There seems to be problem with the music... it doesn't play and if you look in the Gamedetails you'll see that the music entry under media is empty. Did i something wrong while importing it into my existing C64 dreams?

Based on your description, yes. You have to import the music files too.

Outstanding work but for some reason I can't access Retroarch from ingame, F1 menu, change volume, double Escape to quit etc. Retroarch Game Focus isn't active either.

That's because you have to hold down the enable hotkey button for those functions to work - F1, ESC, etc. are used in the C64 emulation itself, so to use RetroArch's hotkeys instead you have to hold down the enable hotkey key. It's Numpad Minus.

What would be the best way to update from a previously integrated C64Dreams version? I believe I would first have to delete the platforms, playlists and categories from Launchbox completely before integrating the new collection right?

That would be my suggestion, yes. You'll want to delete the previous C64 Dreams folder as well as the relevant image folders too i.e. not overwrite on top because overwriting wouldn't address any files that were outright removed in the update.

  4. A new hotfix is now available. This should be the last one. You can grab it here. This is a combination of the previous hotfix as well as new fixes so you only need to grab this one if you hadn't gotten the previous hotfix, and if you did install the previous one you can overwrite with this one. Like last time, this needs to be placed in the base folder next to Launchbox.exe and then extract/merge/overwrite. Make sure Launchbox isn't running when you do this.

    - Corrected joystick port mapping for players 2-4 in all games that used 3+ joystick adapters (multitap). Some were correct as-is, others needed adjustments. Games corrected are below:

    Frogs
    Hockey Mania
    Shotgun
    IK+
Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart's Super Off Road
    Bugbomber*
    SNAFU '64
    Zatacka

*the port mapping has been corrected but it needs to be noted that the joystick controls for ports 3 and 4 don't seem to entirely work - player 3 can't move up and down and player 4 can't use bombs. This has been true in every version of the game I've tested (and I've tested several). I've also tested the emulated Kingsoft adapter (which Bugbomber uses) in Joyride v1.6 and everything worked as expected there which makes me think that there is just something odd/wrong going on with this particular game.

    - Slightly adjusted aspect ratio for Mega Bezel as it was just a little bit wider than it should have been previously

    - Made some slight adjustments to brightness and color settings in 4k Mega Bezel presets

    - Corrected all custom cropping configs so that they now maintain the correct aspect ratio when using the Mega Bezel shader (standard shaders were unaffected). There are 96 games where this is relevant.

    - Changed Mega Thrusterball's auto-warp value to "Ignore Audio" to bypass load screen (which plays music)

    - Corrected Barry McGuigan World Championship Boxing and Cloud Kingdoms to use Joystick Port 1

    - Added missing notes overlay for Dominion

    - Updates the Extras plugin so that it will work with newer versions of LB; only relevant if you A) enable updates in the included version of LB or B) import into a separate newer version of LB

I've actually been hard at work on the next version already rather than taking my typical couple-month break from it. That's probably still going to happen at some point but I figured if I can keep going and not feel burned out I should. I have to kindof shift gears mentally when I'm working on C64 Dreams versus anything else so I guess if I can still maintain focus I should. I'm actually really excited about some of the new things that'll be in the next version, but that can wait until next time 😉

  5. You can't. C64 Dreams has to be a platform category to itself because that's the only way to have enough levels to have playlists for the different categories of content.

Platform Category > Platform > Playlists

    i.e.

    C64 Dreams > Magazines > Zzap!64

    C64 Dreams > Games > RPGs

    etc.

You can't have Computer (or Commodore 64 or anything else) > C64 Dreams > Magazines > Zzap!64 because it's too many levels.

Wow.. I feel as old as i should I guess.. Apparently I never tried selecting categories 😩. Thank you for your patience. Now I´ll just try to fix my original install or maybe just reuse yours 🙂

No worries! Glad to help. We all have those days haha 😅

I cant see how the renaming one of the folders would interfere with the design of it being stand alone?

Because the project isn't called "Launchbox C64 Dreams" so making the folder that you're presented with when unzipping it named that would be rather odd. When you install a game on Steam the folder it installs isn't called "Windows Doom Eternal" or "Steam Doom Eternal" either. C64 Dreams is what it's called, so that's what the folder is named. The C64 Dreams subfolder can function on its own regardless of Launchbox or any frontend and is portable, so it's also called C64 Dreams. It's not as complicated as you're making it out to be, you just have to read the instructions.

My screenshot was from testing your package in bigbox mode.

Then there's nothing wrong here to begin with. You just have to select the category on the left...

If you add your own license to my package this is what it will look like:

    990246360_C64Dreams4.thumb.jpg.4e3494ba38dafec89be2e9ccd53488d9.jpg

Choose the C64D category (the only option, because there are no other categories here) and it'll take you to this:

    488310442_C64Dreams5.thumb.jpg.2e54562e78c8d4f7819392df4865b784.jpg

"Games" will take you to the playlists within games. You can also choose "All games" from there, etc.

You can customize the views as you see fit. If you're using a controller you can change them with R3.

would've been so much less confusing if you would've named the launchbox folder "Launchbox C64 Dreams" or something to distinguish it from the subfolder.

C64 Dreams is designed to function as its own standalone package, so that's not going to happen.

I seem to get it working but when using bigbox I missed at least one game which was the first one I looked for "Bubble Bobble", but only in bigbox mode.

When i tried out your launchbox pack in bigbox mode i could not do anything except scroll through "favorites" and "recent" looking like screenshot i uploaded. What did i miss?

It's working fine here. You must have either not imported all the parents/playlists/platforms or something to that effect. Instructions for importing are in this post. You need to follow them.

  9. You're probably either pressing spacebar too soon after changing them or you're not pressing insert/eject disk again after changing them, something to that effect. You have to use insert/eject > next or previous disk > insert/eject again and then continue. After the the last eject/insert you sometimes need to wait a couple seconds to make sure it reads the new disk. It definitely works. I played Alice in Wonderland in particular not that long ago.

    Just tested for good measure:

Hey, did anyone tried to play Alice in wonderland? I get asked to insert side B and press spacebar... the other multidisk games did't request anything so far. Anyway I'm probably missing something but when pressing spacebar it goes to the next screen which is black and white with lines and text but nothing readable and nothing happened after several minutes.

    Thanks.

Some games do require manual disk swapping. Alice in Wonderland is such a case. The process for how to change disks is explained in the video.

  11. I made a hotfix for a couple of issues. I've added a link to the opening post as well.

    Download Hotfix

Place this in the base folder (next to Launchbox.exe) and extract/merge/overwrite. This makes the following changes:

-Updates the Extras plugin so that it will work with newer versions of LB; only relevant if you A) enable updates in the included version of LB or B) import into a separate newer version of LB (which doesn't exist yet)
-Fixes input mapping for players 2-4 in Frogs, Hockey Mania, and Shotgun

It also shows Combo + Start = Esc/Runstop.

No it doesn't. Start, by itself, is Runstop. Show controls is combo + start. When combo is held down whatever the button you then press would normally do is disabled and the combo function is performed instead. i.e. A is normally fire but Combo + A is save state (and not fire).

    9 hours ago, Guynamedbilly said:

So when I am playing a game and press Combo + Start, the image of the controls pops up for a second and then Retroarch closes.

Whatever is causing this is not related to what you're talking about. Quit is Combo + LB. So if it's quitting when you press Combo + start it's something weird happening with your controller. It could be you have something running in the background that's also reading controller inputs like say Xbox Gamebar. Steam can be setup to read them / do things as well. Both of these (and presumably other third party apps) can be configured to read inputs at all times to do things like focusing the Xbox app, focusing Steam, closing apps, etc. My suggestion would be to try disabling these one at a time and see when the issue resolves and go from there.

Sorry; one last question... I recall that when I previously setup the prior version of C64 Dreams, that there was a way to enable the magazines to be viewed offline (as opposed to an online webpage being opened upon clicking on them), but I can't remember how this is achieved, nor can I relocate the relevant information on how to do so.  Please could you be so kind as to jog my memory?

    Thank you.

Sure. All you have to do is go to C64 Dreams\C64 Dreams\Magazines\!XMLs and then copy the Magazines.xml from either the Default Local or Default Web folders, depending on which you want, and then replace the one in C64 Dreams\Data\Platforms. Make sure Launchbox isn't running at the time.

    Great stuff, @Zombeaver

I do have a technical question; I currently have the previous version of C64 Dreams installed within my Launchbox (along with multiple other system emulators) and I'm curious as to how I can update to the latest 0.60 release of C64 Dreams.  Is it as simple as downloading the latest version and copying the folders over to the relevant directory (whilst overwriting any and all matching filenames)?

    Thank you.

You'll need to delete the original first and use the new version. I wouldn't recommend overwriting on top because that wouldn't address files that were outright deleted between versions (so they shouldn't be there but wouldn't be overwritten / deleted if you copied the new on top of the old).

  15. Blog post for v0.60 on Zomb's Lair
    Download C64 Dreams v0.60 (DDL / Torrent)
Download local magazine module (optional but recommended!) (DDL)
    Game details spreadsheet

Version 0.60 of C64 Dreams is now available! It features 506 new games (6 duplicates were discovered in v0.45 - same game but with an alternate regional title - and have since been removed) brining the game count to 3500. It was a long road to get to this point - multiple events IRL slowed down progress on this update but I'm thrilled to finally be able to share it with you all!

I've prepared a brief overview video of some of the new features in v0.60 so check it out!

    New:

    • Created new playlists for RPGs and Shmups to facilitate quickly browsing these specific genres; more such playlists will be created over time as this is a work in progress
    • Added game-specific background music for as many games as possible in Launchbox - 2368 out of 3500 games now have music
    • Added new Mega Bezel shader options which are highly recommended if your GPU and CPU can handle it; a variety of screens and backgrounds are available of my own creation as well as some from TheNamec; you can find a lot more info on TheNamec's creations here: https://retrogamingpacks.blogspot.com

    • Made GPU Screenshots enabled by default

    Misc:

    • Remade every single 3D box in the collection - the rationale for this is that, originally, the 2000~ that I made were designed to mimic the same style as that used by a user on the Launchbox forums (marcoooo) who made a set of 3D boxes for C64 games, and his boxes had the logo for "The C64" (i.e. the plug and play device from a couple years ago) on them, which this project has no affiliation with (not that I have anything against them, I think it's a cool project) - this had always irritated my OCD, so I finally decided that I was going to remake them all from scratch without the logo, covering both the ones that I had created previously and all the ones from marcoooo's set that I was using; many cover improvements were made along the way so it was worth it in the end, but hoo boy was this a long and tedious undertaking
    • Replaced hundreds of box covers with higher quality ones
    • Added hundreds of new manuals, bringing the total to 1930, with 55% coverage - many of these were found thanks to the help of the amazing Smiling Spectre of the eXoDOS project, thanks again dude!
    • Changed all games to use 6581 SID instead of 8580 - I started noticing a few too many instances where things just didn't sound right with 8580 + digiboost; the SID and demoscene stuff are still set to 8580 unless I'd specified otherwise previously
    • Upscaled all bezels to 4k - there are some minor scaling artifacts when upscaling from the previously 1080p bezels to a higher resolution such as 1440p, but not when downscaling from a higher resolution
    • Upscaled all notes overlays to 4k
    • Upscaled all screenshots by 4x with nearest neighbor scaling to preserve quality - this increased the total filesize by less than 100MB but made them a lot easier to see in the process; some of the screenshots were relatively poor quality to begin with so in some cases this is just polishing a turd, but the vast majority of them are a nice improvement
    • Color and contrast corrected hundreds of screenshots (still a work-in-progress)
    • Added new column to game details spreadsheet to indicate source (CSDb, GB64, etc.) and added links to GB64 pages where relevant
    • Replaced "Text Adventure" column on game details spreadsheet with "Genre" and added genre tags for text adventures, RPGs, and Shmups; others will be added over time as this is a work in progress
    • Added additional games to Best of Vol. 7 and created new playlist for Best of Vol. 8
    • L'Abbaye des Morts has gone free to download so the rom for it is now included!
    • Linked hundreds of games to LBGDB entries that didn't exist when they were originally added
    • Added missing release date years wherever possible (only 22 games in the collection are missing this info now - cases where the release year is unknown)
    • Reset last played, play time, and play counts for all LB entries
    • Set all games installed status to yes in Launchbox
    • Added 4k variant of CRT-Easymode-Halation-C64 shader in Configurator

  16. Okay guys, the release candidate for C64 Dreams v0.60 is now up on my Discord. The plan, like last time, is to have this up for a week or two, address any issues that come up, and then put it up on Archive.org. I'll have the normal exhaustive changelog once it's released on Archive, but some highlights below:

    • 506 new games (there were 6 duplicates identified in v0.45 - same game but alternate regional title)
    • Game-specific background music added in LB for as many games as possible (2368 / 3500 currently)
    • New Mega Bezel options added to the configurator; these are accessible via C64 Dreams\C64 Dreams\Configurator.exe > Shaders > HSM Mega Bezel > double click "Enabled". Screen and background options can be set there as well. Keep in mind that this requires a pretty decent video card.
    • New playlists for Shmup and RPGs
    • Tons of media improvements
    • Tons of game version upgrades, fixes, etc.

Is the answer to c/p the contents of all the Zombeaver inis into the new per game config ini? Or am I missing something obvious that would allow current versions of the emulator to read the multiple inis?

Unfortunately it's not that simple. There's no easy way to just convert from one to the other. I have to go through and create new ones based on a combination of new testing and existing values that I'd documented on my spreadsheet previously. I have 137 out of 289 done currently.

I will be getting back to this eventually but my current project focus is on C64 Dreams until I finish up the next update.

Oh, one more easy suggestion for you... For the game "Beyond the Forbidden Forest", when the game first starts, it sits in "demo mode" until F7 is pressed. I think this confuses a lot of people, and they wonder why there are no monsters. Maybe you could add a popup or something to tell people to press it, or add "press F7 to start the game" to the notes on the spreadsheet :)

Sure. I made a notes overlay for it which will be in v0.60.

Are you going back through the alphabet and adding missing games?

I'm parsing through all of Gamebase64. The existing games that are beyond "P" are ones that I played as a kid, knew about already, were specifically requested by users, etc. The overall completion level, however, is based on a complete pass through every game in GB64, which is why the next version will be v0.60, as I'm about 60% of the way through it at this point.

Also, is it ok to suggest a couple of games?

Absolutely. With that said, no requests at this point will be in the next version, as all 500 new game slots are accounted for. I've added both games to the to-do list for post v0.60 additions.

I'll have more detailed info later, but things are getting pretty close at this point. I'm in the metadata and media creation phase currently (final phase of work for the update).

The best way to keep track of progress is on my Discord, and I will be posting a release candidate for v0.60 there prior to the standard wider public release.

    @Zombeaver

Thanks for sharing these and making it easy to setup!

Question about the PCSX2 core,  the bezel is reversed/rotated.  The other cores (Stella, Beetle, Flycast, etc) show fine.

The JVC label is at the top and reversed.  Its not a big deal, just wondering if there is an option to correct it.

This is really bizarre. The PCSX2 core is a mess so I guess this shouldn't surprise me. But yes, you could fix this. You'd need to make a custom core preset for it. Start up the game, then go to Quick Menu > Shaders > Shader Parameters then scroll down until you get to "Flip & Rotate" and set "Flip Viewport Vertical" to 1. Then go back > Save > Save Core Preset.
