Keep platform background visible during screen transitions?

I'm working on a new minimalist theme, right now on the platform selection page I have a wheel with platform names that changes the background depending on the system.

I'd like to just KEEP the background up, slide the "platform names" wheel away, and have the new "games list wheel" slide back in. Is this possible without the screen cutting to black?
