Hey guys! I can't seem to figure out how to change the controller overlay on the Android version of Launchbox. Can someone give me some guidance? I would like to set it up with an X-Box controller type layout or similar. No matter what I try it doesn't change from the standard D Pad layout. Thanks!

The controller overlay isn’t controlled by LaunchBox - it comes from the emulator being launched. You’ll need to change it in that emulator’s settings.

If you’re using RetroArch, open RetroArch directly and go to Settings > On-Screen Display > On-Screen Overlay > Overlay Preset, then select your preferred layout. You may need to update/download the overlay pack first and save a core or game override afterward.

If you’re using a different emulator, let us know which one and we can provide the exact steps.

So, that was helpful and I was able to figure out how to select a different overlay. However, every time I do a core override or a configuration override or any sort of save it doesn't save it so is there something I could be doing wrong there?

RetroArch saves global and per-core settings differently:

  • For a global overlay, open RetroArch directly, select the overlay, then use Main Menu > Configuration File > Save Current Configuration and exit through Main Menu > Quit.
  • For a core-specific overlay, launch a game first, select the overlay from the Quick Menu, then choose Quick Menu > Overrides > Save Core Overrides.

Also ensure Settings > Configuration > Load Override Files Automatically is enabled. RetroArch should display the path where the override was saved. If it reports an error, check that Settings > Directory > Config points to a writable location. RetroArch’s overlay guide covers the same process.

If you’re using the LaunchBox beta with Log into RetroAchievements on game launch enabled, there was also a bug where LaunchBox’s generated RetroArch configuration could prevent existing settings from loading correctly. That has been fixed for the next build; disabling that option temporarily should work around it.

Thank you very much for you help. As it turns out the specific overlay that I was trying to save seems to have been the problem. I tried saving different ones and they worked and then I tried that one again and it didn't work. I ended up downloading an overlay that was was made by someone in another forum that I found to be perfect. So I'm all set for now. Thanks again!
