  1. In an attempt to add a default background to Nintendo Entertainment System games that didn't have their own fanart backgrounds, I figured out that I could add a file named LaunchBox\Images\Platforms\Nintendo Entertainment System\Fanart\Nintendo Entertainment System-01. This works, and now games with their own fanart have their own backgrounds, and games that do not, use the one I added.

Everything is great, except, before on the main menu, I would get a random fanart background when I would stop on Nintendo Entertainment System. I really liked that. Now, I get the default background that I added every time. I'm hoping there is something that I'm missing here. Is there a way to do what I'm trying to do? Thanks so much for any advice.

  2. Ok so I downgraded to 9.1 stable, and everything worked, so I tried reinstalling 9.3 again. Same problem - BigBox instantly crashed as soon soon as the platform view appeared. So, I tried to install 9.2, and the above error occurred again. So, I installed 9.1, and everything is working fine for now.

I'd appreciate any help in getting 9.3 working again though. I'd be happy to run tests or provide any information.

  3. I checked the other thread, I don't think this has anything to do with the other person's problem. As soon as BigBox loads and I can see the platform logos, BigBox crashes.

I haven't had any problems with previous versions of BigBox. I use symlinks for many things to save disk space, as I have multiple frontends, not sure if that is perhaps an issue.

    Please help me troubleshoot.

  4. Ok, I realized I was in fact on the latest stable version, and I just updated to the beta, and now it works properly. Thanks for your help, Jason must have caught it already. :)

  5. Is it me, or do the up and down buttons no longer work after pressing the 'Filter' button in BigBox? I seem to recall not having any issues on previous versions. I can still press left or right, but I can't move up or down to select  'developer,' 'genre,' etc.

Alright, a whole lot of development went into this one. 8.8-beta-1 is released with the following:

    - Improvement: All playlist features are now available for free users instead of only for premium users

    - New Feature: Platform Categories, Platforms, and Playlists now have fully flexible nesting. Anything can be placed inside of anything else and nested multiple-levels deep in the Platform Categories view.

Please bear in mind that due to the massive changes, this beta is a bit more involved, so backups are recommended. Extensive testing would be appreciated. :)

Most things are ready to go for the nesting flexibility, but I do still plan to overhaul the right-click menu in the Platform Categories list in the LaunchBox side bar. As of current, it's a bit difficult to add new categories, playlists, and platforms. Currently, you can find an existing category or platform, and right-click on it and select Add to create a new one.

Thought I'd give a little bit of feedback about the Platform Categories nesting - I don't like that a platform is 'forced' to exist somewhere. I have a 'Nintendo Power' platform, and I don't want that in 'Consoles,' 'Arcade,' 'Handhelds,' or 'Computers,' and I don't want it having it's own wheel right on the root, either. I also have a platform called 'Miscellaneous' that has tools and utilities and whatnot, I don't want that in Platform categories at all.

It's a great idea but users should be allowed to exclude anything they choose.

  7. I renamed my 'Cache' folder to 'Cache1,' and it booted right up. Lucky guess - I remembered Jason saying he was going to do something with the cache folder, and mine was gigantic (4+gb), and it seemed like a possibility.

Then after I got BigBox up and running again, I deleted the Cache-BB folder that was created, and renamed Cache1 to Cache-BB.

  8. I've been sitting here for almost 10 minutes, and it's stuck on 'Populating Playlists.' The only thing I can really thing of is, I use symlinks galore to save disk space, and I know that caused problems with instruction manuals in previous verisions. I'm wondering if that's an issue with this version of Launchbox - a lot of my media is symlinked.

But I'm not sure what to do, other than revert back to the previous version and hope it works.

  9. I just started using Launchbox Next, and I noticed a new folder was created, Launchbox\Images\Cache-Next.

My concern here is that my regular cache folder is gigantic, and it is my understanding that Big Box still uses that. Disk space is an issue for me. Are there supposed to be two cache folders, or does Big Box use the Cache-Next folder now, and I can go ahead and delete the old one?

  10. I noticed that in 8.3, the ability was added to choose a core after choosing 'Launch with...', and then RetroArch. My question is, how do you specify multiple cores?

For example, for the NES platform, sometimes I'll find a game that the 'mesen' core does not work with, and it would be ideal to use the 'FCEUMM' or even the 'NEStopia' core, but I can't figure out how to do this. I have Mesen as the default core, and it's the only option listed.

Any help would be most appreciated. :)

  11. There's a line somewhere, where repeatedly (and politely) asking for more begins to seem like taking advantage of the generosity of others. I have a friend that does that sort of thing often, and it seems manipulative and selfish.

But to each their own... I am also not the most patient person in the world.

    Thanks for the plugin Grila.

I have this crudely solved displaying a Windows Forms Message Box for testing. I'll have it implemented once I get it to display more elegantly within the actual plugin. Thanks for pointing that out, I only use it on the platform wheel view so it was never an issue for me.

It's possible but would take a major re-write on the menu logic tree. I'll add it to my long list because it does make sense to have it that way.

Honestly I prefer it the way it is. Unless @Jason Carr adds a dedicated button, it would cause problems for me. I use long presses of left and right inside of the platform, on the main menu, not so much. It  also frankly seems like kind of a waste of time for you to put that much effort into subtracting a layer from the menu, when the user still has to enter a platform (which requires an extra button press and a delay, anyways). The way it is, you can do everything you need to do right from the main menu, and it's quick, perhaps even quicker than what was suggested.

Perhaps it's not my place to say this, and I'm not trying to start anything here, but @MayorQwert I think you need to stop suggesting more work for @Grila. What he made is beautiful... if beautiful isn't good enough, you should make 'perfect' yourself. I know you mean well but your last post kinda rubbed me the wrong way. You keep politely asking for more stuff when this guy has clearly put a ton of work into this, and as a contributer (on other sites, not so much here), it doesn't reflect well from my point of view. A couple of suggestions is fine. Asking repeatedly for more tweaks while simultaneously saying 'thank you' doesn't really seem appreciative at all.

Again I know you mean well. But you are a fan and a beta tester, not a co contributor. If you were helping out with it I'd have nothing to say. The only person that should be putting this much thought into how to improve it is Grila in my opinion, if he is so inclined.

Apologies to Grila if I'm out of line.

  13. @CriticalCid I just noticed that a couple of the platform views have 'favorites' and 'recent' enabled, but there is no way to see them on screen. Specifically the 'full screen' one where the vertical wheel disappears, and the horizontal one.

You can press right for the full screen view and you can select a recent game, and you can press down on the horizontal one to do the same.

Do you know if there's some code I can add (or delete) from the xaml files to disable 'favorites' and 'recents' for those two views?

  14. The way I solved this on my end, as I've noticed this problem occurs on a number of Arcade based systems, such as Sega Naomi, is on the final step of the import process, selecting all of the text in the fields and pressing ctrl+C to copy, then pasting it to notepad++. Then I back up a few steps in the import process, and disable importing as arcade, and on the last step, you get just the ROM names. I then do the ctrl+C thing again, and paste it to a second window of Notepad++, then I use find+replace with regex/extended epxressions to be left with only the ROM names. Then I compare both (using the 'compare' plugin), and I'm able to determine which ROMs got skipped, then I can add them manually.

Yes, that is quite a hassle. But I want all of my games imported.

I really hope the way MAME games are imported is improved. You should not be losing games on import just because they're not in the database. I've enjoyed LaunchBox/BigBox so far, but some of the hurdles I've had to overcome importing games has been a huge time waster and letdown - with Commodore Amiga being the other notable PIA.

  15. I have both 'Trojan' and 'Trojan (PlayChoice-10)' in MAME, and 'Trojan (PlayChoice-10) is grabbing the media from 'Trojan' instead of it's own (I have a different clear logo for it with the PC-10 logo, etc.).

This happens a lot in MAME with LaunchBox. How do I go about fixing this? Honestly I think I should just be able to put '(PlayChoice-10)' in the title and that would be that, but LaunchBox does not respect parentheses when matching media.

    Thoughts?

  16. I wouldn't sweat it - next week, the one you haven't seen yet will show up 13 times in a row, even though that seems to defy the odds. :)

There's a man in here in the states that has been hit by lightning 12 times. The nature of 'random' is a wild thing. Somewhere, the seemingly impossible simply has to happen, because chance demands it.

  17. I think I've solved this. elements604 I made a post over on the Rlauncher forums (following yours), I've updated my 'fix' in such a way that it (seems to) only send a click AFTER the frontend profile is loaded (which is what we want), and it no longer interferes with HyperSpin.

Give it a try and let me know if that works for you.

Honestly I can't believe I got this working. It was total luck and guesswork every step of the way - I wasn't even sure if my 'if' statements were in the right format.
