Pause every time I launch a game

Strange behavior - every time I launch a game (not start actual game play but rather just selecting a game which starts the ROM image) it pauses about 5-10 in.  I can easily unpause by hitting the spacebar... but it's a bit annoying and it's probably something stupid I did somewhere.

I tried looking for some kind of scripting function that's running each time I play a game, but I can't find such a control.

When I tried searching for "pause every game start" I'm only seeing results for ~ screens locking up (e.g. it has to be killed by Task Manager).

 

Any suggestions on where to look/how to triage?
