LanGun
I am trying to determine what the best display option for a home arcade cabinet build. What are your thoughts?
LanGun
Sorry I didn't catch that, what display would you guys recommend for a 2 player full size standing cabinet emulating up to PS1 (so probably 4:3)? If this has been covered in another thread I apologize, kindly link me over there and I will quit asking about it.
Lordmonkus
I would just suggest a nice 1440p or 4K OLED gaming monitor unless you have some way of using a CRT but that is a pain in the ass on modern hardware. A 4:3 LCD display is not going to be good. They are old, high latency and bad motion blur.
LanGun
Gotcha so I should stop the search for CRT then (It has been a pain the rear). So we are looking for something 75Hz, 32" ? Why do you recommend 4k? I should only be emulating PS1 and earlier. something like this? https://www.amazon.com/LG-Computer-32UP83A-W-Compatibility-FreeSync/dp/B07PDHSVSW/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=monitor%2B32"&qid=1707072318&s=pc&sr=1-3&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&th=1 Edited February 4 by LanGun
Lordmonkus
19 minutes ago, LanGun said: Why do you recommend 4k? The main reason is the vertical resolution on 1440p and 2160p are perfect integer scales of 240p so the pixel aspect ratio will be correct without any black borders at the top and bottom when using integer scaling in the emulator like Retroarch. With 1080p 240p does not scale perfectly, it's a 4.5x scale so you either end up with stretched pixels or black borders at the top and bottom when using integer scaling. The monitor you linked would do the job to play the games perfectly fine and the price is good. But if cost isn't too much of an issue and you want "the best" solution I would suggest something that does 120hz and OLED. OLED is going to give you the blacks and contrast that comes close to CRTs, especially if you enable black frame insertion which you need at least 120hz or 240hz (multiples of 60). OLEDs do jack up the price point though.
