Launchbox keeps corrupting

Recommended Posts

I helped a friend with a MAME arcade cabinet PC. I’ve set up about 10 PCs with launchbox/Bigbox. I always use the same PC too. For some reason his has had this launchbox corrupted error twice in just a few weeks of use. Any idea what’s causing this? I’ve attached a photo but it’s running a CRT so it’s difficult to read.

As it states, the xml file is corrupted and missing the root element.

As it's happened twice (so far?) on only one of your 10 PCs, my guess is that LaunchBox is not being shut down properly.  That, or it's being closed properly but the computer is being powered off right away or if on a portable drive, being unplugged right away.

a.k.a. LaunchBox closes [visually] but it's not being given time to write/save to the xml(s) in the background.

Maybe that’s it. I usually just press an external button located in the coin door to shut down my PCs but never close launchbox first. I assume windows is closing it when I press the shut down button. I set him up with this button but he may just be killing the power without shutting down.

I noticed it says use the back up file. I tried that before but it didn’t fix it. Should I just find the backup xml file and paste it in? Or do I need to go through set up all over again?

Couldn't see which file it was.

  1. If you can find an old enough backup that's not too old and is a valid xml file, use it.
  2. (or) with LaunchBox not running [and properly, completely shut down] delete that file and start LaunchBox. It'll recreate it. You may need to make some adjustments to get back to where you want it.
