My opinion is community. I believe the little child in us all, brings us all together.

I think such efforts like Yuzu should be done in countries like Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, or even Colombia. But mostly Venezuela. Since Japan hasn't recognized their government since 2019, Venezuelan business ventures are free to do what they wish with Japan's digital property and interpret it their own way. Also, I don't believe the Latin American retro gaming community has been marketted to enough.  And the US sanctions against Venezuela, no longer have the strengh it used to since most Latin American nations have reopened thier doors to Venezuelan trade and business. Which means, a business like Yuzu in Venezuela can sell to most American nations, except maybe the US, Canada, El Salvador, and now Argentina. A subsidiary in another country would possibly be able to sell to the US.

In such independent countries, ideas like Yuzu can flourish and would be welcomed warmly.

Or Yuzu can fight it. Either way, I believe the community needs a base in the Caribbean beaches of Venezuela for longevity, with an office in Colombia to do business transactions with the world.

Emulators aren't businesses though outside of some rare cases so "setting up shop" in Venezuela is not something that can happen.

Emulators are typically developed by hobbyists working in their spare time.

Nintendo while easy to beat up over some of their policies are generally pretty fair to the emulator community despite their anti emulation propaganda. The fact that this is gone to a full blown law suit leads me to believe they have actual proof that the Yuzu devs did break copyright laws here. Yes, emulators can be developed in an illegal way.

  2. Well I have no idea how the files are named and I can't find a rom set with a quick search. If they are named the same as Mames roms then maybe scraping as arcade may work.

You can suggest support for this on the bitbucket page.

  3. You don't "install a torrent file", you use the torrent file with a torrent client such as Qbittorrent which downloads the files. Once you have the complete Mame rom set on your hard drive in the location you want them then you use the Mame Fullset Importer in Launchbox to import them.

Why would LB skip the one file but import the others?

LB uses a "fuzzy match" system, it picked up the others because it had the games number in its file name, Sonic on its own is just too generic and was probably imported under another Sonic game as an additional app thinking it was a duplicate game.

Also how do I know the right names that LB wants?

We always recommend people use No-Intro rom sets for cart based systems and Redump for CD/DVD based systems. Those sets have very good naming schemes that have the games full title in the file name while putting extra details in brackets which LB will ignore in the scraping process.

It ignores games but imports BIOS files?  It seems LB is a bit wonky.

Like I said above, it probably put Sonic in with another game so it imported and didn't ignore it. It imported bios because you told LB to import them. LB itself doesn't know what files are games or not games.

Once I get Launchbox configured the way I want, will Bigbox use all of those settings & data to work it's magic?

    Yes.

Once I purchase BigBox, will I still be using LaunchBox to load and configure games or does BigBox have all that included as well?

    Yes.

Launchbox is the management side but can also be used as a launcher.
BigBox is the controller driven side that is designed to be used on a TV or a cabinet with a controller.

    Why do you recommend 4k?

The main reason is the vertical resolution on 1440p and 2160p are perfect integer scales of 240p so the pixel aspect ratio will be correct without any black borders at the top and bottom when using integer scaling in the emulator like Retroarch. With 1080p 240p does not scale perfectly, it's a 4.5x scale so you either end up with stretched pixels or black borders at the top and bottom when using integer scaling.

The monitor you linked would do the job to play the games perfectly fine and the price is good. But if cost isn't too much of an issue and you want "the best" solution I would suggest something that does 120hz and OLED. OLED is going to give you the blacks and contrast that comes close to CRTs, especially if you enable black frame insertion which you need at least 120hz or 240hz (multiples of 60).

OLEDs do jack up the price point though.

  7. Mame gets more resource intensive because it gets more accurate and accuracy requires more CPU power.

For lower end hardware not capable of the more recent versions of Mame check out the Mame 2003 Plus core in Retroarch which has a rom set specifically for it or the Final Burn Neo core in Retroarch.

  8. My opinion but to me software lists are a waste of time and space. Better off getting No-Intro sets for cart based systems and Redump sets for CD/DVD based systems. They are far more versatile, they work in any emulator and using Mame for most systems outside of arcade is very much hit or miss on the quality of emulation.\

This is just my opinion, people are free to do what they like and prefer.

  9. Mame for whatever reason has its gamma turned up and washes out the blacks.

I don't know if you can inject 3rd party shaders into Mame or not but Mame does have BGFX and HLSL shaders. I prefer HLSL and have made my own preset which corrects the gamma so that blacks are black. You can get my preset here:

  10. If you want  to go with a CRT TV then you are going to need to do some further research on using it with a PC. You cannot just simply hook it up and use it.

You can use any PC monitor, especially a newer more modern one but a 4K or 1440p OLED with variable refresh rate would be the best option. OLED will give you the blacks and contrast that will closely resemble a CRT, variable refresh rate will let you run arcade games at their proper speed without having screen tearing or forcing the games to run faster than intended at 60hz. 4K and 1440p will give the best CRT shader effects their best look because of the pixel density, plus 4K and 1440p will allow you to do integer scaling with zero or minimal black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
