FXAA has the tendency to make things a little too blurry in my opinion. It most assuredly doesn't "completely fix" aliasing. It blurs everything, which makes aliasing slightly less noticeable while making everything blurrier in the process. It's not going to "hurt" anything in the sense that it'll break anything, but I don't think it looks better, personally. Small details, text, that sort of thing, often turns into a blurry mess.

Ha, I hear this a lot in the PC community too. People say it's like smearing Vaseline on the screen... I honestly don't think it's that bad so I guess I will just use it. Unless there is a better alternative. I would take blurry over jaggies.

    Pretty much, yeah.

You can change to Blend bff/Blend tff or Auto (which will use one of the Blend modes) which will eliminate jitter, but will make everything blurrier (even during moments that would have no jitter with a Bob setting). Generally the jitter is only present during non-gameplay moments (like a pause screen or something), if at all, if I'm using one of the Bob modes. Some games have no jitter at all even with a Bob mode. The only games where any of this is relevant is ones that have "Bob tff" or "Bob bff" listed under "Interlacing" on the spreadsheet. Anything else is going to either be one of the Blend modes or Auto which will either be Blend or none.

Fair enough, I sort of assumed that would be the case.

  2. Hi @Zombeaver hope you are well?

I have finally got everything working after some issues, Such an awesome thing to just click one button and have the game configured perfectly! Great job.

I had a question on your choice of config for Yakuza.

The aliasing is quite awful on this game, for example his gun at the start is literally just a jagged mess.

Just wondering why you haven't selected FXAA?

I turned it on and it seemed to fix it completely with no noticeable performance impact.

This isn't a criticism, just wondering if it maybe impacts games in other ways I haven't seen yet?

Also with the games that you have turned interlacing on, is that the only way to fix the horrible bobbing (example of this is Onimusha: Warlords) as I really don't like the look of interlacing, but the bobbing is sort of worse so I assume this is a compromise we have to make?

    Many thanks,

@WuTangDan That is easily possible and can be achieved in a couple of ways. The most straight forward is perhaps just renaming your memory card to mcd02.ps2, then your memcard will be installed slot 2 for all games and you can copy over whatever save you want to slot one by using configure to open PCSX2 and then choosing to launch without a disc. You can also use an external tool called mymc, or if it's just one game just rename your memory card to that game. Hope that made sense.

Will try this tonight, thank you.

  4. That worked :) Thanks.

I had a saved game for the game I have just configured using Zombeavers configs, is there a way to retrieve that?

I had to completely reinstall PCSX2 and your plugin to get it working again, but i backed up the memory cards and pasted them back into the memory card folder in PCSX2.

I know this is slightly off topic, but just wondering if you know?

  5. Hi, really odd issue I am having.

I finally got this to work, but the box that says 'do you want to download the config' is tiny, and wherever I click (yes, no or the X to close) it just doesn't respond. I have to close it by right clicking in the taskbar and closing..

Any ideas? I am on a 4K TV.

I'll be honest, I have not played with the shaders at all so maybe I need to experiment with those to get the sort of look I want. I just found that when you increase the resolution you kind of get this instant 'clean' look and it gets rid of most of the aliasing and shimmering you get with old PS1 era games. Because I am playing on a large 43" screen, it really shows the age of these games unfortunately.

  7. Each to their own. You can easily get away with much lower specs, but I am a bit picky when it comes to frame-rates and graphics and really don't like to compromise!

    It's an expensive obsession :(

I have been watching videos on the new Ryzen 2200G APU and they can run everything for like £90. Really cool bit of kit.

The funny thing is, I don't game that much either due to being at work 12 hours a day Monday-Friday, yet I have a £3000 Gaming PC, PS4 Pro, Rasperry Pi 3 AND my new Emu Machine that I built haha.

  8. And that is exactly what they are used for!

I have a main PC but wanted to build a dedicated Emu machine for Big Box :D Got the parts from eBay and built it from scratch as a fun little project. Already had the CPU, RAM and Mobo so it was quite easy.

The only emulator i can see it struggling with is Cemu for Zelda Botw, but i play that on my i7 7700k/GTX 1080 so that doesn't bother me.

  9. Hi All,

Was wondering if anyone could recommend the 'best' settings to use in RetroArch for PS1 games. I am using the Beetle PSX HW core and I was hoping that it might be possible to get some advice on which settings are safe to tinker with?

I do appreciate that different games may react differently to certain settings, but I am just looking for the options that are okay to change for all or most games?

I have played with a few settings and although on some games they worked great and made the game look amazing, other games really didn't like them and caused crashes or visual glitches.

    System Specs are below to assist with any suggestions you might have;

    CPU : i5 3570k @ 3.5 Ghz

    GPU: NVIDIA GTX 770

    RAM: 16GB DDR3

    Any help is much appreciated.

N.B: These are my emu machine specs, so please don't laugh :P I have a main PC with much better specs, I promise!

  10. Awesome. That's what I was hoping, just got lost in the jargon and a bit confused.

I already have the core set up, so it should just be a case of grabbing the configs for me I hope :)

My screen is 4K not 1080p though, so I am assuming this will not look as intended for me?

Will I need to edit all of the files individually to work with my screen?

  11. I was reading through this as I really want to give all of my PS1 library some love. I have been tinkering with settings but I have nowhere near enough time to go through each and every game and configure it to work perfectly unfortunately, full time work plus four hours of commuting a day takes away from my spare time! :(

I sort of get what you are saying and it all sounds good, but what I couldn't understand fully is how I actually get these game configs to work.

Sorry if that's a dumb question, but I got a little lost in the technical talk in the OP, and I was wondering if I could have an 'explanation for dummies' on how I actually get this working, if that is possible to do? If it's not then I understand.

Is it just a case of downloading the configs you have made and putting them somewhere in RA, or is there more manual intervention than that required?

Also, is this purely just for the Aspect Ratio and additional shader for some games, or does it also tweak any other core options on a per game basis like resolution, filtering etc to make the games run better?

Again, thanks for all your help.

  12. I haven't tried these yet, I am currently on the stable build and it works as far as I can tell. I haven't really had any of the issues described in the OP.

This all sounds really good though, I just wondered if it is really as simple as updating to the latest PCSX2 version, downloading the config tool and then pressing a button within it, and that automatically set it to the optimal settings?? Sounds almost too good to be true!

I just want to make sure I know what I am getting myself in to before I do it, as I am a bit of a noob and everything works for me as it is currently, so I don't want to break it!

Any reassurance someone could give me about making the jump would be great, as I plan on expanding my PS2 library soon and I assume that will mean I am more likely to come across issues, currently only have about 10 games! :)

Thanks for any help you can give me, and also thanks for all your hard work Zombeaver!

  13. If you wanna set up CEMU then just watch BSOD Gaming on YouTube.

He has easily the best guides around, and makes shaders and graphics packs you can download in his video description.

He just did a video on Zelda Botw running at 8K! Pretty awesome.

  14. Just wanted to mention something regarding scraping or 'downloading media and metadata' for the MAME ROM pack.

I downloaded all metadata and media for the entire 'Arcade', category which is over 2000 ROMs, and I was left with about 50% of games missing any type of media (no screenshots, game covers, videos etc.) This was even after leaving it for a few hours to let the image cache catch up.

However, I tried the download a second time the next day using the 'only update files missing media' option, and to my surprise nearly all of that 50% of missing media has now been downloaded!

I am sure this is probably common knowledge in the community, but as a noob trying to help fellow noobs I thought it might be useful to post my findings here just in case it helps someone else.

You can also sometimes find the media by editing an individual game using the edit option, and then searching the game title on google. I have found a few cases where ROM files were named incorrectly by missing a letter or something like that, so you can copy and paste the exact name from wikipedia and then try to download media again and it should find it.

So if you find yourself missing loads of media after the first attempt, give this a try!

    Damn, that really is EVERYTHING.

The intention of my build was to be able to play all of the emulators that the Pi can't (PS2, DC, GC etc) but now I think I will move everything over to LaunchBox :P

    Such a great tool.

  16. It's already awesome tbh, my build is really coming along great.

I have Gamecube, N64, Dreamcast, PS1 and PS2 plus all of the Arcade games already up and running and looking awesome in Big Box.

And I am pretty sure they are the hardest emulators to get working consistently. Now I need to add the SNES, Megadrive etc and I will literally own all the games ever *evil laugh*

    Gonna be great.
