I personally use HIgan retroarch core for snes its more accurate but needs a beefier CPU than snes9x does, i also use Redream standalone for all the Dreamcast games it currently supports, and only use DEMUL for the games Redream doesnt support (which is the WinCE games mostly).

Rest of that list is the same as mine though.

I've built a 2-player arcade cabinet based on an older Dell Optiplex 7010 with an i7 3770 and added 1050Ti. I've never had an issue with snes9x and just haven't found the need to change to Higan... maybe I will.

To be honest I only chose Demul because I kept seeing it mentioned everywhere but I'm always looking to compare options. I've been looking in to a Retroarch dreamcast core vs standalones, so I'll take a look at Redream and see what it offers :)

I have almost the same setup you have and redream seems to cause a lot of video signal dropouts for me, and that's with the paid version. I switched to demul and it's given me zero issues. So let me know how redream works for you!

Hi guys, I'm wondering where we are now in term of the dreamcast emulation fight?

Between reicast libretro, DEmul and Redream, I can't decide.

Anyone of you made some tests and came to a conclusion to this question?

I use Redream standalone for everything that it supports, and i use Demul for the games it doesnt, which is all the WinCE games mostly.

@Lordmonkus Can we make a list for every console to include the best Standalone emulator and then best core or have an alt emulator so there are two listed for each console? It seems like this list didn't cover everything I was wondering about. It would also be cool to see that in an FAQ that gets updated. Do we have anything like that on this site anywhere?

Maybe a table with 4 columns: Accuracy (closest to the console itself or reference Emulator or core if it's the same for this cell) Speed, Performance (higher graphics/music), and Retroarch core. I think that would cover a lot of questions for people going forward. Thank you all in advance.

Be my guest, go ahead and make one, I won't be doing that.

If someone wants to make and maintain such a list as well as test all the emulators and updates when they happen they can go right ahead and do it. I will sticky the thread.

yeah any list would need to include performance guidelines because which core or stand alone emulator will be best will rely heavily on your PC specs. Also emulator specific features such as upscaling and other things could also heavily influence which emulator the user wants to use.

an odd question but im curious if anyone has an answer.

i installed retroatch, i installed Saturn beetle (mednafen) i installed the beetle bios required. Now here's were it gets confusing....

i select beetle core, open panzer dragoon 2 and it works fine. I try and do the same for fighters mega mix....refused to load...instead opens up with Khronos?

anyone got any ideas why it's not opening with what i told it to.

also has mednafen got NO options to improve things such as AA or MSAA or anything else? The games look utterly terrible by every other emulators standards that I've used. I know the games DID look that bad originally but even my ps1 emulator has options to try and improve the looks. Don't any of the Saturn emulators have this basic feature?

Which format is your fighters megamix in? ZIP? CHD? BIN/CUE?

bin and cue. Basically the same as PD2 which is also bin/cue. I wasn't aware any of the emulators ran any of the games in zip format

Apparently Kronos supports zipped BIN+CUE. I loaded fighters megamix with beetle saturn core in CHD format and CUE format separately and both formats loaded fine with the beetle saturn core. BIN however isn't supported with beetle saturn core, only Yabause and Kronos cores. If you are loading the CUE file and selecting beetle saturn core and it's still loading Kronos instead, try deleting Yabause and Kronos cores and load with beetle saturn core again and see what happens.

is there a way for me to change the format from bin/cue to CHD/cue?

Go to this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-ElaPpvBHs5aUd0QUM3c05kY2c/view and download the zip file (Download button is the 2nd icon at the top right corner of the page). Extract the contents into an empty folder anywhere on your PC. Cut and paste the BIN and CUE files of the games that you want to convert to CHD into this same folder and double click the "CUE or GDI to CHD.bat" file and the BIN and CUE files of a game will be merged and converted into a single CHD file per game.

I posted this in another thread, but since it's applicable directly to the question in this thread, I figured I'd post it here as well as it might help others decide what to use.

Some of the stand-alone emulators I use for different systems. I do use RetroArch for many systems, and in some cases the below systems also have Retroarch cores. But I find the stand-alone emulators works better/faster for the below if they do have a Retroarch core alternative... IMO.  In many of the systems below I've tested multiple stand-alone emulators, but ended up with these as they seem to work best for my system/preferences:

- Atari 5200 - Altirra - http://www.virtualdub.org/altirra.html
- Commodore 64 - Hosx64 - http://www.hoxs64.net/
