  1. The 12.23 "official release" upgrade broke my Launchbox / Bigbox install.

It launched two copies of the installer automatically, and I suspect one messed up the other.   Going to try and reinstall in a minute.  But currently, trying to launch BigBox or Launchbox does absolutely nothing.  It won't even attempt to start.

Fix has been put in for MAME importer that will be in next beta. Currently the issue that was reported with the Next button being disabled happens if there is an error thrown trying to get versions for MAME that we can auto-download. The fix will make it possible to still manually assign MAME as an emulator when that happens. If you're referring to anything else you'll need to be more specific.

    That's the one.   Thank you!

For us mapped drive users, updated and auto ran. Boot up time is still very slow. Runs fine once completely up.

How fast is your network between system running LB/BB and network share?

If its Wifi, I would expect it to be very slow.   I would even expect it to be slow on a 1gb ethernet link.

The media types that are used by all themes in either app are: Box Front (group), Clear Logo (type), Backgrounds (group), Screenshots (group), and Videos (group). Anything else is WILDLY theme dependent or never used at all.

Thats awesome.    But I feel I should have to ask that question on the forums directly to the Dev team... the application should tell me?

Hell, I've probably asked the question before and forgotten.   lol

This will depending on the theme/view you've chosen to use, but the default ones will use the most basic of images: A background or screenshot, a clear logo. Some use a box image, some use a video.

I'm using the default theme / default view.   (semi-required when playing with Beta releases...  lol)

I only had a few minutes to play with it, but I mostly saw just clear logos (large).   Some had a background image (fan art category maybe?  I have no idea), but most didn't.   Didn't see a single video play.   This is probably my biggest gripe about BigBox after all these years of using it.   I am still 100% clueless about what media categories its pulling from without firing up a theme editor and digging around.   Can you put that in the GUI?   (This theme uses the following media categories......  and have it read the actual theme configuration to pull those values out).

Oh here's an idea - show the media categories (dynamically based on currently selected theme / view), and then have an option to flag those in BB "Download this media category next time Launchbox is run"  (For current platform or all platforms)

And even though my cab is 100% keyboard setup (IPac encoder), it was showing "Press (Gamepad) Button" - which...  is sub optimal at best.   I wish it would use button labels instead (Press Select - the function, not the button or key currently assigned to Select - for example).

Also, the after some time in BigBox screensaver move, the Windows screen saver kicked in.   As far as I can recall, BigBox has never allowed the Windows screensaver to activate while in BB attract mode.   But BB screensaver mode appears to allow Windows screensaver mode to activate.  (I just turned off WIndows screensaver to solve that).   Probably an edge case, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

  6. Screensaver feedback -

Just turned it on for fun.   Doesn't seem to use the marquee screen.    That's a bummer.    And I'm not sure what images 'categories' its pulling from, but it seems I'm missing a lot of them.

  7. @faeran

That is one difference between my two cabinets.    Cab #1 forces "Launch With..."  (two options for MAME, one regular, one lightgun focused), while Cab #2 Is just "Launch" (no pop up).

I honestly can't remember why I have a Lightgun specific version of MAME - probably something left over from when I was using SInden guns w/ custom bezel requirements.

  8. Upgraded cabinet #2 to Beta 4 - Games launch just fine on that one in BigBox.  So I re-updated cabinet #1 to Beta 4 - Same problem.  Nothing launches in BigBox.  Which is ultra weird since the two cabinets / two launchbox installs are more-or-less clones.

I ended up rolling them both back to 13.21 release (and my twin driving rig builds).   Going to take a break from betas for awhile I think.

  9. Updated to 13.22 Beta 4 - No emulators will launch in BigBox.   Nothing.  Nadda.

Switching back to Launchbox 13.22 Beta 4 and everything works as it should.  But nothing in BigBox.

Edit - Just rolled back to 13.21 Release, and everything works again.   13.22 Beta 4 is busted.   :)

  10. Android has succeeded because it has a corporate agenda behind it, and a full hardware integration team.   You don't see DIY hardware platform running Android out in masses.  They exist, but they're niche.

My first experience with Linux way back in the day was Slackware.   Tried getting it going, got stuck, asked for help online - and got "f*ck you n00b, go away and figure it out yourself" as a response.  (almost verbatim)  25-30 years later and people are like "why is Windows still so popular.   #facepalm

I realize today's distros are far more welcoming and 'easy' to setup (I still dabble from time to time), but they're still not Windows.

I am wondering what's going to happen with the WIndows 11 hardware mess.  The minimum processor spec (age) and TPM chip arbitrarily retiring old PC hardware sure is an interesting move.  Of the 7 modern desktop PCs I have in my home (5 of them in arcade cabinets), all of them in theory are capable of running WIndows 11, but I've only gotten 4 to upgrade in place.  I haven't spent enough time with the others to figured out what the holdup is (i.e.  too lazy to do a bare metal reinstall on a working system).    I would love to jump to linux on the various Arcade machines, but they've all got specialized 'windows only' hardware / software - so that just ain't going to happen.

  11. According to this site: https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide/  Windows (all flavors combined I guess?) still has s a stranglehold on the market @ 70%.

The US itself has a higher share of Mac OS users, but Windows is still dominate @ 63%:  https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/united-states-of-america

Then go over to Steam Charts - and Windows is the majority leader by a WIDE margin @ 96% (Win11, Win10, and Win7 combined): https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

Valve's own hesitation to release SteamOS to the general desktop PC market in my opinion speaks to just how problematic the platform (Linux in general) is.   If you have 100% control of the hardware, you can do great things like the Steam Deck (And not unlike Mac platforms...).  But once you add in the near unlimited amount of hardware combinations the PC market has (especially the gamer PC market), support probably becomes a horror show and they (Valve) don't want to test those waters.  (and driver support is spotty at best)

The enterprise organization I work for has a large in house development crew, probably 50% of our software stack is home grown.  Lots of open source and linux flavors there.  And we spend A LOT of time chasing the 'new thing' in the open source world.  And we're just working with basically 'generic' VMWare VMs or cloud VMs.  (Or docker-esq containers)   No fancy hardware to speak.  Linux is an extremely strong server platform, and I'm pretty sure most of the WWW is built on it globally today.   But a gaming powerhouse for the masses it is not.  Not for a long while still at least.

Unless someone figures out how to get AI to fix all of its problems, because people sure as hell can't.  That's why Linux has like a thousand distros.  "I don't like the way you did 'x', I'm forking the distro"     sigh.

  12. I'm not sure if this is related to the current beta, or just something that I've never noticed before...   But if you look in the screenshot.   At the 'platform categories' view, for the 'all arcade' selection - it pulls a random video from that list (cool) and a random background image (fan art background I think), but you can see they're two completely different games.

Is it possible to get these to stay in sink?    So it would pull  'random video + random background' from the same game?

The way it works has nothing to do to whether a user uses a specific piece of hardware, but has to do with what your settings are under your controller mappings section of Big Box. For example, looks like you have Button 1 mapped to Select, and you have the Xbox controller input graphics pack (which is the default) selected, and Button 1 on an Xbox controller is the A button, so it shows you the A button image from the pack.

Let's say you are using an arcade cabinet, and your arcade cabinet buttons are named, you can create your own pack that look like your buttons, then when you select it in LaunchBox/Big Box, they would automatically show you the correct buttons in the default theme there, which dynamically change based on your Big Box controller mappings.

Playing with this a little more.

So, if I have controllers disabled should it still show buttons?   Or should it be blank at that point, because there is not mapping?

Are you going to implement something like this for keyboard mapping, that can be used for arcade cabinet controls?    I was looking at your controller theme, and saw the joystick png images - but no idea where you'd actually have them show up in the interface?   (reminded me of the old hyperspin look)

Beta 2 is out with the following changes:

    • New Feature: The Big Box Default theme now dynamically displays Controller Input graphics based on the currently selected media pack

Can you give me an idea of what I should be seeing here?   Did the update, running default theme on both of my cabinets, and I'm not seeing any difference.

Really curious about this one.    Firing up my cabinets to update them...

For for the network file paths?   Is that based on \\UNC\ pathing basically?
