You don't ever update MAME without updating your ROM set as well. Your MAME rom set and MAME emulator need to be the same version number to work properly

I know this is an old post but It would be helpful to sort or create a playlist (or audit) of games by emulator.  Is this possible? I run multiple versions of mame with the associated rom set in launchbox/bigbox.  This is due to some games having issues with newer versions of mame.

  2. Couple things you can try:

    1. I have found some bigbox themes (refried) caused issues with emulator frame drops so going back to the default theme fixed that.

    2. I also have had issues with windows power plans when not running in high performance mode can causes issues with emulators and slowdowns. The CPU was being throttled by windows causing frame drops.

    thx twobucks,
Actually my marquee monitor in windows are positioned on top of my main screen, if i remember correctly ive tryied to put 2nd monitor as in yout pics with no result but ill give another try.

My two screen run different resolution, main is 1920*1080 and 2nd is 2560*1080 [21:9].
The strange fact is that Retroarch alone (without LB or RL) don't kill anything on the second screen but when launched with LB it give this problem.

    EDIT:
Just tryied with no luck but i discover a thing.
The marquee don't disappear or load a worng/black marquee as i was thinking, it simply minimize in the tray but i wasn't able to reopen t manually.
I never notice because i run BB without the explorer.ex process.

I too am running the same resolutions.  My primary monitor is running 1920x1080 (1) and my marquee monitor is running 2560x1080 (2).

The reason I run in this orientation is due to the exact problem you were having with some emulators.  Windows is really not good at managing multiple open windows on multi monitors the way we need them for dedicated marquee monitors in Bigbox. When my primary monitor is on the right hand side, changes to refresh rate or resolution would not affect the marquee monitor. When my primary monitor was on the left side, changes in resolution, refresh rate, or sometimes switching to exclusive fullscreen mode could effect the marquee monitor by minimizing it or chopping off the window. I am running explorer.exe on my bigbox setup so i don't know if this would have an effect.

video card drivers and how you have them setup i am guessing can also play a part. for my setup I am running a fairly recent version of the radeon drivers with my RX-580

  4. I had this problem long ago and the only thing that fixed the issue was positioning my primary screen in windows to the right of my marquee screen. For some this solution works and for others it does not. if the resolution of your marquee is drastically different from you main monitor then this may not help. You can give it a shot

it should look like this in windows display propertiesdisplays.thumb.PNG.6600cb9c81c122dcc5f9d5016b33f831.PNG

    Hi

I found a bug with the integration with Ledblinky.... If I start the mame game from the platform list, everything working with ledblinky, controls.ini and colors.ini are processed correctly.  If I start the game from the recent game list of the platform (the shortcut without accessing the full platform list), the ledblinky integration does not work. The last game that was selected within the list is the actual game that ledblinky speech/animate....

Exemple: I start a mame game from the platform list, say World Class Bowling, everything is fine with ledblinky..... after I start Pac-Man from the recent items, the speech and light are still the one from World Class Bowling.... it should be Pac-Man....

I have seen this same problem using LEDBLINKY and Bigbox version 12.6.  As a workaround I had to disable recently played games in bigbox to stop it from happening.  People using my arcade machine would easily gravitate to clicking on recently played games and the wrong controls would light.

ahh ok, that's a good little trick to know. i'm curious though I thought the dmddevice.ini was just for separate backglass, not for dmd over the top on a single screen like i'm doing...but maybe i was mistaken about that.

Just out of curiosity do you have "force fullscreen exclusive mode" checked in VPX graphic settings? If so, try turning off directdraw for each of the table roms.  This fixed the DMD not showing on top im my case.

You can change this option in the registry for each rom at HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software - Freeware - VisualPinMame - "ROMNAME"

Find the ddraw option for each rom and set it from 1 to 0.

Then try running the table a couple times and see if that fixes the problem.

I am running exclusive fullscreen mode with directdraw off for all my pinmame roms and launchbox/bigbox startup screens turned off. In my case I get the best table performance in fullscreen exclusive mode and all my tables work properly.

  7. If you don't change the monitor number I don't believe anything will change in bigbox.  try clicking on the monitor in the windows display properties and just drag it to the right of the marquee screen. Make sure sure the alignment stays the same.

I believe they just added a new feature in launchbox 12.7 for custom cut marquee screens if that is what you have.

If it does not work then just drag it back.

I my case i am using an ultrawide monitor for my marquee monitor so positioning of the marquee monitor has never been an issue.

  8. Back in october of last year i updated to windows 10 20H2 and recently started noticing some visual pinball (VPX) tables suffering performance problems that never had performance problem in the past. Anyways after a few days of updating all my drivers and making sure no third party applications were causing this performance issue, i stumbled upon an article about a windows security update that was causing gaming performance issues.

    https://www.windowslatest.com/2021/07/22/windows-10-update-fails-to-patch-performance-issues-but-another-fix-is-coming/

Anyways after making sure game mode in windows 10 was turned off i adjusted my windows 10 powerplan and changed the mininum processor state from 5% to 100%.  After making this change the stuttering in VPX was gone. You can also just set your power plan to high performance which will do the same thing.

    PC specs:

    I7 9700K

    32 GB ram

    AMD RX580

I really don't want to run my PC on high performance mode all the time but will if needed.  Maybe upgrading to the newer 21H2 will help. Has anyone else had this problem especially with the same version of windows or newer?

I actually fixed the issue somehow. I did select 144hz in the bigbox settings originally, restarted and all but it stayed choppy. I tried it again yesterday and it's really smooth now. Only thing I remember doing differently is turning off HDR in windows.

The refresh rate that i am running on my panel is not an option in bigbox.  My desktop is running at 90Hz so that freesync stays within the range my monitor needs.

So update, still couldnt fix this, but what is interesting is windows games dont have this isue. Just steam. So im not sure if its how big box is comunicating with steam or what. Retroarch, mame and everything else is working fine as well. But like i said in launchbox steam games stay lit just fine

So i tried setting up a game from my steam account using the import steam games and neither launchbox or bigbox would light any controls after importing the game.  The issue seems to be the application path for launching the game, See screenshot below

    1851509411_steaminportedgame.thumb.PNG.2a76ae09b49e4bcd909dc21f9b5f1105.PNG

When the application path for a steam game uses "steam://rungameid/XXXXX" I cannot get any contols to light. Using launchbox 12.6 my Front end controls end up staying lit the whole time

If you want to fix it on a per game basis you can try changing the application path to launch the Game EXE directly which may work for some games or may not.  If it does not work running the game exe directly you can try making an AHK script as detailed in this post

In my experience using the game EXE or an AHK scirpt for steam games has been the most reliable way of getting controls to light and stay lit during gameplay using LEDBLINKY in launchbox and bigbox.

Hopefully in the future maybe the launchbox devs will add the ability to monitor for a specific game EXE on a per game basis, so controls will lite reliably for PC games.

  11. I have windows 10 and all my windows based games are lighting up the controls properly.  I am not sure if ledblinky officially supports windows 11 yet.

For all my steam games i usually use an AHK script to start the game since most games have a launcher before the actual game starts, which causes controls to turn off shortly after the game starts. what is strange is that this works in launchbox but not in bigbox. Did you add these games using the import steam games or by using an AHK script of some kind?

  12. I wanted to give an update that I found a minor bug in bigbox 12.6 when using LEDBLINKY.  Everything works fine when selecting a game from list view, but when selecting a game from the "platform" or "platform category" LEDBLINKY will not light controls for the correct game or not at all. This problem happens and is repeatable when using the default bigbox view and you select a "recent game" or "favorite game" from the platform or platform category.

  13. I am getting these errors in windows event viewer every time I run bigbox.  Not sure if this has anything to do with the stuttering issues I am experiencing with ledblinky.  Thanks

The I/O error is LEDBlinky trying to write a stream of messages to the log. Try turning off the Debug Log option and see if that helps.

I did have debug log option off already and I also turned off "Display errors on FE Quit".  I still get the IO error when using bigbox with both options turned off.  What I am noticing is the stuttering of the games list and ledblinky errors are happening using the game list view that uses plain text for game names in the default theme.  If I change the view to clear logos or box fronts for the games list, the problem with stuttering and errors seems way less frequent. Thanks

Ah. In BB settings go to the Images section and then check what you have "CoverFlow Image Quality" set to. The new xaml uses coverflow for the images so that setting might be affecting the image. You will want it set to High or Highest.

That worked,  changing image quality to highest and refreshing the coverflow images fixed the image quality issue for the marquee images.  hopefully coverflow images and marquee image quality settings can be seperated at some point in the future to allow flexiblility for performance tweaking.

None of the changes made would have affected image quality. There were improvements to video support as well as updating the default marquee view xaml to support fallback options.

Can you post an image of what you are seeing. Also are you using a theme that may have a custom marquee view? Do you see this on all themes you try?

I have attached two pictures using my phone, hopefully the image doesn't get resized.  The first picture is using Bigbox marquee screen and the second is just the file open in windows.  If you look at the text in the image you can see the difference and blurryness.  I am just using the default theme.  The marquee image has a resolution of 7000x3150 which exceeds the resolution of the monitor.  I am using a LG 26" ultrawide for my marquee monitor set to the naitive resolution of 2560x1080.1968029200_imageopeninbigbox.thumb.jpg.1a7416ac605be54c70dda095707bf639.jpg

  17. After upgrading from bigbox version 11.9 to 12.1 I have noticed the quality of the marquee images being displayed on my 2nd marquee monitor is blurry compared to the previous version of bigbox. When viewing the image by itself outside of bigbox everything looks clear and text is easy to read but when viewing it from the marquee screen in bigbox, text looks blurry. Are there new quality setting options for marquee images in bigbox version 12.1?
