  1. These came to mind recently, so I'm curious... (1) What would happen if someone pointed the ADV v3.11 download to their ADV 2.0 folder? Would that cut back on the amount that needs downloaded? (2) Just to make sure I have this right. The Win3x Pack will be updated next, then the Win9x Pack, and they will be completely separate. (3) Since I'm not able to use PD, I'll have to rely on another website. Just wondering how practical it would be to post a checksum for each pack. The idea is to make sure none of the files have been tampered with as they get passed around. Thanks... and that includes your efforts, time and patience
  2. I had to give up PD after being banned a couple years ago for the same reason. I had no clue why I was banned at the time but later realized my upload speed was worthless and every hour of downloading on PD required something like 7 hours worth of uploads. Then I made matters worse when I tried to log in several months ago. For some reason I thought my account was gone, tried to setup a new account and now I'm permanently banned. That's when you tell yourself, PD is not for me. I've used the newsgroups for years and never had a problem, but they've since changed. More and more uploads are being encrypted and password protected to the point you can't even tell what's being posted. Search engines which used to search at least the past 3 years, now only search the past year even though the newsgroup retention period is still 3 years (at least for now). I tested that theory by using old NZB files I created 2+ years ago and was still able to download the data. One option is to post the files to the newsgroups. I understand this won't help everyone, but it could help spread the files elsewhere. I would think there are sites that have no interest in PD but would gladly download the files from the newsgroups and post them, either their own website or one belonging to a friend. They'll do that for the sole reason of increasing traffic for more Ad revenue. If that happens 3 times, it means 3 places where they can be downloaded by anyone else for free. As far as uploading the files to the newsgroups, there are ways to lighten the load. Just as a basic example... use RAR to archive Adventure v3.1 into multiple parts... i.e. 30 parts that total 3GB. Get 3 people to post 10 parts each to the newsgroups. You could also use a 4th person to post PAR files. Another option is to contact archive.org in order to suggest another way of getting donations. The way I understand it, their main problem at the moment is a poor download speed. Maybe they could include an option where anyone who contributes a certain amount or higher will also receive a faster download speed... based on a time period or the amount of data being downloaded. Could even assign them a password to access that faster download speed so they could choose when to use it... i.e. for certain files. Hopefully this would only be temporary and still have enough money remaining to continue supporting the site.
  3. I can't believe I didn't even think of THAT!
  4. Yeah, I realized that. Just didn't expect it to be in the very first line of the very first hit on Google. It would be more baffling to just use PD, this way you can't look it up. Well, you can, but you'll mostly get hit's referring to various Police Departments 8-)
  5. I had no idea what Kubla Khan decreed in Xanadu, yet I found the answer in 3 seconds.
  6. Obviously everyone has their own opinion, based on their own experience, even their age, and there is nothing wrong with that. I'm used to the newsgroups and find it to be faster and more reliable than anything else I tried. I very rarely have to download any par files, but at least they're there if needed. Whoever uploads the files has control over the file size which determines the number of parts. Select what you want and it's saved in an NZB (text) file. Run it before you retire for the night. If you don't belong to a newsgroup, most have free trials (i.e. 7-14 days) which is more than enough time...and/or monthly fees. Again, only suggesting as an option.
  7. Just looking at the options. Torrents have their advantages but they take too long. My download speed is fine but it still took much longer to complete than it should have. But my poor upload speed would have taken 7 additional days just to meet my obligation. After one day watching my PC struggle, I had to stop and sent the primary person an apology via email. Archive.org would work fine, but the newsgroups would be better and faster for anyone who uses them, plus retention is 3 years and even longer. That would reduce much of the load from any Torrent as well as Archive.org. BTW, the LaunchBox concept really looks interesting. Looking forward to this eXo. Thanks!
  8. Good news. I was looking around on archive.org yesterday and the issue I previously experienced with download speed has apparently been resolved so all is well there. Great site.
  9. Thanks for replying eXo. I'll send you an email in the next couple days. One thing I'll mention here in case anyone else cares to chime in. I haven't been on archive.org for a couple months, until several days ago and now I can't get any kind of reasonable download speed from them at all. Never had that problem before... did a search and there are other complaints online from people blaming the new website interface. So I accessed the site via the old interface, and it's the same. Mentioning this because when eXoDOS 2.0 gets posted, it will be near impossible to download. Hopefully the problem will get fixed soon. Yeah, the name is a mouthful but Cobra will do just fine.
  10. Always had an interest in dos games... and I'm old so that's a loooong time. I've been looking around for a while now but after reading this thread, two things came to mind. Wondered how I could get in touch with eXo... or hoping he will see this post and contact me... because I have a large collection of dos games from years ago and I may have something that isn't in the eXoDOS collection yet. Also, I'm trying to find eXoDOS v2 without using a torrent. I'm familiar with archive.org but they only have 1.6 and I don't see anything that will update it to the current version.
