So now I'm curious how the theme changes (if at all) when the video preview isn't 4:3.

I think you are a little confused i'm afraid. What you see in the video/screenshots of this theme is a video of the gameplay of a game, not the actual game running in a emulator, its just a video preview of the game you are about to load.
Oh interesting. So the entire theme vanishes when you play the game?
Sorry for the confusion. I'm used to RetroPie / Emulation Station. I guess those themes work differently. -

Themes have no interaction with the actual games at all. That is handled by the actual emulator, if it even has those sort of options.
I'm not sure I understand. When I play a game with just an emulator and set it to output at the native game resolution (or 1x, 2x etc), different games will take up different amounts of the screen and have black bars on either the top/bottom or sides of the monitor, depending on the orientation, and the bars can be varying size, depending on the output. I would assume the theme has some "window" for the emulated game, or it assumes the game occupies a specific amount of space in the center, then adjusts the top and bottom accordingly. So are the top/bottom sections hard coded to specific resolutions, or do they adjust automatically based on the emulation output and the physical screen resolution? e.g. Does the theme just look for any open space at the top and bottom and use whatever it finds?

I haven't had a chance to setup Launchbox yet, but I'm curious how this theme handles actual vertical orientation games. Every game in the video seems to be 4:3. What happens when you play a vertical orientation game (e.g. 3:4 or similar)?

Understood. Thanks.
I just purchased a license today to play around with it.
So far, it seems like you can't switch monitor orientation without restarting Big-Box, unfortunately. The theme looks "confused" until you restart Big-Box, after switching. Maybe I can ask Jason, et. al. to see if this can be fixed.
