Should I use XBox 360 xinput for MAME & Steam games?

So I play both MAME and Steam games on Big Box. I'm using Ultimarc Ultimate I/O encoder. 

I have to hold down two buttons to switch from keyboard emulation to controller emulation. It's a pain switching. 

Can I navigate Big Box and play all my MAME games in controller mode? That would eliminate the need to switch back and forth? 

If so how do I do that. I already check the recognize controller option and that doesn't work.

Of course, you just need to set them in MAME and in controller mappings section in Bigbox. Xinput is the standard these days, pretty much everything on PC supports it.
