Sounds like your user account doesn't have the proper write permissions to the folder LaunchBox is in then. I will say running as admin can cause other problems related to relative pathing though down the line so I'd suggest moving your install to another location without the permission issues.

The mini-PC I recently purchased came preinstalled with Windows 11. It's my first time using it but since I didn't have to install it myself, I thought I'd give it a go. Verdict: I loathe it...

I've since installed Windows 10 LTSC. Got rid of my Win 11 problem and its permissions problem at the same time.

I know that support for Windows 10 is running short... But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Win 11 is an abomination.

Fair enough, I was just curious because it seems even people into the real NeoGeo hardware seem to like and prefer the Unibios because it gives you the option to pick AES or MVS and region easily. I wouldn't think to really call it a mod or a hack unless you are using the cheats.

Sorry for resurrecting an ancient thread but I'm struggling with this now.

If you tell MAME to open a rom and use unibios, how do you tell unibios you want AES mode?

Say I launch Metal Slug using "mame.exe -bios unibios40 mslug" the bios is set to MVS by default and I can't see how to change it to AES

  3. Thank you. That got rid of the error going fullscreen.  But... Now games have no sound 😭

It's weird.... The game launches in fullscreen, no sound. Then if I exit fullscreen into windowed mode, the sound starts working 🤪 But that's a different issue requiring a different fix. Thanks for the info on editing the ini file.

    Disable the "Extract ROM" box.

Thank you. The core now loads.

As expected I'm now getting incompatible ROM errors... So I either need to update my romset (which I would really prefer not to do) or roll back to v1.0.0.02 of the FBneo core.  FBneo is such a royal pain in the arse.

Anyone know where to download depreciated Retroarch cores?

  5. I've tried a bunch of cores: fbneo_libretro, fbalpha2012_neogeo_libretro, fbalpha2012_libretro, mame2000_libretro, mame2003_libretro, mame2003_plus_libretro, mame2010_libretro, mame_libretro

All have the same result: mouse cursor turns into a pinwheel for a few seconds while it tries to load and then... nothing.

These roms (Metal Slug games) were working fine with the fbneo_libretro core last week. I updated all Retroarch installed cores and now not working.  Normally with FBneo core compatibility issues due to new release I'd expect the core to load and present the "this rom is known but..." error message but that's not happening. Nevertheless I think that is the issue.

Is it possible to download FBneo v1.0.0.02 core from somewhere? Google isn't showing up much when I search.

Also would love an alternative emulator which has command line switches (can be used with Launchbox) if anyone has recommendations. Only thing is I definitely want to play the roms in home console (AES) mode; not the arcade cabinet (MVS) mode.

  6. I got a reply from someone over at TheOven.org who is already running WinPE as the OS in their arcade cabinet!  There is light at the end of the tunnel :)

I have asked them a bunch of questions because I am honestly out of my depth.

They were also interested to hear about the Launchbox frontend and just downloaded it to check it out :)

@ichimitch That should just about cover it, though you may be missing some DirectX libraries if you only have DirectX 11. Make sure you have every DirectX library ever (you'll need them for emulators anyways). This should include all of them: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

Also, you'll need to make sure both Big Box and LaunchBox separately are configured to use VLC instead of Windows Media Player, as obviously Windows Media Player won't be included.

Running Big Box on ancient hardware isn't going to work out very well, but I am interested to know if you successfully get everything running on WinPE. :)

I'm honored to get a response from the man Jason himself; and so quickly :)

Thanks for the input. I'll head over to the TheOven.org right now to ask the guys there how I can go about adding the rest of the DirectX
    libraries.

  8. I'm a Launch Box user from way back. Before the days of Big Box mode. I then found myself way too busy with work and family to have any fun :( So now that I'm gloriously unemployed (I'm honestly loving it) and have time to do what I love, Launch Box was on the top of my list. My how it has grown :)

I'm trying to compile a build of WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) which contains all of the dependancies for Launchbox and various emulators.

So far I've managed to compile a build which is 2.6gb in size and contains:
    .Net Framework
    C++ Runtime libraries
    Direct X 11
various .dll files needed for certain emulators

In this environment Launchbox runs fine in desktop mode. However Big Box mode crashes pretty much instantly.

I realize this is unintended usage and in no way warrants support. However if anyone here is able to tell me exactly what Big Box requires in order to run, I will be able to include those dependencies in my WinPE build.  So if anyone here has that knowledge it would be a great help to me!
