Alphabetical playlists?

I´d like to sort my games alphabetical. So I´like to create a playlist A, a playlist B and so on. But how do I auto-populate these lists? Is there a wildcard option for game titles?
At least the typical wildcards like *, ? or % don´t work.

I would

1. Create a custom field 'First Letter' 

2. Sort all your games by alphabetic order

3.Manually select all games starting with 'A'

4. Mass edit the custom field to have the value 'A'

5. Repeat for every letter

And create your playlist from there. Or even make a python script to create the custom field automatically if that's something you're confortable with
