it works in that it closes it, but is there a way to make the menu screen appear when you hit esc?

When I try to close a playstation game from launched from launchbox (by hitting escape, which usually works when i launch epsxe independently), for some reason, all it does is just close the windo, it doesnt bring up the menu. whats worse, the game keeps running in the background and i can only close it from the task manager.
any tips?
