Ok I found a solution.
I made a quick batch file with Notepad:
ren *.mp4 *.video
I saved it in the videos folder as ExtensionChange.bat, double-clicked to run, and viola! The video extension bypasses some HVEC features of K-Lite. Rather than buy the $1 pack they offer, you can just change the extension of the videos.
