  1. I'd like to throw my $0.02 into this thread, as it's a topic I'm interested in.

Currently as I write this, the latest Mesen core available for RetroArch is version 0.9.9. The latest stand-alone Mesen is 2.0.0. The developer basically forked off to a new major source tree called Messen2 with this project, but has not (as of now) created a mesen2 RetroArch core.

Mesen 0.9.9 does support HD Packs, but doesn't have ALL the features that Mesen2 HD Packs allow for, which is why we have some users reporting "doesn't work" while others do.

In my testing, results vary from HD pack to HD pack, because some of them just don't do as much. For example "Duck Hunt HD" actually does work on RetroArch Mesen core, because it's a really simple pack.

On the other hand, MetroidHD is amazing and includes both starting from a modified ROM and then auto-patching it with an IPS file for even more customization, AND it uses basically all the features Mesen supports. It DOES NOT work on Retroarch, only Mesen2 natively. I still need to test through various games and stuff, but I believe the main delineator here is simply the Mesen version bump and resulting additional features.

For maximum convienience, I believe if you wish to dabble in HD packs, for now, just stick to native builds of Mesen2. It's available on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Mac & Linux use SDL2 rather than .NET6

  2. I have not been working on any emulator stuff for quite a while (as my lack of activity on here would reflect). I don't even remember what OS I was using at the time, nor do I have AHK installed anymore. At some point I'll probably get back into it, but I don't want to make any commitments here that I couldn't keep, so I can't really help. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  3. Woah, that's more complicated than what I've been doing. I use RetroArch's built-in "Hotkey Enable" button feature for this type of stuff.

The problem I was trying to solve was that the Playstation DualShock controller is almost a perfect 1:1 mapping for the Xbox controller, with only the Guide button as an extra one.

In RetroArch I set the Guide button up as the "Hotkey enable" button, and then have the bumpers & triggers mapped to fast forward, rewind, and save & load. To use these in-game, I have to hold the Guide button and then press like Left Trigger to Rewind (for example). It was a little weird to get used to this setup at first, but it does the trick for me and it's 100% just using RetroArch's native functionality, so I didn't have to even use an AHK script or anything.

  4. I don't know if this is the right place to post about Beta issues, but I figured I'd put out a feeler to see if anybody else is having issues. I have verified that on the same machine where LaunchBox is installed & running I can login to files.emumovies.com using an FTP client, and have re-entered my credentials in LaunchBox, but I'm getting errors when I try to import ROMs into LaunchBox since the update this morning.

    Can anybody confirm?

  5. Good job, man! The reason I asked is because I was wondering if would make sense to make a version that says "Final Burn Alpha", since that's the current branch of FB that a lot of people use (as far as I know).

  6. That Final Burn image with Ken from Street Fighter isn't worth trying to save IMO. It's so distorted it took me a minute to even see that's what's in the image, plus a good half of the FB gameset isn't Capcom and Ken isn't even really the "mascot" character from the SF series, so I think it'd make a lot more sense to just have the Final Burn logo be just the icon / logo, or the nice full text logo @ClownClone posted. Honestly, just the icon logo isn't that great because even though I'm a video game nerd who's used emulators since the 90s, I still look at the FB logo and say, "Wait, what is that again?".

@ClownClone, did you use a particular font for that, or just make / dig that up somewhere?

  7. 12 hours ago, Norfair said:

Two month later I finally realized that the drivers wasn't completely installed. The wireless usb dongle was installed correctly, but the actual controller had some generic driver when in wireless mode.

Now I only have one problem left. The AutoHotKey integration in LB doesn't work. The input from the controller isn't registered at all.

Has anyone successfully set up a Xbox One Controller with the AutoHotKey integration?

What part isn't working for you? Just curious as I spent like a week pulling my hair out trying to figure out the 360 Guide button. Ended up being a combination of things.

  8. Here's the rest of the Commandos games :D

I am working on that blasted Legend Of Heroes logo also, just need to match a good font for the bottom lettering, probably will have it sorted out in the next couple hours.

  9. So, I'm sure most of you guys are aware that Nintendo's new "NES Classic" has actually come out in the USA at a street price of $60, and is selling out super fast at many retailers. While the styling of the device itself is very "retro", it seems to be, for all intents and purposes, some kind of purpose-built hardware that just runs an NES emulator and lets you switch between 30 built in ROMs. It also has save states. I'm curious what people here make of this.

My take on this: much like with their Amiibos and other stuff, Nintendo has a knack for making products that I have absolutely no practical need for but are still charming and tempt me to buy them just because "I want it!". Like, in this case, having to use the boxy old style NES controllers with super short wires and being limited to only 30 games and only the stock interface are all reasons I shouldn't want or need this device. I've got a super powerful computer with LaunchBox and wireless controllers. And yet... I still kinda want one, not gonna lie.

One thing that is interesting is that many reviews I've read have made mention of the video output coming off this thing as being super nice. They have 3 different display modes, but generally it seems like people are just going for a crisp "original pixels" look, which is surprising. I'm using a scanline shader setup for most of my old RetroArch platforms, including NES, and it "looks the most right" to my eyes.

  10. Same issue on multiple games? The tricky thing with DreamCast games is that there are lots of releases floating around online which are not "100% untouched" originals, as games have been modified to make them burnable in a lot of cases. Usually the easiest way to control for this is to test both a couple different games, and if you can, several releases of the same game.
