CadetStimpy
Why is it huge? Go isn't like chess, in that it's more intuitive. The number of Go configurations of the board exceeds the number of atoms in the Universe, so computers can't possibly 'think ahead' of all the possible moves. Anyway, this video was quite interesting, I thought. This is the first time ever a computer program has defeated a professional human player! CadetStimpy
Whoa! Google's AlphaGo program (for the ancient game of Go) has just won the second match against the reigning World Champion, Lee Se-dol (As of this writing, this game sorta took place in the future - check the time-stamp on the article ). AlphaGo has already skunked the reigning European Champion, 5-0. Can you say, "SkyNet"? (Insert diabolical laugh here). From the Google Research Blog: AlphaGo: Mastering the ancient game of Go with Machine Learning (Lots of other interesting Links in this article). P.S. Apparently, there are a Googol number of moves possible in Go.
CadetStimpy
FWIW, this is the most read story in the Korean Times news.
CadetStimpy
Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo AI program has beaten World Champion, South Korean Go player Lee Se-dol with three consecutive wins in a five-game tournament. This is really something! “I kind of felt powerless,” said Lee after his defeat. AI in Go still has some way to go, according to Lee. “Today’s defeat was Lee Se-dol’s defeat and really was not a defeat of human beings,” the player told reporters at a press conference. He added that AlphaGo was a strong program but not the perfect program at the level of a “so-called divine God.” It made different and sometimes superior moves than human beings but the program also has weaknesses, Lee said.
