Streets of Rage Remake is, to me at least, the gold standard of fangames, and well worth checking out:

Cannonball is not "technically" a fangame, but it's a reverse-engineered, ported, and vastly upgraded version of OutRun:

Super Mario Bros. X was basically Mario Maker before Mario Maker was a thing:

Power Bomberman is...ridiculous. It's up to 12 player Bomberman, and just an absurd amount of content:

DoomRL takes the crazy idea of mixing DOOM with a RogueLike to it's beautiful conclusion:

Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch is...exactly what it sounds like. Take a look:

If you're looking for a more traditional Mega Man game, I've got you covered with Mega Man Unlimited:

What's that? You like a different blue action hero? Alright, well here's Sonic After the Sequel to blow your mind: (Sonic Before the Sequel is also worth checking out)

Those are the big ones that come to mind. I'm sure I'm missing a few, but such is life.

I'd say Bunny Must Die is obscure but apparently (had no idea) it's on steam now. Its a pretty neat Metroidvania.

This is my fav thread. I love finding new stuff to play. Added this to my wishlist. looks like a 90s crazy japanese platformer, which is totally my style.

Well you're in luck because I remembered another one MegaMari – Marisa no Yabou. Blatant Mega Man clone for sure but you can easily find it with google. English patch available too I believe.

Edit... I think you need a 3rd party app to use a controller on this one.

Got a few more. Though these arent all free... and some of these wont seem obscure to many, but for those who don't keep up with the indie scene, they will be pleasant surprises. These are all games you can play with a controller.

@dmjohn0x  Yeah,   Stardew Valley sucked me in for a hundred hours or so .   I'd recommend "Hero's Never Lose"  http://store.steampowered.com/app/342530   it's a retro inspired dr.Mario,Tetris with slightly altered rules.    It's made by a Canadian guy part time, but love the retro feel and even has some good 8 bit streetfighter esque look to it.   My wife and I have fun playing it on occasion :)

Did you use a controller or keyboard? It worked fine on my controller after I set it up as the input device.

yeah, i was able to select my gamecube controller from the list, and map everything.  I tried mapping walk to d-pad left right, analog left right, and nothing. No matter what i map the walk to none of the options (2tap2run,hold2run, etc.) work.  It's always on walk.

Walk is a button you have to hold while pressing a direction. I imagine you cant set walk to a directional button. I think I had mine on R2 on my wii u pro controller and pressed/held it while moving. Try adding "walk" to a different button.

No idea, I just downloaded/tried it to answer your question lol. I'm sure you could look at a faq for your smash game of choice on gamefaqs. They usually have controls listed at the top. I haven't really played smash since the n64 days tbh. Double taps to run usually feels right to me in fighters.
