A great resource is a subreddit I frequent quite often: https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdwin/.  There's a lot of great info there.  It's a great device... and Launchbox/Bigbox is just awesome with it.

Great, thanks for that. I have noticed that Big Box is a little slow on the GPD Win so I am using Retroarch for now. Hopefully performance improves with some updates though, I am hopeful.

Keep in mind... it gets hot... quite often too.  I use the fan on medium or high most of the time.  It works great for the most part.  It's a Low End Laptop, so you have to keep that in mind when running games on it.  I even tried Arkham Asylum on it... it plays pretty good, but does get pretty hot to the touch.  Regarding Launchbox, I keep the themes to a minimum (i.e. don't use cover flow).  The Video themes work great.  While on transit, people see what I'm doing and they're like, "that's so cool."  I usually keep my roms on the SD Card, but it's slower to read from... so it's not recommended to put your ISO games (ps1, sega cd, etc.) on there.  They work, but there is a bit of lag when the emulator is trying to read ahead.  That's why i also grabbed the USB stick.  It's low form factor is perfect for it.  At the time, I couldn't afford the 256GB one.  I'm not disappointed with my purchase.  Launchbox/Bigbox is a must for this.

That sounds great. I am most interested in indie and retro games, so I don't plan to play anything in 3D on this, actually. I have watched dozens of Youtube clips of people testing various games on the GPD Win. I get that it can run things like Overwatch and GTA V (barely) but I am more about games like Undertale and Axiom Verge. Hopefully these will not generate too much heat. In any case thanks for the info!

  3. I have already deleted the non-working copy, but I replaced it with a new installation and then copied the following folders along with Launchbox.xml and License.xml:

    • Images
    • Manuals
    • Music
    • Sounds
    • Themes
    • Videos

This seems to have me up and running again. Thank you for all the help.

For anyone else who encounters this: best off just reinstalling and restoring from a backup!

Well, this is a major bummer guys.  It's definitely not the norm as most systems have no issues running LB.

Just as a test, maybe try installing LB to a different drive, like C.. Don't just copy your existing files, but use the LB installer, and download the installer file first just to be sure everything is good.

This worked - if I install to another place, it opens normally, so it must be this install somehow. I suppose I will just rebuild everything here - if I copy over folders and database XML backup will that just work?

Thanks so much for your help, I appreciate it. The support network for Launchbox is amazing!

Apparently a common problem, number one reason is virus/malware infection but there's other possibilities as well. Hope it helps.

Thanks for sharing this! I went through the page and followed the instructions:

    • I only have Windows Defender installed for anti-virus, it is up to date and does not detect anything wrong
    • Drivers on the computer are up to date (it is an Alienware Alpha with 16gb of RAM, i3 processor and 860M GPU)
    • I completed the Windows file integrity scan, it did not find any "integrity violations"
    • I tried disabling Data Execution Protection as the page suggested but it wouldn't let me do this for Launchbox (it said Launchbox requires this)

I am pretty much at the point where I am willing to reinstall Windows to fix this, after trying so many things unsuccessfully.

If I remember correctly you need the 2015 runtime library, but I won't swear 100% that is correct.

I installed this, it did not fix the problem.

Also, is it possible that either of your anti virus type software is blocking Launchbox from running? Maybe try disabling them and try it as a test?

I don't have any anti-virus software installed, I literally reinstalled Windows 10 Pro about a week ago. There is almost nothing installed except for Steam and Launchbox.

Are you trying to launch Launchbox from a shortcut? Does it launch ok if you just browse file explorer to where you have your launchbox.exe and double click it? If not, try right clicking Launchbox.exe and selecting Properties and see if there is an Unblock button in that properties window.

For me Launchbox neither launches through a shortcut nor through browsing to the actual exe file. I right clicked Launchbox.exe and there is no Unlock option.

What does the Windows Application Event log show when you try to launch it? It may have some clue. Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer.  Expand Windows Logs and click Application

My first guess is that you are probably missing one of the dependency libraries. A little while back @ETAPRIME did a video and he has a Mega link to download the necessary dependencies. Here is the link. https://mega.nz/#!Q8UVXLRT!LVjgSIkpu826al7QhV32JtOg_jBUTE726RYXX_hqi7U

Being installed to D:\ drive doesn't matter at all, I have mine installed on H:\ drive.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried that and it still does the same thing. DirectX installed but the .NET framework was already up to date :/

Anything else I can try? Right now I am down to installing Launchbox every time I reboot my computer.

  8. I recently reinstalled Windows 10 on my HTPC and I have installed the latest version of Launchbox and put my license file in the same folder. Unlike on my previous install, Launchbox is installed to the D: partition which is just for emulation, if that makes a difference.

When I try to open Launchbox, the mouse cursor looks like it's thinking for 2-3 seconds and then goes back to normal, and nothing opens. I noticed this after I reboot - Launchbox opens after it's installed. So I can reinstall Launchbox in the same location, but when I reboot, it will not work again.

Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks in advance!

Are the ROMs being kept in the ROMs directory inside of your MAME root folder and if not have you pointed to where your ROMs are stored inside of your MAME.ini file?

They are, I have moved them to the /roms folder within each version of MAME so I didn't need to make any changes to the MAME.ini file. I am sure they are pointing to the right place. What I don't understand is why they cannot be opened.

  10. I have a situation where I have downloaded some non-merged rom sets but when I download the matching version of MAME they do not open. But when I try WinKawaks, they work. Any idea what I am doing wrong here? I have watched your setting up MAME tutorial on Youtube and read the MAME for Noobs thread here on the forum. No idea why only WinKawaks is working for me...

  11. I'm trying to figure out a way to do this also... I just imported thousands of games about 20% of which don't have cover art. Manually selecting them all even with ctrl and shift+click will take a long time. Adding this functionality to sort by cover art would be helpful.

Edit: it looks like this can be done through the "Audit" functionality. Awesome!

  12. This may be a stupid question, but - how can I remove a game's version from appearing in the title? Right now I have a lot of games which say things like "8 Eyes (U) [!]". I would like to remove the (U) [!] part automatically, since doing it manually for 1,000+ games will take a very long time. Thanks in advance for any help.

  13. Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a helpful and thoughtful reply. I loved Big Box before this but I am in awe of helpful and good spirited the community is.

I think I understand all of the instructions, I think the first option which you mentioned makes more sense in my case. I went to controller settings and see an option for "Generic Gamepad Configuration Support" - is that what you mean? I have searched around and do not see anything like "Allow desktop config in launcher". I am looking at Controller > Controller Settings within the BPM settings. I sent you a friend request on Steam as well, my username there is Sensualettuce.

  14. I'm trying to set up a Steam controller for use with Launch Box and running into problems - I went into the settings but it doesn't appear under the controller types. After playing around with it for a bit it seems like the directional analog stick works but the face buttons don't do anything (but strangely in Big Box Mode the controller doesn't appear to work at all).

Any tips for getting this working? Unfortunately I don't have any 360 controllers to use any more, just two Steam controllers. Thanks in advance for any help!
