Problem mounting DOSBOX in Mac OSX

Hi. Dos newbie here. I am trying to install DOSBOX to enable running Microprose Grand Prix 1. The info in the  program says to create a folder with C [tilde]/dosprogs. Does it really mean the tilde or is that shorthand for some other symbol? I would have expected c:/dosprogs but that doesn't work. Apologies if it's a silly question but it's very frustrating! Thanks.
