bigbox not recognising A/X key

Suddenly, Bigbox is no longer recognising the A/X key on 360 / PS4 controllers.  I have deleted the BigBoxSettings.xml with no effect.  This means I cannot enter the settings menu to rebind the keys!  It's weird.  Anyone had this problem before?  Everything working fine in Launchbox, so I know the controllers are not at fault.
