I recently started looking back at Pokémon Emerald and one thing I was thinking about was the starter choice.

Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip all give the game a different feel, especially during the early part of the adventure. I personally think Mudkip is an interesting choice because of its later evolution, but I know a lot of players prefer Torchic or Treecko.

For anyone who has played Emerald, which starter did you choose on your first playthrough, and would you pick the same one again?

I was also reading through some Pokémon Emerald information here:

My first Emerald run was Mudkip, mostly because a Water type felt like the safe pick while I was still learning the routes and gyms. The later evolution ended up carrying a lot of fights for me. If I went back now I'd probably try Treecko just to force a different early-game rhythm, since Mudkip made things pretty comfortable. Torchic seems like the pick for anyone who wants more of a challenge early on. Curious whether people here stick with their original choice or switch it up on replays.

I get the appeal of a safe Water pick while learning the routes, and it makes sense that Mudkip carried a lot of fights for you. Switching to Treecko on a replay is a nice way to change the pacing, though its early moves can feel limited until it gets going. Torchic does seem like the challenge pick, especially against the first gym. I haven't played Emerald myself, but hearing how the choice reshapes the early game makes me curious which one feels most rewarding long-term.

The point about Treecko's early moves feeling limited stands out to me, since that shapes the whole opening stretch more than raw stats do. I like that you framed the choice as changing the rhythm rather than just difficulty. On the long-term question, comfort and reward may pull in opposite directions: Mudkip smooths the path, while a rougher start can make later wins feel earned. I'm curious too whether people who replay tend to chase that rewarding feeling or just pick whoever they liked as a kid.
