  1. Thanks!  That was really helpful.  I was able to change the Retroarch.config file & the joystick works now

do you know the proper process for saving a config file in Retroarch for each core?  Not sure if I have to change autosave settings

Not sure how they would be named for each individual core, or how to tell them apart.  I assume retroarch  knows to load the proper config file when a core is loaded?

  2. This issues has been driving me nuts for weeks.  I can’t seem to figure it out.

I’m trying to configure Retroarch for the first time.  I want to use it to emulate NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, etc on my Arcade.   The arcade has an Xtension 2 player control panel, configured for keyboard inputs.   Works just fine with MAME games & the standalone MAME emulator.  But I’m just focusing on NES & Retroarch for now.  This should be simple, since I just need to enter control inputs for up, down, left, right, A, B, Start & Select.    I just can’t figure out Retroarch.

I’ll load the NES core in Retroarch (NestopiaUE), then go to Input and then Input User 1 Binds.   I assume these are the general inputs for Retroarch overall.   Not sure if I need to setup a config file for each core tho.

This should be simple, but it’s not.  I head down to the User 1 D-pad settings.  The correct settings should be up, down, left, right arrow keys.   When I press enter to change & then press down on my joystick, the key is changed to keypad2, not down.  So all my settings are set to keypad8, keypad2, keypad4, keypad6.    It doesn’t matter if I enter inputs with the joystick or arrow keys on the keyboard.   Doesn’t matter if the keyboard number lock is on or off.

So when I launch an NES game, the joystick controls do not work.   I’m at a loss how to fix.

I suppose I could manually change the config file in notepad++, but I cannot locate the config file on my hard drive, and I’m not sure if config files need to be made for each core.  And if individual config files need to be created, how do I get them to launch with each Retroarch core?

Setting up my Arcade has been a ongoing battle every step of the way.  So damn frustrating.  This shit is going to take me years.   Any help appreciated.

  3. I'm sorry for hitting you with all these questions, but it worked!

    Thank you :)

i was able to change the devices to mouse, loaded up crystal castles & the trackball worked.  Even figured out how to adjust the sensitivity settings.   The game image is zoomed a bit compared to Retroarch, so I'll have to look into display settings.

However my mind was just blown!  I set the highscore on Crystal Castles, then closed everything & restarted computer to verify.   When I relaunched, I noticed my high score for Crystal Castles was saved!   So does The standalone MAME Emulator save high scores for all games?!?!?   I will be so happy if this is true.

  4. Wait first I'd have to go to tools, manage emulators, then add to setup the standalone MAME64 Emulator.   Under the associated platforms tab, do I have to enter a default line parameter?  Like -L "mame.libretro.dll" ???

im very worried I'm going to change the Emulator settings for all MAME game to standalone and screw up and the configurations I've done in game already.

  5. Hmmm

well you are correct, when I hit esc RA will close.   So how do I get to the UI?  I'm assuming you mean User Interface.  You're also saying the changes won't stick, so am I correct in assuming that the trackball/spinner issue is related to RA.

So on these trackball & spinner games, you're saying use the standalone MAME Emulator.  I guess I can do that, as I have it downloaded, but I'm unfamiliar with it.  How would you change trackball/spinner settings in standalone?

first I'd have to RT click on game in launchbox, then edit, then under emulation tab change to MAME64?  That's what Ive done & it won't launch.

And how come there is no mouse 0/1 line in the Retroarch INI file that is in the settings folder?

Sorry im a slow learner at this stuff.

  6. No help guys??  Could really use some.  Not really understanding what I'm researching.

Ive read I should change mouse setting from 0 to 1 in my INI file, but I can't located that in my retroarch folders.  Ive also read there is no INI file for Retroarch MAME 0.188 core, so I'm not sure how to add a second mouse.

Ive looked into the Retroarch Input User Binds, and see that there is a setting for "mouse index" that is set to 0 by default. But that can be changed to any number, and I tried 1 and nothing happened.

And of course I went into a game's individual controller settings (golden tee) while playing, and tried to set the Track X analog & Track Y analog inputs using the trackball, but again, the trackball & spinner just move the mouse cursor around the the screen.

    Help is greatly appreciated:)

  7. So I'm learning how to setup the controls in MAME for my arcade cabinet, specifically for games like Crystal Castles, Tempest, Tron, etc that use the trackball & spinner.   I'm using an xtension control panel, with 2 usb connections, one is for the sticks/buttons & the other is for the trackball/spinner.

The problem is that the trackball & spinner only move the mouse cursor on the screen.  They have no control effect in game.

I'm running Retroarch 1.6.3 and I can see all the possible input configuration options.   I'm not sure what options to change though (paddle analog, track x & Y analog, etc, mouse x & y analog???).   Or perhaps there is something else I need to do?    Default mouse settings are N/A.   Is that the issue?

    Stumped right now....

  8. I understand how to change the emulator to the stand alone & pick the allocation path, but what about the associated platform tab & the dll file?

im playing around with the tab key & individual config for each game now while using retroarch, but The games aren't recognizing my trackball (on say crystal castles) or spinner (on tempest).   All those control do is move the mouse cursor around.  This is my control panel layout, if it helps

I don't mind the difficulties I'm running into, it's just frustrating when you have little background in programming, and you have no idea where to find solutions.

  9. Another dumb question.   There's a lot of games imported that I have zero interest in playing.   Is it easier to delete them from Launchbox (but keep the ROMs in case of needed parent file), or create a custom favorites playlist for each system?

im just curious how you prefer to organize & manage your games list.   No need for 20 Japanese baseball games, etc

  10. Well more pressing use is that my xtension control panel is jacked, and doing some really weird stuff (like fast forwarding game to end of credit when pressing button coded to space Bar?

I need to stop & learn how to configure two joystick inputs/buttons for MAME through retroarch, then apply those general controls to all mame games & adjust each game invididually if needed.   My panel has two 8way/6button setups, a dedicated 4way/2button setup, trackball & spinner/2button setup.

I just need to dial in an overall control config in Mame retroarch, but no idea how to do that.

  11. Well I imported all my mame games (took forever), but now I'm having issues.   I'm sure I set something up wrong or missed a step.

When I try to launch any game from any platform list, I get the error "The file you've specified for the emulator application path was not found"

When I imported into Launchbox, I chose to "use the files in their current location", as I didn't want to duplicate them.   All my split ROMs & CHDs are in their own folder on my D: drive, separated into folders based on each system (mame, atari 2600, etc).

Perhaps I setup the retroarch emulator incorrectly?   Is retroarch looking for the ROMs in the wrong place?

I downloaded "mame_libretro.dll" core in retroarch, and it says the the version (0.188) matches my split ROMs & chd sets (0.188).   I also added an "Arcade" associated platform, and entered ("-L "cores\mame_libretro.dll") as the default command line parameter.  I also checked all the boxes to make retroarch the default emulator.

    What am I missing?

  12. OMG.  Thank you so much for taking the time to explain that in detail!  I would have NEVER figured that out.  Not sure I understood all of that, but I will take the time to learn.

Its on my to-do-list.  Right now I'm setting up my first system (MAME) & getting all that dialed in.  If I have questions I'll reach out to you.  Thanks again!

  13. That's a great feature.  Importing now without the filler & combining ROMs :)

do you prefer prioritizing emumovies content over LB database?   I wasn't use because I have no frame of reference.  Probably personal preference?   Not sure if one better than other, or if priority of content can be changed after games imported.

How it all looks low priority right now.  Just want to get first system dialed in and learn controller setups first.
