BigBox crash while sitting idle doing attract mode
JohnnyK replied to MrSco's topic in Troubleshooting
Huh, well this I will certainly use. Being a guy that rarely reboots his computers, not a HUGE fan of rebooting every single night... but its not a dealbreaker. Thank you kind sir! Happy Holidays to you and your family! -
BigBox crash while sitting idle doing attract mode

UPDATE Havent touched it since my last update... Tried to Run MS Pc Man... it DID run it... or at least I got it to the main screen. But it took quite a while to load. I would say a good 30 seconds to bring it up, when normally its only maybe 5 at the most. I can tell its on the edge of running out of memory and headed for a lockup... the best bet is to do a reboot which I will do right after I write this. Once again, it does seem to be handling the issues I have better than the CriticalZone update.. but its not something you can just run forever without any issues. I should note, I do NOT generally have the system hooked up to the internet. I do this so the system does not do anything unless I tell it. Not sure how important that is but I figured I would bring it up. All that said, I would LOVE to hear any ideas on how I could prevent this slowdown (memory leak?) from happening. Is there some way I could replace the Videos with just images? Or just disable videos entirely? Would that help? Happy Holidays all. -

UPDATE I tried again just now... after letting the cabinet run since last time I posted. THE GOOD, is that the cabinet stayed running in the attraction mode. With my previous theme (CriticalZone) it would have crashed by now. THE BAD, is that when I tried to run anything I get a MAME64 error. The error is odd, it just shows the title bar.. but the contents of the error I can not see.. its just totally transparent with a thin black like around what would have been the border. But yeah, at least I didnt have to do a hard reset... I could still go back UNLOCK the attraction mode.. hit REBOOT.. and all is well... but would be cool if I could just come back after a week or however long its been and play the game without having to reboot. Or heck, if I had something that rebooted the system every... I dunno.. 3 nights... that would solve it as well. -

So as an update, I have been running it mostly uninterrupted since I last posted without any issues. I say Mostly uninterupted because I want to have a solid week or 2 without touching it... and I have only maybe had 4 or so days at a time due to holidays and people playing it. HOWEVER, I will say it has not froze or needed a restart. And just a few moments ago I played Mortal Kombat 3 on it after a 3 or so day span of not touching it and it started right up without a hitch. I was originally running the CriticalZoneV2 theme... and then switched to the default theme and its been fine ever since. I will update as time goes on.. but so far so good and I have a feeling this default theme is much more stable than the CriticalZonev2 -

ok, will try those. I was not on either of those... I was using ... CriticalZonev2.. BlueBox If you happen to know that one has issues... we may have found my problem. Anyhow, will test out the ones you recommended. -

Sorry last post here, Which Theme is the most stable, and least intensive to run? Meaning no Video, maybe just images.. or maybe no image previews either.. just name maybe? Please let me know which theme that is and I will give it a try and report back. Just saw your other post so adding this in... Sorry not trying to be negative... but after you recommend a theme to me that is the most stable and most likely to run great... if that doesnt work I may take you up on the refund thing since I would most likely have to switch front ends anyhow. Cheers! -

Also, I wanted to ask... you mentioned you had it running for 1 week. I am not being snarky, but does this mean after the 1 week it crashed? Or you just mean that you stopped the test for other reasons after a week? I ask because I have had Launchbox appear to run for a week.. however the real test is to try to run any game after its been going for that long. Which I have never successfully done. After that long it will either hang up or Mame will just refuse to do anything throwing errors. -

Well it wasnt the exact same, but I get it that it was probably close enough. However the reason I posted it in the other thread is because its ultra annoying, and I was trying to save others from going through what I did in the other thread. If it was all in one thread I would have not created a new one.... I just noticed there were 2 groups talking about the same issue. These people that have had it running for over a week... is there anyone besides YOU that has done this? I would like to hear someone who isnt a Launchbox representative chime in about being able to do this. As I am not sold when the guy that made it makes these claims. Granted not saying your lying.. but... would just like more evidence that there is light at the end of the tunnel before I spend more time with this front end. Anyhow, good luck finding the issue. -

Hello Again, I just wanted to chime in here after quite a while.. and say after updates and trying various things I STILL have this issue. After a few days 1 of 2 things will happen. It will either... 1) Freeze my system 2) appear to be working, but if I try to run ANY game I will get Mame errors and will have to reboot. I am convinced its some sorta memory issue... but not sure. As sad as I am to try this, my next plan is to pick a theme that has no preview videos in Attract mode. OR, just rename the folder so no videos show up. I have a feeling its related to those, but its just a guess. Beyond that, I will just try some other front end, which is unfortunate as I paid to have the full lifetime version of this. -

I would stick to MrSco's issue.. but as a general update mine has been doing pretty good. My only issue seems to be that when I run bigbox for a long time, like a few days or so. And then my kids sit to play a game.. it will lock up about 80% of the time. No error message, no nothing.. it just totally bogs my system down so I have to do a task quit. Which by the way usually takes a few hours as I will hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE.. then select task manager.. and that takes a good few hours. then I kill it... reboot.. and the kids can play. -

Well I did the update, AND removed those files... so it could have been anything. I dont know what the update fixed from .10 to .11 that would have solved my issue. But maybe Jason knows. All I know is the only meaningful thing I did was remove those odd video files, Images and then updated. -

Update that things are still working fine with me since I removed the FLV files and the Images. I know I said I would add the FLV videos back in to test... but no idea when that will be. For one, I kinda dont wanna mess with a system that I have been trying for close to 2 years to get it working like it is now... but also cuz I am just busy. Anyhow, its an easy thing to test for the Launchbox guys I am sure.. just stick a shitload of FLV videos in there and see what happens. But what I can tell you is that MP4 seems to work fine, as I have had it running nonstop since last week (I never shut my machine off) and its been working flawlessly. Cheers! -

Yeah, the FLV videos were removed.. and the images were removed. Just like I mentioned in the previous post... And yeah I am minorly interested myself to see if its the FLV videos. But want to let this run for a few days before I try that. Why? Well I still have a theory that there might be some Corrupt videos in the MP4 collection I am using. And since I have 600 or so games, maybe they just werent picked from the random list last night. So if by Monday it doesnt crash, I will put the FLV videos back in and see what happens. -

Updated!! Videos added back... Fingers crossed! Thanks again for the heads up! I should note... I doubt it matters. But I noticed a few things while copying back my videos into the folder. All of my videos except like 5 were .FLV instead of MP4 ... so I just deleted those I also had a lot of images in there before it seems. I sorta doubt this matters, but I removed them anyhow. So now its just MP4 Videos.. and I can hear it playing in the other side of the office. Real test is if I can make it through the night. Cheers! -

JohnnyK replied to MrSco's topic in Troubleshooting
I am using 11.10 and running the CriticalZone v2 BlueBox Theme. If I remember right I picked it because it was one of the most popular themes so I thought it would be the most ironed out. I have not updated to 11.11 ... I didnt see anything in there regarding any fixes to video playback. And since everything else runs fine I was going to sit it out until others posted positive results. Last thing I want is more shit to go sideways. As for which videos are causing the issue.. I have no idea. I have over 600 games in there and I am never staring at the screen when it happens. I did think about setting up a video camera or something, but thats kind of a pain in the ass. Not to mention I dont know how I would do that exactly. -

Just an update that my crashing is absolutely due to the video playing. Ever since I've removed the videos 4 days ago, there hasn't been 1 crash to desktop. With videos, it never got through the night. Sometimes just an hour before a crash. @Jason Carr Any ideas? -

Yeah I have been trying to use "Restart on Crash" which can be found below: https://w-shadow.com/blog/2009/03/04/restart-on-crash/ But either I am an idiot, or it doesnt like the way that BigBox AND Launchbox has to be running to make it work. I would love to see your script! Btw, on Hyperspin I had the same issue and had to use the HyperRefresh program that would auto shutdown and restart Hyperspin every 10 hours or so. But with my luck the timer would always work out to restart the program in the middle of my kids playing the system.. it was annoying. But if your script just relaunches after a crash.. yeah that would be great! Ofcourse the best scenario is they just fix this... it seems to be pretty clear what the issue is... ofcourse I am not a programmer so what do I know. But yes, even if Launchbox came with a Disclaimer that said "Hey, be warned.. we cant get videos to work" I would still have switched as its much easier to use than hyperspin. However if I find another program that can actually play videos and work without crashing I am TOTALLY READY to spend money for it. I dont care if its $300 I just want someone to make a front end that works. -

Update, last night before bed I removed ALL my video files from the folder... and for the first time since I installed Launchbox my system was not at windows desktop when I came to my machine in the morning. So for ME at least, its definitely the videos.... Things I have done (that havent helped) downloaded the latest codecs (K-lite I think they were called) Used both VLC and Windows to play the videos What I will try next I am going to pick a chunk of 20 or so videos and see if it can play through the night tonight with those being added. I have around 600 games, so I am hoping it will pick the games that have videos and we will see what happens. Possible issues I think it may be One (or more) of my videos is corrupt. So since I have so many, I am going to add them back in chunks and run it for a few nights with each new chunk to see how it goes. This Launchbox program cant play videos... I had the same issue with Hyperspin where there was a memory leak. It was only $70 though so I am not complaining too much. My computer sucks! Specs below.. My system: (ONLY used for the arcade system, nothing except Launchbox installed) Dell Optiplex 9020 MT Intel i7-4790 16GB Ram 500GB HDD Win10 EVGA Gforce 1050 Ti SC Gaming (4GB) -

I am having the same issues with BigBox dumping me to the desktop after running attract mode for a few hours. My system just sits in my office and I wanted to see/hear the videos playing while I work. I am using the CoinOp theme because the default theme was kicking me out. But now I am seeing the CoinOp theme is doing this as well. New test is I just removed ALL the videos to see if that is the issue. I already switched from VLC to Windows player.. and back and forth with no luck. So I wanted to remove the videos entirely to see if it still crashes. -
Welp, update is I picked the CoinOp theme and that seemed to fix things.

Hello, I just purchased the lifetime Launchbox membership, and so far its been pretty awesome. Everything has been pretty damn easy I must say... its a great platform! However, I have had my first issue... Big Box freezes 99% of the time after leaving a game Launchbox Freezes maybe 10% of the time I always exit the game by hitting ESC on my keyboard. It works totally fine in MAME by itself. NEW INFO!!!!!! I have discovered, that when I exit a game in BigBox.. the system locks out EVERYTHING except for MOUSE!! So what I have to do.. is move my mouse, click on another game, or an option of some sort. AND THEN everything (including Joysticks) starts working fine again!! How do I fix this so I dont have to "wake up" the other controls by having to click somewhere with my mouse? MY SYSTEM: Dell OptiPlex 9020 MT Intel i7-4790 3.60GHz 16GB RAM Win 10 Pro GTX 1050 TI SC Gaming (4gb) 4 Player cabinet 4 x Sanwa sticks Players 1 and 2 (4 buttons each) Players 3 and 4 (3 buttons each) Each player has an insert Coin and Player Start button Player 4 has a separate hidden button under the control panel that I use to exit a game. SOFTWARE: Latest Launchbox and Bigbox, downloaded from website yesterday. ONLY MAME system (running latest .230b) (I do have other mame versions in the Emulator folder, but none are being used) Not using RetroArch Things I have Tried: I unchecked using Joysticks in the Options.. and just used keyboard. That doesnt matter. I enter a game fine.. then on exit the keyboard locks up and I have to Alt-Tab to hit the little X to exit. I also turned on the Logs in options/debugging.. but nothing ever shows in the logs folder Disabled Game Startup Screens .
