CDRDAO Does not seem to recognize drive.....

I am running an MSI Ghost and trying to install Dark Forces from a USB CD drive to my D drive. The C drive is solid state and is only 100 GB.  I can put Launchbox and the CDs there but I have many more GBs on the D drive. Also, would a passport or other portable drive be ok?
