To unzip the entire PSX collection...or not?

Hello!

I've been playing with LaunchBox for a few weeks now. I'm thoroughly convinced this is the front end for me already!

I've been adding my games in by platform, more or less from oldest gen to newest. I reached PS1 this weekend, and suddenly I've reached a bit of a dilemma...

Up 'til this point, I've left "Extract ROM archives before running" unchecked.

My PS1 collection is all in zip. I imported the whole collection as zip files, tried to launch a game (using the Beetle PSX HW core in Retroarch), and it doesn't work.

I re-imported a handful of games unzipped, and it worked. So I've seemingly learned that the Beetle HW core in Retroarch won't launch from zip...got it.

So then I went back and ticked the "Extract ROM archives before running" box and tried again on the zipped games. It works...although I noticed that most games I tested that have more than 1-2 bin files in the zip yield a "7-zip returned an error while trying to extract the archive" prior to the game launching. Furthermore, when I go back and launch some of the previously working games on other platforms (NES, Genesis, etc), they no longer launch with that "Extract ROM archives before running" box checked. That checkbox seemingly impacts ALL instances of Retroarch regardless of platform (and the majority of my platforms are currently running through Retroarch), so leaving that box checked appears to not be a viable solution anyways.

So that brings me to the last, most dreaded solution....extracting ALL of my PS1 zip files. I'd decided that I wouldn't be overly bothered about losing the HD space savings of having them in zips already. However, you can imagine the further frustration when I came to realize that if I clear out the PS1 games I've imported and go back to import now-extracted games (just a handful of them at this point), LaunchBox is going to basically import a game entry for EVERY bin that was in each zip. Those bin files are tracks from the original PS1 disc, and some of these games have 30+ bins (or tracks).

So the ultimate question...am I going to have to extract every one of my PS1 games, reimport them, then spend a weekend deleting all of the duplicate game entries caused by the additional "tracks" for each game in order to get this working right?

Sorry for being long-winded. If you made it through all that, I thank you. Surely someone else has or will have this question again :)

You only need to import the .cue files to launchbox, no other files are required as the .cue provides the emulator with the .bin names.

You could also convert your PS1 games to CHD if you are going to be using Retroarch for them. CHD is a compressed format so will actually save you space, and they are loaded "as is" to the emulator, so no actual decompression is required before loading them, so best of both worlds.

Thanks for the response!  I've read a bit about the option of converting to CHD prior to posting. I haven't yet looked into HOW to do that, but it's an option in the back of my mind...

I would LOVE to be able to only import the cue files, but how exactly would I do that? If I extract all of these zips, there's a folder with the game name containing several bins and a cue. When I point LaunchBox to the main folder holding all the game folders, it scans and picks up all of the bins as well as the cues. I'm not seeing a way to have it import only the cue files...

After extracting all the roms just go to your Playstation folder and in the windows explorer search bar put *.cue, this will list all the .cue's for your games in that folder. Select them all by clicking on one then CTRL A to highlight them all, and drag and drop those onto Launchbox to start the import wizard for those files.
