Where does the default app choice config live for mame roms?

Teenage mutant Ninja turtles has multiple versions. I've selected a different version to be loaded by default. Where does this setting live?

Secondly how is this config handled for merged vs non merged sets where different versions don't exist in different files in merged sets?
