Anyway to boost framerate and resolution for NES games? Or just improve performance?

My Launchbox setup is using Higan but I'm pretty disappointed with it. The frame rate for my NES games seems poor. Like not stutteringly bad, but enough that something seems off to me. My PC has a dedicated GPU and should easily power through these games, but they just don't feel smooth.
