  1. @moff

I appreciate your comments.  Thank you.

I did not select the regions/clones for the rom list.  I just checked my Launchbox and didn't even know that 1941u was the main rom selected for 1941.  When I right click  on '1941', all the clones are listed under the same heading.  I think that was due to how Launchbox bundled the roms when I imported them.

I do agree that some versions of certain games are better than others, although, I didn't choose which clone should be on those lists.  Honestly, that would've been too tedious for me.

But, I'm also the kind of guy who likes X-Men to be the 6-player version with 3 screens and would take the time to set up my controller to the character that I like. :D

  2. I am currently working on more 'game' specific overlays/bezels.  I would like them to be in a corresponding forum category. But, currently there is only a 'platform' category for bezels.  I've already posted my NES black box games bezels there.

Any chance we can have a game specific category for them?  And once you have that, can you move my post there?  Also, @nadonate has a few game specific bezels that could go there, too.

  3. So, has anyone had any trouble playing the light gun games on Retroarch?  They were crashing on me any time I pointed the mouse off screen.

I found a solution, but it's a not-so-great one.  In order to play those games, you must disconnect (or shut off) your controller before you open Retroarch.  I'm using a wireless X Box 360 controller and it was shut off when I discovered this.  Now, I can point and click at those ducks without getting an error message.  Yay!

  4. First, select the game.

Then under 'Settings' find 'Onscreen Display' and select that. Then pick 'Overlay Preset' and you can choose the config file for the bezel of your choice.

Then under Quick Menu find 'Save Game Overrides' and click.  The game should open with the chosen bezel every time.

Thanks Nyny77.  I admire your work.  Great to hear from you.

  5. NES Black Box Games Bezels and Configs for Retroarch

    View File

Here are the NES Black Box bezels I created for Retroarch. There are three sets for 3 different configurations:  NoTV, TV, and ThickTV.

Download and unzip to your RetroArch\overlays folder.  Set them up through Retroarch.

You can also download the playlist and playlist clear logo here:

Also, @CTRL-ALT-DEFEAT generously made an awesome theme video to go along with the playlist and bezels.  Download it here:

Yeah and Dust a Elysian Tale is like that as well metroidvania beatemup, but with proper long combo's like 300 hit combo's lol, it also has crafting and quests, and is awesome. Oh and it looks absolutely gorgeous.

I own this game as well. Played it a bit.  I do like the cartoony graphics.  Got it with a bunch of games in a Humblebundle deal.

  8. I've been playing a translated version of 'Front Mission: Gunhazard' for Super Famicom.  It's a rather unique game, I'd say.  It's a Role Playing/Run N Gun side-scroller.  Much different than the strategy games that the series is known for.  It kind of reminds me of 'Cybernator'.

Continuing on with my "indie games I haven't played yet" I'm currently enjoying Fez. Is it just me, or do we all prefer shorter games the older we get? :)

@Charco, have you ever tried 'Guacamelee'?  I loved Shovel Knight for it's homages, too.  Guacamelee has tons of homages, especially in the backgrounds.  If I had to describe the kind of game it is, it's a Metroidvania/Beat Em Up.  I had a lot of fun with that game.

...I had no idea there was a Metal Slug 7. All this time I thought Metal Slug 6 was the last game in the series. :S

    Excellent playlist!

I own this DS game, complete with box and it even comes with a mini promo disc and a shiny slip cover.  The clouds parted and the angels started singing when I picked it up from the shelf. :D

Did you know there was Contra 4 on the DS, too?  Gotta get two copies so you can play with a friend.

Yeah, it's crazy but I admire the guy. I don't have the skill or the stamina to even think about attempting something like that. He was at 90 million+ and 18+ hours in a few minutes ago. That's incredible. I played the game a lot yesterday and I suck and it's a tough game to boot. I won't embarrass myself by telling you all my high score, haha.

@MetalVinnie I tried out the Gyruss hack yesterday. I didn't play long but from what I could tell it was how you explained it, English intro. Might have slightly better audio as well. The cool thing for me was I learned a bit about patching ROMs with hacks in the process. :)

I watched him for a bit.  I was more curious to see what he did to take a break.  He had so many extra lives that it almost didn't matter if he lost a few.  But he took a break to sip his cup, lost a few lives doing it.  And every time he reached 10 million, the score rolls over to 0.  So he had to mark that on the video for us and that took a bit of time from him, too.  Having no pause button is what really blew me away.

I also just learned how to patch roms.  It was easy enough to just download an already patched rom, so I never bothered until now.  I was curious about Gyruss because Brad announced it on one of his videos.  I guess the Gyruss translation is still too new for an already patched rom to download.  So I learned how to do it myself.  But I also found some patches for other games that I thought needed a translation and spent a day patching roms.  It's pretty easy.  I was really happy to find a translation for 'Arumana no Kiseki' or 'The Miracle Of Almana'.  Haven't gotten far with it, but it's good ol' Konami greatness with a Castlevania/Indiana Jones kind of feel to it.

While we're here sharing our learning experiences, I did want to tell you something else I discovered about EBOOT.PCB files in Retroarch.  While I was making configurations on Retroarch for one of my eboot files, I noticed that Retoarch will save it to a file as 'EBOOT.cfg'.  Unfortunately, any 'EBOOT.PCB' will save to the same config.  So...I renamed all my EBOOT.PCB files to 'Name of Game'.PCB.  They still work and now I can save each game to it's own config. For some reason I thought they all had to be named 'eboot.pcb' because that's how they will work on my actual PSP.

  11. I think the only difference is that the Famicom Disk version has a text intro and a select screen that was missing in the NA cart.  Not sure, but maybe the music sounds a bit different.  I have to try it myself.

100 Million?  Nuts!  I think he's at 59,000,000 at this time of writing.  Almost 12 hours in...what if he has to pee?

  12. Minor update for 1.5.1

Added a few more obscure NES titles. They are unlicensed/homebrew games.  I included Gyruss for Famicom Disk because it recently got a fan translation and is supposedly better than the NES cart version.

  13. Clear Logo Booster Pack

    View File

Here is an assortment of game clear logos that were missing in the database and/or I couldn't find anywhere else.  I made so many of them, I'm starting to lose track of which ones I did.  But here's a whole bunch of them.  Check out the screenshots.  See anything you need?  They're all in one zip file.  The zip file contains sub-folders for each platform.

Most of these logos were made to help complete the SHMUPS, Beat 'em ups, and Run N Gun playlists that I posted here:

  14. Update 1.5 is up.

New playlists for Dreamcast, PS2 and PSP.

Been playing around with some emulators for these.

Demul works best for the Dreamcast games.  I haven't been able to fully run any games on the Riecast core in Retroarch, but I am using a Windows PC.  I heard Riecast was made to work on smart devices.

I'm using PCSX2 1.4.0 for the PS2 games, and it works okay mostly.  Having a few graphic glitches on a few games.

The PPSSPP core on Retroarch works on most of the games, but it is outdated.  I decided to use the latest standalone PPSSPP emulator and I'm having no problems with it.  It looks great on fullscreen.

Also, the NES Shmup library got a pretty big update.  I couldn't believe I missed some of those.  One game that really stands out is  'Uchuu Keibitai SDF' made by Hal Laboratory.  It looks and feels like a really good Konami shmup.  Check it out. :)

  15. Lots of new games added in the 1.4 update.

Got my Saturn (Retroarch) emulator running pretty decent.  Still having some lag issues.  Too bad there are no save states on it though.  (awww, This will force me to actually play the games like they were supposed to, LOL!)

So, I added a Shmups playlist for Saturn.  Galactic Attack is pretty cool, but I discovered that it also has 3 other names; 'Layer Section' on the Japanese Saturn, and also 'Rayforce' and 'Gunlock' in the arcade. 'Layer Section II' did not get a release outside of Japan.  But it is also known as 'Raystorm' on PS1 and in the arcades.

So I added 'Ray Force' (note that it is with a 'space' to match the LB database and MAME) in the arcade playlist because it is part of a trilogy: Rayforce, Raystorm and Raycrisis.  But I didn't want to remove Gunlock from the arcade playlist because it is easier to get the media for it.  I grabbed the proper media for 'Rayforce' from the EmuMovies FTP.  Sorry for the *double*, but I thought it might make sense to see that it was part of a trilogy.

I've been working on these playlists as I've been adding emulators and roms to my launchbox.  It looks like I got most of the popular and easy-to-install emulators.  But it's been getting harder as I progress.  I tried emulating Saturn months ago, but I passed on it because I didn't figure it out.  Now I have it running pretty clean, but it took a long time to figure out which roms to find and how to get them to work. 'Darkwater' and 'ReDump' are always a safe bet for bin/cue files.  But .ccd files also work on RetroArch as another resort.

N64, Gamecube, and Wii don't have many shmups at all.  I may group those together in a miscellaneous list in the future.

PS2 emulation isn't too much of a problem for me, I'll be working on a SHMUPS list for that.  The only thing slowing me down is the iso file sizes.  I haven't attempted Dreamcast yet.  But, it doesn't seem like too much of a hassle.

Last night, I started with Sharp X68000 and what a friggin' nightmare!  Getting the roms to work on Launchbox is a HUGE hassle, and I don't really like the setting choices on the emulator (I like scanlines...no option there, and analog stick only?).  BUT, there are a TON of shmups for it (I counted about 90 so far).  I'll eventually have a cool playlist for it, but in this case I have to add each game to my Launchbox   one...... at...... a...... time.

Anyways, have fun with those playlists.  At this point I think I've scraped the bottom of the barrel for those systems.  Enjoy!

I had no clue, either. I installed ePSXe to play the EBOOTS because I figured it was a good alternative if I couldn't find good bin/cue's for Retroarch.  I loaded the games on Launchbox and forgot to set up the ePSXe emulator on one of the games ,behold, the game was playing on Retroarch with all my nice settings.  I thought it wasn't possible,  I was reading through other sites and they mostly mention that it doesn't work.  I'm still scratching my head.

So yeah, this opens a very big door, doesn't it? :)
