  1. Fixing the Database: #1 Dedicated Help: The database is crucial to the Launchbox experience, but it seems to always go to the wayside in favor of flashier features. It's even somehow still in "Alpha". So why not let Jason handle Launchbox development, and have designated volunteer(s) or a paid staff member handle the database? #2 Protect Correct Data: Values in the database should have an "Is this is correct?" option next to them that is only visible to moderators. Selecting "Yes" on this option + games that haven't been changed in years would go into the current DB change approval queue with a poll for mods asking: "Is this correct?". Once there are a very significant number of "yes" votes, the data would no longer be open for requests to change it. Moderators would also have the option to flag previously marked "correct" data as invalid. Records should be kept on which games are constantly being changed so that they can be fixed 1 time, marked as correct, and everyone moves on. We should narrow our focus on completing a correct database, rather than wasting moderator time on junk requests for popular games. #3 Protect "complete" Platforms: Changes to "complete" platforms (for example: NES, SNES) should require much more votes than normal to pass. This would lead to less junk for moderators to sort through and fewer duplicates. Currently a request can be made about any game or value. No one wants to moderate when the next several changes are just someone adding Mario, Zelda, etc to the NES. #4 Moderator Ranks: Moderator ranks could be a continuing incentive and could serve many different functions. The Lowest tier would just be the same as the current moderator. Medium tier would be unlocked at x20 the current DB moderator requirement. This would give double the voting power on any changes, and requested changes would say "Submitted by a veteran moderator". Top tier moderators would have all previously mentioned perks, but would only be selected by Launchbox staff. Their votes would count significantly more than a regular vote. They would also have the option to suggest a timeout or ban on users. Both medium tier and top tier moderators would have access to an exclusive forum section to discuss the database & suggest database changes/features. Finally, anyone who has submitted a very significant amount of work to a certain platform should get a badge/tag marking them as a "Platform Expert". #5 Fix Platform Names/Organization: Platform names should be consistent. Either make all Platforms have their company as a prefix or none of them. For example, all other consoles made by NEC have "NEC" in front, so "PC Engine SuperGrafx" should be changed to "NEC PC Engine SuperGrafx". Platforms should also be grouped together by their company. Please add a "Database Revamp" option in the next poll so the community can decide on this. @Jason Carr @Lordmonkus @neil9000 @Zombeaver @DOS76 @RetroHumanoid @Charco @Retro808 @keltoigael @kmoney
  2. I want to add Steam tags and genres to https://gamesdb.launchbox-app.com/genres Does someone know how? If this already been answered, just link me to the answer.
  3. I wanted to create an auto-generated playlist for vector games. Is there a field for whatever this would be called ("screen"? "monitor"? "graphics type"?) so that I could filter by that?
  4. I believe for the future integrity of the database and continued success of Launchbox these basic database features are necessary and should be considered. Please add a "heavy DB revamp" option in the next poll, and link to this post so the community can decide on it. Thanks. #1 Dedicated help. Jason has talked before about having another developer in the future. This new dev position should be someone working full-time on the database. At the very least, have someone part-time or a volunteer who is fully knowledged in the database working on features/fixes. The database is crucial to the Launchbox experience, but goes pretty much goes to the wayside when Jason goes back to working on features. It's a constant balance for Jason between Launchbox features, and database features. Jason seems to enjoy developing the app more, so the next paid position should be someone working on the database. If you can't pay someone, or can't justify paying someone, get a dedicated volunteer, vet them, and put them to work. Requests like this list could be directed to this person and implemented, instead of competing against more flashy features for the program. Launchbox has been in development for years now, yet the very service that makes it all work is still in "Alpha". That's just crazy. We absolutely need an official (ACTIVE) person overseeing it. #2 Protect correct Database data. Existing data values could be given a "this is correct" option that could be voted on by moderators. Once data hits a certain threshold of "correct" votes, it would become protected so that future changes could not be requested for this data. Data that hasn't been changed in years should also be marked as "correct". Moderators would have the option to flag "correct" data as invalid. Records should be kept on which games are constantly being changed so that it can be fixed 1 time with the correct values, and stop the users that keep modifying it. We should narrow the focus on completing a correct database, rather than moderators seeing absurd junk requests for popular games. #3 Protect "complete" Platforms from duplicate/invalid games. New games for "complete" platforms, for example NES, should require a lot more votes than normal to add since by this point it's probably a user error in not finding that the game already exists. This would lead to less junk for moderators to sort through and fewer duplicates. Currently a request can made about any game or value. No one wants to moderate when the next 50 changes are someone adding Mario, Zelda, ect to the NES. #4 Tiered levels of database moderators. Tiered moderator ranks could be a continuing incentive to moderate, and serve different functions. The lowest tier would just be the same as the current "moderator". Medium tier moderator would be unlocked at x10 the current DB moderator requirement. This would give double the voting power on any changes, and requested changes would say "Submitted by a veteran moderator". Finally, Top tier moderators would have all previously mentioned perks, but would only be selected by Launchbox staff. They would be able to flag "correct" values (as mentioned above), as invalid with only 3 votes required from top tier moderators before it is accepted as invalid. They could also see which user submitted the changes, and have the option to submit a request to ban the user from suggesting changes. Finally, both medium tier and top tier moderators would have access to an exclusive forum section to congregate and also to suggest database changes/features to Launchbox Staff. #5 FIX NAMES Platform names should be consistent. Either make all Platforms have its company as a prefix, or none of them. For example, all other consoles made by NEC have "NEC" in front, so "PC Engine SuperGrafx" should be changed to "NEC PC Engine SuperGrafx". #6 Community Events. I think everyone can agree that at the very least, fan-art submitted should be relevant to the game or sequels to the game on the same console. However this is currently a moderation nightmare, and is heavily influenced by personal bias since no fan-art is "correct". The real question we should ask ourselves is what benefits does fan-art add, and is it worth it compared to an optional fan-art internet scrape upon import? Some fanart from the entire series can be fine, but this could potentially spoil later sequels or even events in the current game (dead characters, betrayals, ect). I don't know how this slipped through the cracks, but personally on my setup any game that has "taz" in it displays fan-art of the Tasmanian devil character for me. Basically, either require fan-art to be specific to the game/sequence of games, or remove it. My solution is that I think we could do without fan-art. *EDIT: I don't mean reconstructions, those should definitely stay* It has no real quality standards so it leaves many high-quality fan-art submissions next to DeviantArt MS-paint fanart. It has no real moderation standards so it bogs down moderation. Seeing as there is no real limit on how much fan-art is "enough", it will constantly take up an ever-increasing amount of database space, increasing import times, but adding little to the experience or even degrading it at times (Tasmanian devil / spoilers). I'm sure many would be mad at the "loss of a feature" but an alternative could be that fan-art would optionally be scraped from the web as an import option. @Jason Carr @Lordmonkus @neil9000 @Zombeaver @DOS76
  5. An example of an incorrect name is "Daphne". Daphne is an emulator for Arcade LaserDisc games, not the name of the platform or machine. It should be re-named to "LaserDisc". An overarching problem is whether or not the company name should be included or not. All Nintendo and Sega consoles have the company names in the front, however many "NEC" consoles don't. There should be a standard of either having the company name, or not having the company name. @Jason Carr @Lordmonkus
  6. There are some duplicate platforms in the database: - XaviXPORT - Mattel HyperScan - Taito Type X
  7. Hello everyone, I'm very happy with my premium license! and I want to contribute every possible thing in my hands for the community and the app, pdta: sorry if my english is not appropriate, this is the situation: Have you think: Why something games does not download artwork and why do not merged automatically ? that's the answer: I've noticed that all the games (generally Japanese versions) in the database with an alternative names but without its corresponding region , have issues with auto download Metadata & Media and especially with the merge function as well. For example In my Snes roms I've one called "Takahashi Meijin no Daibōken Jima II" that is the japanese version of "Super Adventure Island 2" but the Japanese version was not auto included/merged into "Super Adventure Island 2" apps, for a simply reason, the alternative name does not have the region, It does not been specified in the database. as in the image: It easy to report it, I've reported all the Snes & Nintendo 64 alternative names without region, I like to help improving the games database, for this reason, for a better database please do not upload alternative names without his region, If you are a moderator of the database please take in to account that the alternatives names with his region helps to improve the merging in and download Artwork for the collections. If you see an alternative name without region please change it!! is simple, you must delete the previous alternative name by pressing backspace, and create a new entry with the alternative name and his corresponding region, like in the images: That's all!! This must seem very exaggerated hehe, but can you imagine the lot of games without his media & not merged/linked in his parent game, it's like a game without his parents and his home heheh, just for this simply reason, It must be mandatory add the region in every alternative name, this will improve the database and our collections a lot!! Thanks for reading!! have a nice game!
  8. I'm trying to use ExoDos and nothing works!!! I used Dosbox as a emulator and imported the roms folder but no games where imported.
  9. Hi All, I enjoy helping the Launchbox community by moderating the Database, Approving and Declining peoples updates. Recently though I have got very frustrated with how slow it is to do this. Clicking on the approve or Decline button seems to takes ages to move on to the next game. Timing it just now, it took 26 seconds to do a simple approval on a new image. There is currently a moderation queue of 1067 items and I have noticed this getting longer and longer, it use to be only a couple of hundred. So I assume I am not the only one losing patients with database. Due to various issues I have not been able to help out for the last couple of months, in that time I was hoping this would improve but it has not. Is there anything that can be done to improve this in the background? I know how big this database is and this is not an easy ask, but I fear you will start losing moderators if things do not improve soon. As is evident from the current backlog this already appears to be the case. For the record, I take pride in making sure I am checking for duplicates and that names/pics are correct, I am not simply spamming the Approve button to get the queue down.. I want the Launchbox database to be solid, reliable and accurate. Thanks
  10. Hey guys, figure this place is as good as any to ask about this, hopefully I'm not just uselessly cluttering up the forum. I know it's not technically "troubleshooting", since there's nothing I can really do on my end to fix it, but is there any specific reason ratings are so universally low for Arcade roms? Nearly every game, including some very classic staples, are around .5 to 2 star rated with enough votes to have evened out to a higher average. Are people spamming the ratings system with low scores intentionally, or is something else going on?
  11. Hello, i've noticed that i can implement a star rating on my themes, but then i download metadata, it doesn't download the star rating and i have to manually add them on the games. But on my profile from Launchbox Database the information is there. Is there a way do sync the ratings from the LB database to my games? Thanks a lot.
  12. it would be great if we could delete our own change/update requests on the Database. I just accidently uploaded the same image twice, but I cant do a thing about it. all I can do is hope people are smart and pick the first one to be approved and the second one to be rejected. -update- also I just realized I posted this in the wrong section. please move to the proper section. thx!
  13. So I really want the MAME Database to be updated, and want to help the only way I know how to at the moment. So I went looking for some freely available info that I hope can help. 14. Hello all! So, I am having issues bulk editing Nintendo Game Boy Advance.xml in "user\LaunchBox\Data\Platforms". The issue that I'm having is that many (not all of them, about 60%) of my roms are labeled with "# GBA" at the end of the file name. This is incredibly annoying as it makes it impossible for the scraper to go through and identify each of these files with the corresponding game db entry. I also would prefer to not have to manually go through and re-tag some x-100 files. To work around this I simply attempted to do a replace all searching for " # GBA </Title>" with "</Title>. Upon saving the XML file and booting up launchbox it would appear that all of my changes have been reverted, and re-examing the xml file shows that all <Ttle></Title> Entries have been changed back to reflect their original names with the stupid # GBA in them. What am I missing my dudes?
  15. Hello and thank you so much for creating BigBox! I can't play retro games without it anymore Something strange happened to me yesterday on the LaunchBox Games DB site. Almost all of my uploads are gone from my Changes Status site. In the last weeks I created a lot of fanart backgrounds for games without a single background or games with backgrounds I didn't like, and a couple of North American box fanart for games only released in Japan. I had 26 pages on my Changes Status site, and now only one with the stuff I uploaded today and yesterday. I also notice that the Moderation Queue Length was reduced from over 1000 to almost zero (80 yesterday, 160 today). Is all the stuff gone? What happened to it?
  16. The games database is a fantastic thing to have, but given the nature of Launchbox and how easy it is to get it to launch a player and watch any movie, would a movie database be possible? Or maybe a connection to The Open Movie Database API? Seems a bit silly, since Launchbox is mainly a game-focused launcher, but I want to know if there's any chance of putting movies into the mix. ...Or books...
  17. I've been going through the SNES DB and making contributions where I can and fixing things I am 110% sure on while building my collection. However I added an alternative name for the SNES game Smart Ball. After submitting it I realized the name was not correct and not knowing how to retract the submission I put in another one saying that that submission and the previous one should be rejected... And now they both have +2 for approval lol. Maybe if there already isn't, add a retract submission option in the change status page for your account, before they are implemented. Peace.
  18. Whenever I launch any game in Launchbox, all Crash Bandicoot games, I get sent immediately to a black screen with no sound. I've followed the tutorials on youtube from the Launchbox channel and another tutorial which was the second video when i searched 'retroarch ps1 blackscreen'. I've followed every step and have the bios in correctly I made cue files from the iso for each game and haven't had any luck. I will be happy to provide screenshots of anything requested and any help would be graciously appreciated since I told myself at 3pm EST " I'll just set up the PS1 emulator and then go shower", thinking it would be as easy as Dolphin, I still haven't showered.
  19. work in progress arcade ..around 500 cabinets so far as well as an atari, genesis, nes, snes, rooms. Includes a windows/pc room , a music room w jukebox , a sports room and a wrestling room . a movie hallway with all movie themed games and started a driving game room . all cabinets have walkup video previews and all games playable.still long way to go .Much credit to the launchbox database community.
  20. Hi all, I have a very large Commodore 64 collection (22,541 programs, over 2 GBs in .t64). Very few of the games are actually in the database. Note: Some have been cracked because often the manuals and cardboard that came with the games have all been destroyed or are sitting in a landfill. Since this is about the basic metadata and not the legality of the games, I hope it's okay to ask for help. My situation is that I have a very large folder where all the games are in separate subfolders with a .NFO file that has a large amount of pertinent metadata. I'd like to know if there is a way to parse the .nfo files automatically to convert that metadata to the games database with the game file in the folder. For example: Cavelon1.t64 is in a folder named Cavelon. A file in the folder named VERSION.NFO has this information: ============================================================================== GB-Version: 1 Filename: c1\CAVELON1_01337_01.zip Screenshot: C\Cavelon.gif Sid: GAMES\A-F\Cavelon.sid ============================================================================== ============================================================================== GAME INFO: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Unique-ID: 1337 Name: Cavelon Published: 1984 Ocean Programmer: John Hutchinson Musician: (Unknown) Language: English Genre: Arcade - Miscellaneous Players: 1 - 2 Control: Joystick Port 2 Comment: ============================================================================== ============================================================================== VERSION INFO: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cracked/Crunched: Desperado (ASS) Game Length: 46 Blocks Trainers: 1 High Score Saver: No Loading Screen: No Included Docs: No True Drive Emul.: No Pal/NTSC: PAL(+NTSC?) 22. Hi there, I have imported some roms in launchbox and after I was finished, I realized that I have quite a few duplicates. Creating an AdditionalApplication entry from the gui is possible but it might take some time. So I just created a duplicate identifier that automatically creates the xml tags for your platform xml and lists all the files that can be removed (manually) and puts that into a results folder. In theory, you can copy the additional apllication tags into your system.xml and you can remove the files that are listed as duplicates now. No guarantee it won't mess something up so please backup your platforms directory before you start modifying your xmls. YOU, YOURSELF. My program does not modify your files, it just lists and makes a guess what you want and puts all that into text files for each system I think I'll eventually make it more sophisticated and add trying to find wrong database entries. if you call it with no parameters, the program assumes you have your xmls in K:\LaunchBox\Data\Platforms\ and this is your priority preference: prioList = append(prioList, "North America") prioList = append(prioList, "World") prioList = append(prioList, "Europe") prioList = append(prioList, "Germany") prioList = append(prioList, "Japan") but you can also call it with cli parameters: first parameter is the filepath with backslash, then you can add parameters with region preferences I included the executable and the source code. Have fun :-D http://www.filedropper.com/launchboxcleaner Also: it's the first version that creates usable results stored in files for all databases in your system with priority and cli parameters. Expect to see some bugs. I just found one myself: some result files are exactly 4096 bytes and also incomplete...
  23. When I read around on this forum I have the impression that there's a big majority here that uses Launchbox as a ROM launcher. I on the other hand am hoping it can replace Collectorz Game Collector as my games database front end. A while ago I sent a feature request to Collectorz asking for a possibility to add local videos (instead of just a youtube player) to the games "details" page. The answer I got was pretty off-putting: "nobody wants that, and they're focusing on "the cloud". Since I dislike everything DRM (I can't view a video from within my database if I'm offline or the youtube video is removed), LB seems like a possible perfect replacement! So I'd like a way to import my Collectorz database (txt, xml, csv). I'm sure I'm not the only one that has made the move to LB from some other database (program)? I have 2 collections in Collectorz: my boxed PC games and my GOG collection. I made a crude conversion of my GOG database by scanning the installation exe files in my GOG folder, but transferring all my manual additions would be a giant undertaking... So I'm not only asking for a simple import, but also to import data in an existing LB database (e.g. replace the LB descriptions with the descriptions from a csv file). I've seen this request (or something like it) on this forum somewhere, but it was an old topic. Is this really a low priority? Are "database converts" such a small minority that the LB developer doesn't want to invest time in it? And something else: how about adding the front cover to the details pane? (especially for when viewing in list mode). And the Box - Front reconstructed should be view-able as a replacement for Box - Front for all those digital-only releases!
  24. The database have a bug, and a bunch of partially deleted entries. When you find a entry without any image or developer/publisher data is a partially deleted one. Please don't send again to moderation to delete it, or add data. Is a waste of time. Jason is working to manage the issue.
  25. How would I go about fixing a game on the database that has had it's name changed and been heavily altered with an update? For example, Evolve. Evolve is correct for all the various platforms and covert art however when importing the new updated version "Evolve Stage 2" there is no information. Should Evolve Stage 2 be put into the database as a separate game with a different release date and artwork? A feature to add multiple game names for one title would help (sorry if I'm just not seeing this feature). Just for the sake of example SimCity4 and SimCity4 "Deluxe" has this problem as well.
