About This File

Trackball & Spinner Support for BigBox Navigation.  Supports X & Y axis (configurable) to simulate up/down/left/right menu movement.   Option menu support to configure speeds and behavior.

Its not perfect, but it does work pretty well.  It disables itself when a game is launched.

If there is interest in the source, I can put it up on github or something.   Just ask.

This is pretty great!

Trackball control is basically like a joystick or keyboard: x-axis jumps a letter. (# - A - B - C - etc)  y-axis cycles through individual games.

Spinner control is treated like the x-axis, so turning the dial jumps letters.  That seems like unexpected behavior though... If there was an option to set the spinner to use the y-axis, this would be perfect.  A sensitivity adjustment would be nice too, but I'm thrilled this exists at all.

There is a sensitivity adjustment...  at least there should be.

Swapping axis's is a good idea - I thought I included that?   I'll have to take a look.

Ok, found all the settings in BigBox -> [Esc] -> Trackball / Spinner Settings (see attached photo).  Sensitivity is there, along with a helpful tip for spinners to set threshold and max steps.  Thank you!  I just wasn't looking in the right place for the settings previously.

If you're open to suggestions (or if you're willing to open-source it), things that would be nice to see would be:

  • Change the axis for spinners to go up / down.  You can enable/disable the x or y axis, but they can't be swapped.  Inverting direction just swaps right to left and vice versa, or up to down and vice versa.  For trackballs, it's great.  If there's a way to detect a spinner and assign it the y-axis that would be amazing.  Maybe a solution would be to assign different behavior for each mouse-like device (like Mame's multimouse).  My cabinet has a spinner, trackball, and mouse, and the plugin currently treats them all as one device.  I've considered using AutoHotKey to capture my spinner and translate it to up and down arrow keypresses, then deactivating it when a game is open.  Not sure if that would be any easier than tweaking this plugin...?

  • Once this plugin is installed, pressing Esc and navigating BigBox menus is best done with the keyboard.  All mouse movements (including trackballs and spinners) are translated into arrow presses.  If you tab out of BigBox into another application, moving the mouse continues to move a text cursor left / right / up / down as if you're pressing the arrow keys.  It works great when you start a game and the plugin disables itself until you exit back to BigBox, but it doesn't seem aware of BigBox losing focus, or if BigBox is in its [Esc] menu.  No idea how difficult it would be to just make it active when browsing games so you can still navigate BigBox settings with a mouse.

Thanks for writing this plugin!  For cabinets with a trackball, it's currently a near perfect solution.

That's why I added the toggle - so you could disable it to do menu control.   Sorta worked.

Would you rather the source be included as an additional archive here, or should I github it?   I was hoping LB/BB would add native support for this soon, and this plugin would just fade away.   But for whatever reason, that feature has been de-prioritized for like..  years now.

Whatever is easiest for you.  Github would give you more control if someone else wants to contribute to it (like me!).  Either way, being able to tinker with the source would be amazing.
