BigBox often quits as soon as I hit the joystick

New arcade setup, my very first.  I believe I have all of the buttons/sticks/wiring installed correctly, but when I launch bigbox, it will often just straight up quit as soon as i hit the joystick in one direction. 

not sure what to do here to even start troubleshooting, as i thought it would be fairly plug and play.

so far ive narrowed it down to the 1p joystick.  every time i press the joystick right in the BB menu it quits on me

Check in Controller Mappings.  System Menu < Options < Controller Mappings (or Keyboard Mappings if your encoder is set to keyboard mode).

Check what's mapped to "Exit". "Exit" closes Big Box.  Clear it (best option) or change it to something else.  Hopefully that helps,

Yes I realized I had quit mapped as “right” somehow. Now it works properly. 
 

my next question: I can’t seem to get my trackball working in golden tee. I’ve set trackball as “mouse” in Mame, and I know it works bc it works in Win11 as a mouse. But for whether reason I can’t get it to work in game. 
 

any ideas?
