@RuHRoW If you need an older version please email support@unbrokensoftware.com and request a copy of 13.8 and advise you are on Win 7.

@vince16 Please do not supply download links to LB that are not directly from our website. It is preferred users get it from the source to ensure it is an official copy.

    OK, didn't know, sorry.

chatGPT says that may be b/c you're moving to the "Enterprise" edition. in-place upgrades seem to work for home/pro editions but "Enterprise editions often have specific deployment and upgrade requirements that differ from consumer versions".

Thanks for the offer. If you can send it to me via this forum (dm?) i'll give it a shot. Otherwise, I can wait a day and see if the admins respond.

Would something called "Window PE 10 1511 LiveOS Bootable [Portable] x86-x64" cut it?

    Who's "ChatGPT"?

Do you have a particular file hosting website that you prefer?

Edit: you can download Launchbox 13.8

You don't need to format to upgrade Windows, at least not for several versions of windows. Just create the USB boot drive and choose the "upgrade this machine option" and not the one that says "wipe and reinstall" or similar wording.

I found a copy of Windows 10 Enterprise that says you can't upgrade from an older version of Windows and need to do a fresh install though...

hi, I just downloaded this for the first time today.

I'm also running windows 7. I don't have older versions in my updates folder so how can I download 13.8?

Would recommend adding a separate link for first time users running windows 7 so they don't give up on this tool like I almost did (not that I've made up my mind)...

I suppose I could give you my  13.8 file that's in my "Updates" folder, but I'm not sure at all that's enough to install Launchbox entirely. But  I would be very surprised unbroken software don't let you choose which version of Launchbox you would like to install.

  5. By the way, does anyone know of a way to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 or 11? From within Windows I mean, not by formatting my whole f*cking hard drive and buying the disc and spending hours reinstalling the whole thing. A way to update Windows 7 much like some softwares like LB/BB do, whether for free or at a fee?

  6. If only you guys @ unbroken software could find some way to reenable retroachievements support in a future update at least, one that would use only the same assets as update 13.8 for us folks now officially stuck in the past. It should be possible since I have (fond) memories of playing my roms with Retroarch from Launchbox and unlocking plenty of achievements just a few updates ago. I don't know what killed the functionality, or why...

Not according to Jason's post about an hour ago.

You will just have to reinstall the last version that worked for you then make sure you uncheck the box in your updates setting for “Automatic downloads in the Background”. This way you stay in that version.

I unticked those boxes in the option menu and now it seems I can run Launchbox again, yes, thanks.

I went to the launchbox folder and I side that folder is an updates folder. Inside that folder is a whole bunch of install files for previous versions including 13.8. I just double clicked 13.8 and installed it. That was pretty much it I believe. You can install it directly over your current version. Let me know if you have that folder and if it worked for ya.

I'm sorry guys, but Microsoft (and other third party libraries) are making it near impossible to continue supporting Windows 7 (or 8, or 8.1) going forward. Eventually we have to update third party libraries to make sure that they don't have security issues, and sometimes it does break older versions of Windows, which is apparently what happened here. We updated to a newer version of Chromium (we didn't really have a choice on that one).

But the thing is, Launchbox/Bigbox keeps downloading the 13.9 update in the background, AFAIK there's no way to disable it, and when I switch to Launchbox or Bigbox it tries to install update 13.9, so I stop it from installing it, but then Launchbox or Bigbox don't start anymore... The only way I can start it now is to reinstall 13.8 update from the updates folder...every single time.

Surely there has to be a way to close the lid for Windows 7 users...? I can cope with not having the new LB/BB updates for as long as I stay on Windows 7, but not having to start LB/BB by reinstalling update 13.8 on top of everything every time. There's got to be another way...

  9. It worked, it seems. I think it has simply overwritten over version 13.9, thanks.

Please tell me there is a fix coming to let us users of Windows 7 upgrade to Launchbox 13.9 and the rest at some point, pretty pleaaaase. I had high hopes for update 13.9 after hearing it was going to repair the lost compatibility with retroachievements, to which retroarch hasn't been able to log in in months. Playing my oldies with the achievements was so much better!

Go to your \Launchbox\Updates folder. Run the installer from the version you want.

Make sure to look at the path it is installing. Make sure it is not \Launchbox\Launchbox. It needs to install to \Launchbox

That's precisely the problem: my "Launchbox" folder, which contains all the folders, the Launchbox.exe & Bigbox.exe and my license and stuff, is in a folder called "Launchbox - Bigbox", but I don't remember if I created it or if Launchbox created it, so when I double-click on Launchbox 13.8.exe I don't know how to write over the existing Launchbox 13.9... I'm afraid it's just going to create another instance of LB/BB.

    Isn't there a simpler method?

  11. I beg to differ, It kinda is, in mine, considering among the people who purchase the lifelong license I'm sure there are quite a few who are still on Windows 7. Gotta love the irony that a software that aims to make your collection of old arcade, adventure & console games from the 70s, 80s & 90s look good and all gathered in one place would require absolutely the latest Windows OS and not the one that came out in 2010 and is just what, a little over a decade old.

Plus, come on, as stated by the guys behind LB/BB, it's to "beautify" your games collection. It's hardly NASA tech you're gonna need in there...

  12. It's all in the title really. The last update, 13.9, has caused issues for us users of Windows 7 64 Bit. I for one cannot upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 right now. I'm not even sure there's a way to do that from Windows 7. So unless the team comes up with a fix soon, I'm simply deprived of Launchbox & Bigbox altogether, since the app flatout refuses to start now.

I'd like to know if there's a way to fall back on version 13.8. Double clicking on LaunchBox-13.8-Setup.exe in the updates folder is not what I call falling back on 13.8, that's installing a separate instance of Launchbox...

Aren't there just a couple files/folders to replace to fall back on 13.8?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Tried again by principle, no luck... Anybody else experiencing this ? I found online that installing the latest C++ Redistributable runtime sometimes solved similar errors in other software using the same library, but in my case, it did not either.

    Thanks again for ideas.

I have the same problem, and an other user too on another thread on the forum, it seems to be due to Windows 7 (64 Bit). Here's hoping the LB/BB team have a fix coming for us people.

In launchbox there is a folder called updates and inside that folder is previous version installers including 13.8. I installed that version over this version and I'm up and running again. I think this might be a windows 7 issue which is what I'm running and im guessing so are you.

Yep, Windows 7 64 bit user over here. Not too many people use this OS anymore, so I guess that's why there's not a lot of people complaining in the forum.

I tried simply deleting update 13.9 from that folder, but it broke LB/BB even more, so I restored it. How do you fall back on update 13.8 exactly? Mind explaining that?

Same error here. Just updated 2 minutes ago. Help!

Good to know I'm not alone. Here's hoping someone can help us. If someone could tell us at least how to fall back on version 13.8 it would be better than nothing because I can't run  LB/BB at all over here...

  16. I'm now getting this, whether I try to start Launchbox or Bigbox, right after downloading update 13.9 this very night (over here, for Europe). It used to work fine before, including yesterday with update 13.8. Here's the full error text:

Gee, thanks! Quickly done and looks great, too! Thank you very much!

Edit: hate to ask for a favor in return of an another favor, but since you're so skilled, is there a possibility that you could create a "Bezels & Overlays" silver ring at some point? I can't find any on the internet, and I wonder how come, it's like people don't need it, like they have bezels & overlays for each single one of their game..?

My bad I misread what you posted. For some reason when you said in BigBox the pdf "automatically uses a different reader than sumatra" I read that as it was using the BB default. Not sure what I was thinking.

If you deleted Sumatra did you also check to make sure in your BB settings you had to option ticked to "Use built-in pdf reader"?

Yeah I just checked a little while ago, the 2 boxes saying "use BB's default pdf reader for manuals" & "use BB's default pdf reader for additional apps", or w/e it is, are ticked.

It seems that, for whatever reason, BigBox only uses its default pdf reader for additional apps. It's the only case where I get to use it. For "platforms" (or "magazines" in this case), it's always looking for an emulator. I switched to CDisplayEX, but the problem is the same, I can only control it using the mouse, when BigBox's default pdf reader allows me to control it with my gaming controller.

It's a minor issue compared to some I've had before, but it's quite a bit annoying. Seems to me there is room right there for improvement in a future update.

In BB Settings > General ....all the way towards the bottom turn off the option to use built-in pdf reader. Then in Windows make sure you set Sumatra as your Default reader for pdf files.

Err, as a matter of fact, like I said I would like to use BigBox's default PDF reader, Chromium it's called apparently?, for everything. I tried deleting sumatra pdf reader as an emulator, hoping that BigBox would automatically fall back on its default pdf reader, but no dice. I have some artbooks and stuff that I added as additional apps to already existing games that use BigBox's default pdf reader, and I'm fine with that, but the magazines I added as platforms under the "Magazines" platform category require an emulator, and like I said earlier, that sumatra pdf reader that I add doesn't cut it for me. I'd much rather have BigBox's default pdf reader to read everything, not just the artbooks, guidebooks, user's manuals, but also the magazines.

I think turning off the option to use built-in pdf reader in BB settings is going to prove slightly counterproductive in this regard... :)

  20. May I have just a last question pertaining to pdf files in LB/BB? For whatever reason my digital artbook of ResEvil 6, when read in BigBox, automatically uses a different pdf reader than sumatra. The way you zoom in and out in that pdf reader, in bursts so to speak, makes it not ideal (being able to continuously zoom in and out smoothly, by keeping R2 or L2 pressed for ex. would be so much nicer), but it's certainly way better than sumatra pdf reader since the document can be controlled with a gaming controller. But all my other pdf files in BigBox, when launched, use sumatra pdf reader. It feels disjointed, not sure how to express it, to suddenly have to use a mouse in BigBox.

Is there a way to use whatever pdf reader BigBox uses by default for ALL my pdf files?

  21. Yeah I got that now, thanks for the tip. I used to not see what's in that "parents" window, let alone at the bottom of it, maybe because contrary to the platform categories that deal with real hardware and list all the different platforms in a long column, there is no list or column that appears in the "parents" tab of the edit menu for these.

Say, when I want to import my magazines, I have to add a new emulator, that actually happens to be a pdf reader, like sumatra pdf for example (in my case)? Then I import the pdf of the mags like they are roms?

  22. OMG... I create a category, IT THEN APPEARS in the large box in the "Parents" tab of the Edit menu, it's not on the same column and even says (category), you go there, untick the box "Root", scroll to the very bottom and see the category you created and tick the box, et voilà, c'est fait! Ahem, sorry, meant to say, et voilà, it's done. Dammit, I really didn't pay enough attention to the way that parents thing works. It's all right guys, thanks for your help, I think I finally got it.

    Sorry if I bothered you.
