  1. In the latest beta, using LaunchBox Next, deleting a game from a playlist switches to the all games list. Don't know if this is a new issue or not, just noticed it recently, but I think I've been doing most of my playlist management in LaunchBox classic.

  2. This is controlled by the "Combine ROMs with matching titles into a single game" import option. You can uncheck that if you want to avoid this in the future.

  3. If it doesn't load from within Retroarch either, make sure you have the correct versions of the bios. The PS1 core requires these specific files (from some wiki, and they work for me):

    • SCPH5500.bin - (NTSC-J) Required for Japan-region games.
    • SCPH5501.bin - (NTSC-U) Required for North America/US-region games.
    • SCPH5502.bin - (PAL) Required for Europe-region games.

  4. I don't know if it's still the case, but a while back (months ago), BigBox's background CPU usage was quite a bit higher when using VLC instead of Windows Media Player for videos. I was having problems using some of the more complex RetroArch shaders smoothly until I changed that option.

  5. This list isn't prioritized or anything. Just a quick brain dump of the stuff I can remember that annoys me from time to time:

    1. Mark completed in Big Box. There's menu items for the other flags, but not completed.
    2. Logo priorities like we have for other image types. I'd like to be able to prefer Steam Banners and fallback to Clear Logos, for example.
    3. Might be more of a DB thing, but I'm getting a ton of Japanese art in the root image folders instead of the region folders, so LaunchBox is randomly showing me Japanese box art when North American is also present.
    4. Scrape non-steam game art from Steam when available. Having to do more work for GOG games is annoying.
    5. Download game screenshots from Steam like we can with videos.
    6. In Big Box, be able to assign one button to cycle between platforms, playlists, statuses, etc. Having to use separate buttons for each cuts into the limited number available on a controller.
    7. Option to switch from background music to video audio when viewing game details.
    8. Don't deselect all but one game after doing batch editing.
    9. Allow remove from playlist when not viewing that particular playlist. Add to playlist pops out a submenu, why can't there be a Remove from playlist that does the same?
    10. Separate image priorities in LaunchBox and Big Box. In LB, I'd prefer not having fanart in the background, while I might want it there in BB.
    11. Remember last directory in pretty much all open dialogs.
    12. Some kind of default options per platform for image types to download might be nice. For example, I never download theme videos, and want to download Box Art from EmuMovies for all platforms except Windows, because they all have a jewel case look that isn't consistent with everything else.
    13. Less optimistic game name matching. For example, the other day, I had a game called "Knights" (not in the DB) matched to "Blood Knights". Very easy to miss these when doing a bulk import.
    14. A way to clear all metadata from a game. When fixing mismatched games, I frequently forget to go into all the tabs.
    15. Improve per-game DOSBox options. For example, having to use a complete custom config file to change "ems=true" to "ems=false" is really annoying, especially due to the next item in my list.
    16. Use DOSBox mounts and executables specified in LaunchBox when using a custom config. In my opinion, ideally a custom dosbox config should only need to contain the lines that are actually different from the default behavior.
    17. When importing MAME roms, an option to combine parents and clones would be nice. Currently they can only be combined if the names match. It would be nice to automatically combine stuff like Pac Man and Puck Man, preferably with some kind of region preference option.
    18. An option to import game metadata from Steam instead of the DB where available would be nice. The DB is frequently missing stuff like release dates and developers when the data is there on Steam.
    19. Big Box option to use random game videos for playlists when no playlist video exists. The platform version of this option doesn't seem to work for playlists.

    Also, #'s 1, 3 and 4 on lordmonkus's list would be great.

Also, also: This list got a bit long, so just want to offset that negativity by saying that I really like the program and it's completely replaced Steam as my frontend of choice at this point.

  6. I actually meant to report a similar thing back in the first beta with playlist support. As I recall, I had added some arcade games to playlists, then deleted all games from the platform and reimported, I then added the new games back into the same lists. In LaunchBox, only one entry showed up in the playlist, but in BigBox there were duplicates. It appears that the new import created games with a different ID but the same title (or maybe just the same rom name, don't remember for sure). The playlist XML file had both the old and new entries.

A feature I would absolutely love to see is the ability to add standalone windows games. For example: I have Another Metroid 2 Remake, and would love to be able to add it to launchbox

You can already do this. In the Main Menu, Game->Add... then set the Application path to the game's .exe file.

Edit: There's also Tools->Import->Windows Games, but I've never been able to get it to work. Just scans for hours before I get sick of waiting and kill it.

  8. The Platform and Platform Category sorting issues I had with the last build seem like they may be fixed. Haven't seen anything out of order in this build in any permutation of the sidebar options I've tried so far.

  9. Hard to say the exact cause without more specifics. I *think* MAME outputs errors to the console window, so you could try running "mame <romname>" in a command prompt and see if there's any helpful output. If you're using 64-bit mame, the command will be "mame64 <romname>" instead.

I checked both while testing, that's why I've said that I'm defintely sure that the sorting issue for platforms is now fixed for me ;)

K, just trying to make sure we're giving Jason accurate information, since this bug's gotta be driving him a bit crazy at this point :). I forget that the Platform Categories view even exists since I always just use Platforms, so the opposite could be true for other people.

  11. Did you check the platform sorting in the Platforms view or only in Platform Categories? For me, the platforms are only out of order under the conditions I described above and only in Platforms view. Under categories, the platforms themselves always seem correct.

The platforms themselves seem to be fixed for me now but unfortunately, the platform categories don't. They are still in non-alphabetical order when “Show All” is checked. When I un-check it everything is fine.

    All is checked:

    all.thumb.jpg.350df9ab45cbbafd7de2f2c0cae8ac13.jpgAll is un-checked;

    not_all.thumb.jpg.303c959a730ceb3888c15d7be4703809.jpg

I get this as well, but only if neither (None) or (Exists) are checked. Enabling either or both fixes the order.

  13. For me, in this build, platform sorting is correct, except in the case that the first four sidebar options are all checked (All, None, Exists and Counts). If any one of those is not checked, everything sorts correctly. Aligning the counts doesn't seem to have any effect on the order.

Edit: Playlists seem to always sort correctly now regardless of the sidebar options. In the previous build, having the All option enabled would screw up their order.

Edit #2: In case it's relevant, all my platforms have a custom sort title in the form "N YYYY-MM-DD", where N is 0 for arcade, 1 for console, 2 for handheld, 3 for computer, and YYYY-MM-DD is the release date.

  14. I was able to download platform videos earlier this morning (I think, maybe it was last night, kind of a blur right now for some reason), but there's a post in the Troubleshooting forum with someone else having similar problems. Maybe the server's just having issues right now.

  15. I thought it was GameDetailsView.xaml, not TextGamesView.xaml.

If you want to keep the view available, but also the option to skip it, you can use the Play button (default gamepad button 3, keyboard P) instead of the Select button when in the games list.

  16. Just tried out the manual playlist sorting, which works well once its set up. The UI for actually sorting them is kind of painful though. For example, I have an "IGN Top 100 SNES Games" playlist, and clicking the up and down arrows to move each item one position at a time would take forever. I ended up editing the XML by hand to just type in the manual order numbers, which is error prone (very easy to accidentally delete a bracket, for example). Perhaps that number should be editable in the UI? Also, it would be nice if the list auto scrolled to keep the selected item in view when move up/down was clicked. Move to top/bottom buttons might also be helpful.

Once in BigBox, the manually sorted list works, but there's no way to tell what part of the list I'm looking at. It would be nice if the list index was exposed to themes - possibly also an indication of the playlist being manually sorted - so that it could be displayed to the user. Ideally I'd like to display something like "List Position: #26", but preferably only for things in a top list.

Another minor thing is that there seems to be no way to use the manual order in List View inside LaunchBox. It appears to only apply to the Images View.

Ah, not currently. Though that is another interesting use case. As previously discussed, I won't be adding a bunch of complicated AND or OR logic to it in an effort to keep it easy to use. What we *could* do to address this particular use case is add a field for "Developer or Publisher".

It seems to me that general boolean logic support would be much better. I doubt you'll be able to add enough special case field groupings to satisfy everyone, and that approach doesn't seem like it would work with custom fields. Something along the lines of what ComicRack does with smartlists doesn't seem overly complex: http://comicrack.cyolito.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=guides:smartlists

Beta 10 is out now guys; Big Box now supports adding and removing games from playlists via the game details screen. I'm also really hoping (once again) that I've fixed the side bar sorting bug, so let me know.

Next I'm going to get back to the arcade playlists. :)

From a quick glance, it looks like my platforms are sorting correctly now, but my playlists are not if I have the All item enabled. Without the All item, everything sorts fine.

There seems to be an bug when trying to download images/media for me. None of the boxes are showing to be able to select or de-select things.

Just a guess, but maybe that's due to having Windows DPI scaling enabled? At least that looks like the 125% font instead of the default.

I finally got around to getting a beta version installed to check in on the playlists feature and really like it so far.

I do have one question / request for it though. Is there a way to manage playlists and settings for playlists in the Launchbox UI ? When I first made a playlist it asked if I wanted to have it show up in the platforms list and I picked yes, but then decided I didn't want that and found no easy way of changing that without editing the xml file for the playlist file itself.

It would be really handy to have a "Manage Playlists" entry in the "Options" menu where the "Manage Emulators" and "Manage Platforms" is. Hopefully this is part of the "to-do" list and if it isn't please add it :D

You can change the playlist options by right clicking the playlist in the side bar and selecting edit.
