Sony PlayStation - Pending Game Changes

Recommended Posts

I've been adding some complicated changes to untangle some mistakes in the PS1 database recently, especially where regional versions of games have been paired up incorrectly. Some of these changes may be counter to existing sources on the internet (because Wikipedia is gospel, apparently), but have been self-verified by playing the games myself.

Been posting explanations on Discord, but I'll post and update some explanations here too, if anyone sees these changes and wants further info. Cheers.

Victory Boxing Series - Pending

  • Kensei - The King of Boxing (Japan) has been marked for delete, and related images have been submitted to existing entry Victory Boxing: Champion Edition (Europe).
  • Alt. names and images for Victory Boxing Challenger (Europe) (En,Fr,De,Es) have been removed from Contender 2 (USA) and replaced with info/images for Victory Boxing Contender (Europe).
  • Victory Boxing Challenger (Europe) (En,Fr,De,Es) / Victory Boxing (Japan) have been submitted as a new entry.

This is all over the place, all over the internet. From playing/inspecting the games themselves as well as YouTube videos, I've found these to be the correct region pairings

- Contender (USA) / Dynamite Boxing (Japan) / Victory Boxing 2 (Europe)
- Contender 2 (USA) / Victory Boxing Contender (Europe) / Funky Boxers (Japan)
- NO NTSC-U RELEASE / Victory Boxing Challenger (Europe) (En,Fr,De,Es) / Victory Boxing (Japan)
- NO NTSC-U RELEASE / Victory Boxing Champion Edition (Europe) / Kensei - The King of Boxing (Japan)

The current DB pairing of Contender 2 (USA) and Victory Boxing Challenger (Europe) is incorrect. The game has the same cover art and opening FMV, but it's clear from game modes, HUD UI, etc. that these are two different games.

Dec 22 Edit - These changes passed moderation, but someone has been resubmitting the removed bad alt. name pairings, which is going to lead to bad imports / matches in the future. Will keep an eye on it.
Dec 31 Edit - Found the Japan version of Contender 2 / Victory Boxing Contender! Updated above.

Konami Football Games (ISS / Pro Evo / J.League) - Pending

Konami tends to use each game and engine for at least two releases - A Japanese-only release with teams from J.League (will have that in the name), and an international team release with ISS / World Soccer in the name.

Trying to fix some incorrect data / links between all of these, so changes I'll be submitting are the ones in red. Thanks.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: 2nd Edition

Edits:

These are two different games, released with the same name:

  • Europe version is developed by Hothouse Creations and published by Eidos Interactive, just like the first edition.
  • USA version is developed by Jellyvision and published by Buena Vista Interactive. Although uncredited on this particular release, Jellyvision developed all USA versions of the game series, and the UI reuses elements from You Don't Know Jack, Jellyvision's other famous quiz series.
Quote

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Wants_to_Be_a_Millionaire%3F#Video_game_adaptations:
Between 1999 and 2001, Jellyvision produced five games based on the U.S. network version for PCs and the PlayStation, all of them featuring Philbin's likeness and voice. The first of these adaptations—Who Wants to Be a Millionaire—was published by Disney Interactive, while the later four were published by Buena Vista Interactive which had just been spun off from DI when it reestablished itself in attempts to diversify its portfolio.

Further proof of being different games with different engines, UI, etc:

Dance Dance Revolution - Pending, Second Attempt

This single database entry currently refers to two different games, both named 'Dance Dance Revolution', that were released separately in Japan only and USA only respectively.

Wikipedia also lists these as two separate games in their master list of PS1 games, as well as having two individual pages for each game on their site:

Japanese Release

A port of the original (1st Mix) arcade game, released in 1999. First ever DDR game on a home console.

North American Release

The first home console release outside of Japan, released in 2001. Sometimes referred to as 'USA Mix' within the community to differentiate it from the Japanese PlayStation release. Game engine / interface is based on 'Dance Dance Revolution 3rd Mix', another Japanese-only PlayStation release that pairs with the 3rd Mix arcade game. However, the song list is unique for North America licensing, and contains a 'best of' from the three Japanese home console releases that had been released so far.

For further proof that the USA release is a different game from the Japanese game of the same name, and instead based on Japanese 3rd Mix, here's screenshots from that 3rd Mix release (video here)
