @JoeViking245 for his amazing plugin.
