l.strain
Now That I have Star wars : Dark Forces installed via the iso process is it possible to get this graphics engine working too??? thanks
Jason Carr
Hmm, interesting. Having some trouble getting it running. I downloaded the latest package here: http://xlengine.com/downloads/ I downloaded the "XL Engine Release R2" and extracted it. Then when I ran it, it told me I was missing OpenAL32.dll. So then I went and downloaded the OpenAL setup from here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/nwt3ilty2mo/oalinst.exe Then I was able to run XLengine_Launcher.exe from the package and it worked properly (was able to see the interface). Clicked on Dark Forces, and then pointed the Game Data Folder to my Dark Forces install directory. Unfortunately though when I click Play the application crashes. I'm running Windows 8.1. Maybe you can try that and see if it works for you. The error it gives me is an access violation, which could be 10,000 different things, unfortunately. The site does say it's an alpha release, so it's still very much in development. Let me know if you get it running though.
Jason Carr
Ha, well no kidding. I was able to get it working by right-clicking on XLengine_Launcher.exe and selecting Run as administrator. Let me know if that works for you.
l.strain
im on windows 7 i had it working with a normal install but when its installed the way you showed us in the video tutorial it no longer works through the graphics engine! its no big deal as i like the ability to use the controller! l.strain
i meant to say if you just mount the iso manually then point the graphics engine to it then it works fine!
Jason Carr
So you point the graphics engine to the CD files? If that's all you do then you can probably just copy the files off the CD to your hard drive somewhere. Then you can just uncheck Use DOSBox in the LaunchBox game settings and point the Application Path to the XLengine_Launcher.exe file. That should work I think. l.strain
will i still be able to use the controller though?
Jason Carr
Ah, doesn't look like it. It doesn't look like that engine has any controller support. You could try using a gamepad to keyboard converter of some sort, though I've never really tried. You could try using something like XPadder: http://www.xpadder.com/. l.strain
Sorry meant to say on the other page that when you use the controller on dark forces is it possible to use the other analogue stick to look up & down etc?
Jason Carr
Well, looking at the settings, it looks like Dark Forces only supports the X axis and the Y axis. The right analogue stick uses additional axes so unfortunately the only way you could make it work is with a mapper program like XPadder. Art In Pinkerton
Just a side note: XLengine is still being developed. But it is now a core engine to support multiple games. The author has been focusing on the Daggerfall functionality for the last year. He disappears from time to time but always returns. Let just call it a slow burn project.
