Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition - Manuals & Modules

View File

After months of amassing the artwork, descriptions, playlists, and details, I have the first version of the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition Launchbox Platform! The system contains artwork for around 486 PDF files and 14 Playlists detailing manuals, adventures, errata, character sheets, DM rewards, etc. for use in your 5th edition gaming sessions.

This is not a video game system but a PDF e-reader system for Dungeons & Dragon 5th Edition. THERE ARE NO D&D5E PDFs FOR DOWNLOAD, ONLY IMAGES AND DB FILES FOR USE WITH LAUNCHBOX! I will NOT provide you with PDFs or links to them. A simple Google search will return a "Trove" of results. If you already possess the PDF modules/books, this is simply an art-driven way to collect them all together and make it easy to find and launch for your D&D 5E gatherings.

Simply extract the RAR archive to the ..\Launchbox\ directory. Once the files have fully extracted, open LaunchBox. You should see the new D&D 5th Edition Platform, although it may need the Playlists reattached.

In order to get the playlists to show up under the 5th Edition Platform, you'll need to do one of the following:

  1. BACK UP ANY XML FILES BEFORE YOU EDIT THEM. I am not responsible for you damaging your playlists, parents, or platforms.
  2. WHILE INSIDE LaunchBox, set the left menu to PLAYLISTS. Right click on each D&D5E playlist and select EDIT. Click on the Parents Tab. Click the + next to the directory tree. Check the box next to D&D 5th Edition.
  3. (OPTIONAL) A bit faster way to do this for those that know how to edit XML code.
    1. CLOSE LAUNCHBOX.
    2. COPY the XML code from the included Parents-D&D5E.XML file and APPEND it into the PARENTS.XML file located in your ..\LaunchBox\Data\ folder. DO NOT OVERWRITE THE FILE OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR PARENTS.
    3. Re-open LaunchBox. If you were successful, you should see the Playlists under the D&D 5th Edition Platform.

To add the D&D 5th Edition Platform Description, You will need to do one of the following

  1. BACK UP ANY XML FILES BEFORE YOU EDIT THEM. I am not responsible for damaging your playlists, parents, or platforms.
  2. Inside LaunchBox, set the left menu to PLATFORM CATEGORY. Right-click on the D&D5E PLATFORM and select EDIT. Click on the NOTES Tab. PASTE in the following description from Wikipedia:

In January 2012, Wizards of the Coast announced that a new edition of the game, at the time referred to as D&D Next, was under development. In direct contrast to the previous editions of the game, D&D Next was developed partly via a public open playtest. An early build of the new edition debuted at the 2012 Dungeons & Dragons Experience event to about 500 fans. Public playtesting began on May 24, 2012, with the final playtest packet released on September 20, 2013.

The 5th edition's Basic Rules, a free PDF containing complete rules for play and a subset of the player and DM content from the core rulebooks, was released on July 3, 2014. The Starter Set was released on July 15, featuring a set of pre-generated characters, a set of instructions for basic play, and the adventure module Lost Mine of Phandelver. The Player's Handbook was released on August 19, 2014. The fifth edition Monster Manual was released on September 30, 2014. The Dungeon Master's Guide was released on December 9, 2014. The edition returns to having only three core rule books, with the Player’s Handbook containing most major races and classes.

Mechanically, 5th edition draws heavily on prior editions, while introducing some new mechanics intended to simplify and streamline play.

Skills, weapons, items, saving throws, and other things that characters are trained in now all use a single proficiency bonus that increases as character level increases. Multiple defense values have been removed, returning to a single defense value of armor class and using more traditional saving throws. Saving throws are reworked to be situational checks based on the six core abilities instead of generic d20 rolls. Feats are now optional features that can be taken instead of ability score increases and are reworked to be occasional major upgrades instead of frequent minor upgrades.

The "advantage/disadvantage" mechanic was introduced (and was inspired by the mechanics of the avenger class from 4th edition), streamlining conditional and situational modifiers to a simpler mechanic: rolling two d20s for a situation and taking the higher of the two for "advantage" and the lower of the two for "disadvantage" and canceling each other out when more than one apply.

The power system of 4th edition was replaced with more traditional class features that are gained as characters level. Clerics, druids, paladins, and wizards prepare known spells using a slightly modified version of the spell preparation system of previous editions. Healing Surges are replaced by Hit Dice, requiring a character to roll a hit die during a short rest instead of healing a flat rate of hit points.

  3. (OPTIONAL) A bit faster way to do this for those that know how to edit XML code.

    1. CLOSE LAUNCHBOX.
    2. COPY the Platforms-D&D5E.XML file and PASTE it OVER THE EXISTING D&D 5TH EDITION section in the Platforms.XML file located in your ..\LaunchBox\Data\ folder.
    3. If you don't see the platform in the XML, STOP what you are doing. You may not have extracted the Platform to the correct location or opened Launchbox since extraction.
    4. Re-open Launchbox.

If you own a copy of BigBox, open it up and view the D&D 5th Edition Platform. The Platform looks the best under the CriticalZoneV2 theme. There will certainly be future updates as I refine the platform more.

If you encounter any bugs or have trouble getting the platform to work, please let me know.

Hope you enjoy!
