Those are MAME example (yet functional for their intended purpose) config files.  That dart might have hit the board, but it didn't stick and is laying on the ground, in shame. ;)  Remove that.  Hahahaha.  I removed that straight away.

How the controls were mapped (in the old MAME) depends on the encoder being used and the mode that it's in (keyboard input or XInput).  Though with either mode, you'd still have, at minimum, the Player 1 controls working (P1 coin, P1 start and the buttons and joy).  But you indicate that none of the controls work.  If I said none work, I misspoke.  The coins for player one work properly.  But the movement for player one is actually the player 3 joystick.  One of the buttons for player 3 pulled up some audio options.  None of the other buttons work lol.  Just a mess.

    Two options:

Ask your friend very nicely - "I screwed up my MAME installation and had to reinstall it and now none of the buttons or controls work. How do I fix it?"

I did tell him already that I buggered this all up.  And asked about fixing the controls.  He said "oh boy".  Haha.  He is trying to figure out what file he has that might work for me.  But as I mentioned a while back, he knows WAY more that myself, but is def still building his knowledge base.

Map them yourself.  Start MAME. Select "General Settings".  Select "Input Assignments".  Select "Player 1 Controls".  Start mapping, then do the same for players 2 - 4.  Just do the 4  movements, the buttons that player has and their coin and start.

That was pretty much my next step....not that big of a task.  I probably should have just started doing that as soon as they didn't work.

Though with a proper encoder, you really shouldn't to remap any of them.  The defaults should just work.

I think I need to look at the other mame settings a little more thoroughly.  I very well could have missed something!

Now, if you know what changes you made to the 'old' MAME which screwed it up in the 1st place, just undo all those and use it.  Then slowly start redoing those one-by-one until it breaks again.  Then undo the last one.

I honestly can't remember all the changes I made now.  lol.  It wasn't many though.  I really just messed with .ini files.  The main mame.ini and some of the presets.  Things went haywire when I changed that command line prompt.  Although I obviously did something else to make shit go haywire.  But for the life of me, I can't remember what that would be.

  2. Is the game actually loading? At all?  Or when you go to launch it, maybe you see a black screen for a quick moment, then it goes right back to LB.

Yes, sir.  It loads like normal through LB/BB and just by launching mame by itself.  I can start playing, and it would just randomly pop up the game over screen and then go out of focus.  The out of focus mame screen would still be the game running.  I could click on it in windows to bring it back into focus.  But then it would just do it again.

And now for the "new" mame/arcade emulator.  I did all of that and everything seems to be back to normal.  Expect for the controls....none of those seem to be mapped anymore......Is there simply a file I need to move from the old mame folder to fix that?

  3. When launching from LaunchBox, does the game have focus (like it should)?  Yes.  Until it randomly kicks me out and loses focus.

And the game is full screen (it covers the entire screen, and you can't see the Windows taskbar)?  Correct.

And when exiting the game, LB regains focus (like it should)?  AKA, everything works as it should via LaunchBox.  Kind of.  I don't get a chance to exit the game....it does that for me lol.

It's just when launching a game from BigBox, the game doesn't have focus?  If you press Alt+Tab, is the game now in focus and full screen?  BigBox seems to be acting the same as LaunchBox.  Everything starts fine, game is in focus.  Then bam, game goes out of focus.  Can still hear it.  And I believe controls are still active for it (as they no longer respond to LB/BB.

Obviously this seems to be a mame issue.  All the other emulators and games work as they should.  I must have had something buggered in my mame.ini when we changed the settings in LaunchBox to use the mame video settings.  Do you think that is an accurate assessment?  Think I need to take this thing "back to formula".  To quote the Green Goblin from Spiderman.

I haven't had any issues since he delivered this unit.  Has worked perfectly, no issues at all, until I started messing with things.  I had just been running it through Bigbox as intended.  But I really wasn't too impressed with the jaggy's.  I understand it's old technology being displayed on new, but I just wanted it to look closer to the original.  Which with some .ini file settings I was able to achieve.  I had originally asked him if he knew why they weren't displaying through LB/BB.  He had no clue lol.  This is only the second one he has built.  The first was for himself.  He is still learning as well.  Said if I figure it out he would like to come over so I can show him how it's done.  Which led me to this forum :D  Now I really wish I was more involved from the start.

Sooo, I had never looked before to see if BB/LB was opening a separate window for mame, or if it was running "embedded" through the front end software.  Does that make sense, or am I just making this more confusing?

I think I just figured this out.  I ran the Nintendo Emulator and a separate window from BB is there.  All the other emulators still work fine....

  6. I don't think I mapped any buttons that shouldn't have been.  I did the alt+tab, and all that is runnig is bigbox, and mame.    Anywho, I removed all .ini files I made.  Put the command line back to the way it was, and it's still having problems.  I'm back to the original video settings though lol.  It seems to be leaving BB as the visible image on the screen, but isn't the "active" window if that makes sense.  It's like I minimized it without minimizing it.  So the controls aren't working.  I just have to move the mouse on the computer running it all, and I have control again.  But it keeps happening when I exit a game.  Think I've really done something goofy.  The guy who made this is a friend, and has an image of the hard drive to put on if needed.  But I really want this to look like it can (not so jaggy).  The settings I found online are such a HUGE improvement.  Any ideas?  Also, let me say thanks for taking the time to help out someone who obviously is in over his head.  It really didn't seem all that difficult when I first started trying this all out.

  7. I was, which is why I was originally confused as to why the settings worked in mame by itself but not LB/BB.  But once I made your recommended changes, I closed everything, rebooted and started up Bigbox fresh.  Launchbox actually has mame grabbing the roms from a different folder than mame itself.  I even removed the couple of roms I had moved for testing purposes thinking that might have been part of the issue.  It seemed to be working as expected, but once I changed games issues popped up.  I checked windows, and there was actually bigbox and 2 separate mame's running....I am utterly confused.  Which according to my wife is commonplace.  haha
