I've been testing with both Default and CriticalZoneV2. But the theme doesn't matter because it's the BigBoxSettings file being edited. That said, I realized the error of my ways (you responded right as I made my second edit, if you want to read that edit)

Glad you found the edit, but themes can matter because a theme developer can choose what metadata is shown. One thing of note is if you try to edit Launchbox's default themes the edits will not stick. It is designed that way to ensure BigBox and Launchbox always have a working theme. You would have to copy the theme and rename it something else. Than any edits you do to it will stick.

This is a continuation from this thread:

I learned how to get custom fields to show up in big box: disable fields you dislike until they showed up. It seems there's a cut off for # of items that can show, so if you disable the higher priority items (eg Platform, Developer, Release Date, etc) then the lower priority items will show (eg Custom Fields). You can disable these fields in BigBoxSettings.xml found in the Data folder until the Custom Fields show up (set their variable to false, eg change to <ShowGamePlatform>false</ShowGamePlatform>).

The problem: There is no setting for star ratings in BigBoxSettings.xml. And that was the main thing I wanted removed. LaunchBox's settings file (Settings.xml found in the same folder) DOES have this setting (ShowDetailStarRating) which does remove star ratings from the right sidebar in LaunchBox (Yah!), but BigBoxSetting.xml does not have that setting (I tried adding the field just in case but it did nothing).

Does anyone know how to get Star Ratings to now show in BigBox? Or, @Jason Carr can we get that setting in BigBox like it is in LaunchBox's setting?

    EDIT:

There IS a "remove star ratings" option in Big Box, but I cannot figure out what the XML variable for it is. Can anyone help?

    What theme are you using?

Yes that is in there. These were working once, so something happened at one point that made them stop. I've removed all the zips and re-added to see if that worked and nothing. I'm going to test run these thru MAME only tonight to rule out Launchbox.

We always recommend when adding new systems and when something stops working. Test directly in the emulator first. This way, as was mentioned, we rule out the emulator. As long as it works in the emulator we can have an easier time of troubleshooting Launchbox.

  4. You create the manual playlist then you go to the games you want and right click then select "add to playlist". You can also change your Launchbox view to All Game and then bulk select as many games as you want and then right click and add to playlist.

So basically, If I want to create custom genres with this, I have to create for each one a single playlist with a unique name as instance a unique name like Action or RPG?. And what exactly does Auto-Populate do in this case? Sorry for so many stupid questions...

    Correct.

Auto-populate does just that. In the Auto-Populate tab you choose the criteria you want to set it to. Then anytime you add or remove games it will get added or deleted from the playlist without you doing anything.

Say you want only an Arcade Shoot 'em up genre. You set auto to Platform="Arcade" and Genre="Shoot 'Em Up" and it pulls only games in the Arcade platform with genre listed as Shoot em up.

Thats a good idea, I will have to check when I get home later.  I'll report back. With these midway games I know they require the missio.zip or whatever its called to run, anyone know what a good site is to use for reference to see what roms need these particular zip files to run? maybe I've delete something I wasnt supposed to. Its just weird that only these games stopped working.

Those games need the Midway Sound file midssio.zip. Make sure you did not delete that.

Thanks Retro, but I never really understood what a playlist is supposed to be on launchbox honestly. Is every playlist I create unique to the corresponding platform?

A playlist on Launchbox is like a playlist on anything else you may use. The playlist can be unique to whatever you want it to be. It is your choice. You can have it auto-populate games or set it to manual where it only updates when you say "add this game to this specific playlist".

You can call a playlist whatever you want, have it show up under any Category, Platform, or show up on its own as a main category if you so choose.

You can see in the image I set this specific playlists up to only show up under the Category of Playlist. If I wanted I can have a playlist show up under a platform just by changing the tick boxes in the parents tab.

  8. You can make pretty much any kind of playlist under a platform. When you create a new platform under the Parents tab you can choose what you want it to show up under. Same for an existing playlist. Just right click the playlist name, edit and look in the Parents tab as well.

thnx neil, i know this and somehow it doesnt suffice, and the main problem is it doesnt block BigBOX long enough (until the game is fully loaded) so i guess I will have to resort to some ahk script which might do the trick although i doubt.

What would be nice to have is also ahk module for each game, not only for emulator

You can set an AHK per game if you need. Right click a game and edit then in the Additional Apps tab you can set an AHK to launch before, after or both if you need.

Thanks for that but not all ROMs are working with that version flashes then back to LB only a handful ran. And yes got all bios files in system.

If some roms work all should work. That is if it is a working game per Mame.  Are your roms ones you pieced together from sites or did you download a complete romset? If it is a set do you know which version?

Ok now some ROMs are working others if run through Mame itself give me error with system message. I am using regular MAMEx64 emu.

If you are talking about errors like the image below that is just the nag screen to let you know emulation is not perfect. If it gives a pop-up an error like certain files are missing that is a bit different. You can find version of Mame someone compiled called NoNag that removes that or you can learn to compile you own.

I forgot NJDave posts a NoNag version here

sorry in advanced if this has been covered. So I had installed Both the cps1  and cps2 roms in launchbox. I added the cps1/2 emulators from the tutorial here and made a cps1/2 categories. Yesterday I decided to add the complete mame rom set. Agter the install is made categories for Capcom Play System 1/2. Can I simply delete the first cps1/2 categories amd roms without it affecting the mame rom set games. The mame roms and the original cps1/2 games are in different directories.

Yes. Deleting the first ones will not affect the Mame install.

  13. 7 minutes ago, TechXero said:

Nope. I dragged n dropped a rom zip onto Mame it just flashes for a sec n nothing...

Not how it is going to work properly. What Mame are you using? regular Mame, MameUI or Arcade64?

Which ever version it is you need to open up the user interface and find the option to set a directory path. Then tell Mame the folder path to your Mame roms. Once set you should be able to open Mame click a working game and have it load. Once you confirm it is working directly in Mame than test in Launchbox.

Ok I closed RA and reloaded it a few times now it says present with a couple still missing like sk n other ones not needed... In process of re-adding Sega ROMs. What about MAME Standalone Emulator why isn't it working ? Does nothing as for RA mame 2016 libretro core it works fine...

In mame directly (not using Launchbox) do the games play?

Thank you for the replies so far. The Netflix analogy makes sense. So in essence, since he wants to play old games like donkey Kong from the 80s I’ll have them figure out retro ark first and then use launch box as the organizer.

Stand alone Mame would probably be easier than using RA for arcade games like Donkey Kong and such. Not that there is anything wrong with using Retroarch.

But yes, first figure out Retroarch or even Mame if you choose that route. Get it set up, running, and make sure game work and controls. Then tackle the Launchbox piece.

I can't load MAME or Sega CD (ISO Images) either in RA or Standalone Emu I am pulling my hair

Your Arcade (mame) issue is you do not have a core chosen. Like the other platforms listed you need to tell it what core to use for your Arcade platform. Sega CD make sure you have the bios files as was mentioned.
