That's what I'm trying to figure out.  But I know this: yesterday it worked fine and today it doesn't after the upgrade and the controller is not working well WITHIN the Bigbox interface.  So I've not ruled out the LB upgrade yet.  Seems awfully coincidental.

I have not fixed the problem, but the good news is that it does NOT appear to be a LB problem.  It appears to only be a problem with WIRELESS controllers on my PC.  Luckily I had some wired controllers to test and those work fine within LB and within my emulators.  The strange thing is that it was wireless controllers that I have been using recently to play, so I'm still not sure what changed with those. But I'll refrain from posting about this again on this thread unless it turns out to be LB related.

Edit: well my wireless controllers work fine in every game/application except for BB and the emulators.

Edit 2: my theory is that controller inputs are being registered both as controller inputs and keyboard strokes which explains the erratic behavior within BB/emulators that seem to be doing two things with one button press.

Edit 3: I think I've resolved it.  The culprit was the Steam client controller configuration for default Desktop Layout.  I don't know what changed but Steam was registering "desktop mode" button hits when I was using my controller within LB/BB/emulators.  I don't know why it only affected wireless Xbox controllers, but oh well.  So as an example to help anyone else, the 'B' button on my Xbox controller is mapped to "Spacebar" in the Steam Desktop Layout.  And "spacebar" is mapped to Fast Forward in the Retroarch emulator.  So hitting 'B' would cause the normal in-game action as well as set the emulator into FF mode.

Launchbox has nothing to do with your controls in emulators.

  3. This update messed up my ability to play with controllers.  Inside games the buttons are all jacked up.  Hitting the Start button now takes my N64 games out of fullscreen.  Hitting the 'A' button now make my NES games fast-forward!  Simply trying to scroll up and down in BigBox now scrolls so fast even when I'm simply pressing the down/up on the D-pad for an instant.  What happened?  How do I fix this?  I don't know why I do this to myself. I should never install an update, rookie mistake.

  4. So I ended up going ahead with my idea yesterday before I saw your post, but I think I made the right choice.  Everything was successful and I've not had any problems.  Basically my steps were:

    1. Copy the new set into a folder at the same folder level as the previous set (helpful to include the version number - 0.251 - in the folder name)
    2. In LB use the "MAME Full Set Importer" tool and point it at the new folder.
    3. Tell LB to update your existing MAME emulator (to keep settings I assume) and it will download and install the correct emulator version.
    4. I downloaded my assets after the fact and I ended up with a lot of duplicate assets but using the cleanup tool has mostly solved that.

The result is: all playlists appear to be intact.  I was using LB's built in "Favorites" flag to build my Favorites playlist and that transferred just fine.  All other auto-playlists (genre, etc.) are still there and include the additional games I added in this set (previously I did not have a full set).  I did not end up with any duplicate games, so LB was smart enough to recognize that by itself.

  5. Hi, I want to update my MAME Set to a much newer version.

    1. Do I simply re-run the Full Set Importer, point LB to the new ROMs, and LB will reference the new ROMs and use the newer version of MAME?
    2. What happens to the old ROMs within LB?
    3. Will any of my custom playlists (i.e. Favorites) be affected?
    4. If I mess this up will the LB backup restore even this kind of step?

If you are on a version of Launchbox with the badges feature you can turn on "broken" badge option and then see games easily that show the broken badge. Or if you just want them all in one listing just create a new playlist for broken games and set it to auto-populate for the "broken" field.

Perfect, the playlist idea will work just fine.  Thank you.  But that's interesting, I hadn't heard of other versions of LaunchBox with a badges feature...  I'm on 10.15.  Is it newer or older versions that have "badges"?

edit: nevermind, I found the badges feature!  cool

Ah cool, so both of those options are available in the import wizard? Can't remember seeing them...

I don't see the ability to hide BIOS ROMS in the import wizard.  I'm referring to the ROM Import wizard, are you talking about the MAME Full Set import wizard?  I'm afraid to run that again and mess up any thing that's already working (especially my favorites playlist).

Yep that would do it, roms change and evolve a lot in mame each month, so using the current mame with a 3 year old rom set will have a lot of issues. Mame's exe keeps its own db and has games marked as working/nonworking, and using a set that old you could be seeing games marked as working in the ui, but the games may not have be working that far back, so that set has damaged roms/files that the new mame is checking against and ofc can't find the files it expects.

That's exactly what I'm seeing in the UI.  Was wondering about that too.  Thanks!

Are you using the correct mame version for that set as using the incorrect mame version for the rom set you have will cause issues. Also as im sure you are aware, that set is like 3 years old now, lots of changes and advancements have been made in mame since that release.

and just search for mame 0.221 roms, i hear the archive site is pretty good :)

I am not using the same version of mame, I am using the latest (v.221).  Thank you, I'll try using the 0.193 version.

As far as the rom set, I could only find merged versions of 0.221...

  10. I downloaded a set of "non-merged" v0.193 (latest I could find).  I specifically sought out non-merged because I was under the impression that each game zip file contained all of the files needed to run that game.  However, I didn't want a library of thousands of games so I carefully narrowed the list down to about 1000.  Everything works fine except for a few games that I've noticed so far.  For example X-men 4 player (rom "xmen") doesn't work.  Mame gives me an error saying it's missing three files:

    065-eba04.10d

    065-eba05.10f

    xmen_eba.nv

Doing some searching online I found that those files are found in the "xmene" zip file.  I checked and indeed those files are in there.  So I copied that zip file into my library folder and tried again in Mame and it gives me the same error.  I don't understand anymore.  Why aren't those files included in the "xmen" zip file?  Why doesn't putting the "xmene" file into the library fix the issue?  I'm using X-men as an example, but I'd like to find a solution for all games with a similar issue.  Is there anyway to have Mame or Launchbox give me a list of all broken games?

  11. Aww man, too bad this isn't supported yet.  I'm migrating from GameEx which does support spinner/trackball scrolling and it is so useful.  You can really rip past games and quickly hone in on the one you want with precision.  That will probably be the feature I miss the most.

  12. Is there a way to delay (or perhaps even completely disable) the disappearing game/menu wheel?  I'm using the Unified custom theme and I'm speaking about the circular wheel that appears when you scroll up or down (either through consoles, playlists, or games).  I just think it disappears to quickly when you stop on a game.  Is this a theme setting or global to BigBox?

  13. When I go to "Download Platform/Playlist Theme Videos" there is a button there to "preview" the video selected.  When I click it, VLC player launches, appears to buffer, but then just gives up and doesn't play anything.  Any known way to fix this?  I thought there was an option to use VLC or another player, but I can't seem to find that option anymore.

  14. Let me start off by saying, I think I need to use multiple Stella emulators to accomplish what I want.  But I'm not sure, so please let me know if you know of a better way.  First, I'll explain what I'm trying to do, then I'll explain my current question about Stella.

What I'm trying to do: I'm trying to make specific Atari 2600 games playable that use the Kid's Controller.  These are games like Big Bird's Egg Catch and Cookie Monster Munch.  I'm ultimately using a Xbox gamepad for my controller.

My Question: The Kid's Controller is not supported by RetroArch (I confirmed in their forums).  However, it is supported by Stella.  The problem is that the controls for up/down/left/right or Action are NOT consistent from game-to-game.  For example, in Big Bird's Egg Catch to move left/right you press 5 and 6 on the Kid's Controller.  In Cookie Monster Munch you press 4 and 6 (and others for up/down/action).  So I figured that I just need to install multiple copies of the stand-alone version of Stella, configure each one for a single game, and then tell LaunchBox to use the correct version of Stella.  However, when I installed two copies of the stand-alone version of Stella they both seem to still be using the same configuration files.  So changing the input settings on one changes them on both.  So they're not really separate.  Is what I'm trying to do possible?

  15. Playlists (Platform Category) Clear Logo

    View File

This logo is useful if you have have configured a Platform Category to hold all of your playlists.  It's a small contribution compared to the great works of others on the site, but I thought others could use it too.  I found the white version to look better, but you have a choice of white or black.

  16. I created a universal "recently played" playlist that show the last played games across all platforms.  I've also added it to the Platforms view.  I would like for this playlist to be automatically selected when starting BigBox.  Is there a way to make a specific menu item (a playlist acting as a platform) the default when booting BigBox?
