  1. Video -

This wasn't an issue before my setup reached 250k- 300k games. After that it slowly but surely became what it is today, a 70-second-or-so-stuttering-fool. I've tried pretty much everything, from using other hardware, changing to a newer video card, changing swap memory size, placing videos and images on an SSD and an NVME drive, moving to smaller drives, moving to larger drives, moving to a RAID setup, creating a brand new build with Windows 10 instead of 11, the list goes on.

    My Specs:

    AMD FX-8320E 8 Core Processor @ 3.2 GHz
    32 GB RAM
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU
Windows 11 (Can dual boot with Win 10 also, same specs, same results)
12 Hard Drives, 7 of which are external USB 3.0 (mixture of HDD, SSD, NVME) *No RAID currently
    525 Platforms
    525 Playlists
    Over 640k titles
    Around 30TB LB/BB all-in data
    Water cooled CPU

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be eternally grateful as this has plagued my build for years... and after all this time I'd love to say this is as I intended it to be.

    * Things I'm completely aware of *
    1. BB/LB likely wasn't built for a collection of this size.
    2. I should have stopped collecting around 400,000 titles ago.
    3. Whining that my collection is so big the program can't do what I want it to is definitely a 1st world problem and I should be thankful I have a roof over my head and food on my table.
    4. I want it ALL, and I want it NOW (Queen, 1989) isn't sexy. My wife told me that. And she wasn't talking about Freddie.
    5. Thinking I know the answer to this doesn't make it so, regardless of how much I pout and complain (I do have a hypothesis, I'm hoping someone can either confirm or deny my suspicions.)

I'm not sure if the video completely shows my frustration. During this demonstration I was consistently clicking the up and down arrows on my keyboard about 6-9 times per second during 75% of the time.

    HELP.

  2. April 2025

This is my current collection, listed for your pleasure. This may help some add to their own collections, or spark some ideas for others. I had some fun trying to come up with new playlists, I hope you find these useful.

Downloads of my .xml files attached.

Let me know if I'm missing something or if the zipped files don't open.

Anything ending with OS = Operating System. FE = Front End.

I think this is the end of my run, it's been a blast. Keep on Gaming!

    Hey everyone, me again.

This will be my last upload for likely a considerable while as I've reached a few personal milestones that I wanted to achieve. I'm scaling back my efforts for the foreseeable future,
I'm happy with what I have... for now.

         Current count - 510 Platforms, 501 Playlists.

I've included all my Data files, excluding my license file.

    Platform and Playlist images included.

Sorry the file is big... :)

I'm missing a few playlist images for some VMWare titles and some newer Arcade 'X' playlists, I'll get around to them. The rest, I think, are there. Let me know if i'm missing anything else, or if you have something better.

    Comments welcome.

Thanks everyone for all your comments and guidance throught the last 5 years, I really appreciate the passion and enthusiasm the community has shown. It has all helped me enormously.

                                                                                                                                 Game on.

  4. July 2022 - 500 Playlists - That'll do Donkey, that'll do.

    View File

500 Playlists, images will follow shortly. Check my main page for details.

I got to 500 with the help of JoeViking245's awesome plugin... If only I'd had this sooner I'd have saved myself a lot of time... :D Check it out below.

As always, let me know if I've missed anything or if there's something wrong.

  5. I like this one, I couldn't wait to share.

This is a playlist for all GEN-X'ers and those who sympathise with the awesomeness we emote. I feel ya. Sorry you're not us.

I've created a cartoons-from-our-childhood-and-maybe-more playlist that I have to say makes me slightly weepy for my youth. ZIP file included here.

Let me know what you think, what I've missed, how to win the lottery.

This may very well be my favorite playlist. I'll upload my whole collection and whatnot later, but for now... this couldn't wait.

Comments / thumbs down / stories about your childhood / winning lottery numbers for all english speaking countries for the next month welcome.

  6. I'm currently uploading everything to BackBlaze with intent to share my entire collection. It'll be over 30 TB and will get bigger as I 'mess around with it' :) Is anyone interested in having this link to download everything I have? Let me know. I'm not sure if i'm willing to go down this road just yet, reaching out for reference to what I want to do. BTW it won't be free, I've spent the best part of 4 years compiling this, but the price won't be extravagant to LB forum members.

Woot!? You must have completely misunderstood me. I wasn't trying to say my set up was better. I just answered your question from the post above where you asked "why not?" (include everything).

It's just a hobby and a forum exists to exchange ideas and experiences. I just wanted to contribute some of my personal experiences and opinions.

There are also benefits of having everything in my opinion, especially if the goal is cataloguing.

I do have to say that I find it rather curious that you feel like this is some kind of competition or that you feel offended if I point out what I personally think is a bit tedious about adding everything there is to a platform, if you want to keep it functional. But if you are not interested in a discussion I will gladly leave you alone.

    👋

I misunderstood the tone of your reply, it's all good! :)

Hmm, I could think of many reasons:
For one, it can get really messy. There are soooo many different versions of certain games and Launchbox does not organize versions very well. If you put everything into the mix, it might be that e.g. in SNES Donkey Kong Country, the "default" rom will be the competition cartridge instead of the newest revision of the rom. In other cases a demo version of a game might become the default rom. When it comes to computer systems, it gets even worse. Mame software list systems for example contain many roms that are NOT games, but programs, many of which won't even load under mame.

By all means, I get the wish to have everything, but what I also want is that when I open Launchbox and click on a game, the game will in fact start and I can play it and I can be sure it IS a playable game in the first place.

I started out same as you throwing everything together. But I soon realized that when I was browsing a platform, there were so many "samples", betas", "demos", "demo disc collections", "prototypes" and in the case of computer systems, "programs", most of them without metadata or artwork, that it just became an ugly and confusing mess and when I clicked on a rom, there was a very high chance that it was not an officially released (version of a) game, wasn't a game at all or that it wouldn't even launch.

That's why I decided (for now) to stick to 1G1R sets for all my platforms and to exclude all roms that are not officially released games, except for unlicensed games. I might add prototypes back in at some point. That way I can be 99% sure that if I click on a game in any given platform, it will indeed launch and be playable.

For computer systems it was a bit more difficult. For one because they are much harder to get working and also because mame software lists are unusable for me, because of all the software that is included. So I decided to use TOSEC sets, which separate games from applications. The problem here is that TOSEC also includes all different file type variations of a game. So one game might be included 5 or more times just with a different file extension, and I have found no way of automatically building a 1G1R set for TOSEC sets (if anyone knows how to do this, please contact me!!! 😄

Long story short: For now I have a very clean collection for all Console and Handheld platforms and a bit of a messy collection of Computer platforms, but even there I can be 90% sure that if I click on a game it will in fact run.

If Launchbox at some point will be able to automatically exclude or flag betas and demos and so on, with the option of "hiding" them when not needed, I might consider rebuilding my collection in a different way. Another option could be making separate platforms for all the "junk", such as: SNES - demos; "SNES - betas", and so on, but this will messy up the platform list some.

"Hmm, I could think of many reasons:

I choose to select which version of a game I want to play each time I choose a new game. If I like it and want to play it again, I add it to 'Favorites'. Sometimes I like playing non-standard versions. That's my choice.

"By all means, I get the wish to have everything, but what I also want is that when I open Launchbox and click on a game, the game will in fact start and I can play it and I can be sure it IS a playable game in the first place." - LOTS of "I"s there. Not everyone is you. I'm not.

"That's why I decided (for now) to stick to 1G1R sets for all my platforms and to exclude all roms that are not officially released games, except for unlicensed games. Also, your choice to stick to a particular set sets your collection apart from mine. Is one better than the other? No. It's all down to what we all individually want our systems to look like.

"Long story short: For now I have a very clean collection for all Console and Handheld platforms and a bit of a messy collection of Computer platforms, but even there I can be 90% sure that if I click on a game it will in fact run." - Awesome!

This isn't a work of art, it's MY COLLECTION. You can choose to like or dislike, but beyond that your opinions are just that. Yours and yours alone.

Ultimately, you came on here and wrote a long story long to say my setup isn't like yours. I'm not sure if it's jealousy or pettiness. Either way, thanks for your opinion! :D
