  1. I am looking for the easiest way to remap the default controls for Retroarch. I like using it a lot but 9 times out of 10 the control buttons are in the wrong place and the videos I'm finding are really old or don't seem to work. I am alps not finding much information about editing cores and such. I just don't know the keyboard shortcuts, etc. This too would be very useful so I can do things like add the Sega Master System bios and remove FM sound.

I've been trying to find a solution to this myself lately, No ones ever going to play a full set of 200,000 games over 400 systems.

I liked the idea of maybe the top 100 games for each system I'm interested in, I started googling "top 100 arcade games", "top 100 nes games" etc and was presented with several lists. I copied these lists in to txt files which I've attached to this post.

I planned to go through and remove duplicates, any junk games, incompatible games and convert the lists over to rom name so I could use scripts to copy them to the right places, as usual time is thin and it's been put on the backburner for another day. But the raw lists are here if anyone's interested :)

Very nice. Thanks for working on this.

  3. Many, if not most CHD games are non working so it is a complete waste of bandwidth and disk space to download a full CHD set. I found one possible way to solve this problem was to download the latest version of Arcade 64, select CHD's in the left menu and it will tell you if a particular game is working or not. Or if it is, whether it is working with problems. From there you can simply Google the name of each working game and watch a few seconds of gameplay or images to decide if it's worth a try or not. If you find a full CHD set in torrent form, simply select the files you want and skip the rest before starting download.

According to Arcade64, here is a list of working CHD's for MAME 0.209 minus a rhythm or puzzle game or two. It's about 110G:

Note: Some members of the forum have tested these with mixed results, and others have found working games not in the list.

  4. Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. So far everything is running great. I did have one small request and that is when a game has multiple versions and you can choose the version you want by right clicking the game and selecting it (like the way multiple disks are handled), is there a way to select which version is the default? For example, Maximum Force when the game is left clicked the no gore version starts. In order to select the regular version I have to right click and select a different version. If there is a way to change the order it would be ideal.

  5. Okay, thanks. That's exactly where I'm at. Grabbing 0.207 CHD's to go with my non merged 0.209 romset. Then I'll be slashing and burning. Would your All Killer bat work with this new non merged version of MAME by any chance?

  6. There seems to be little information on the proper handling of CHD's for MAME regarding maintaining and updating. I have never been really big on CHD's due to most being non working but there have been improvements to the point I want to expand my collection of them. My CHD's are a bit dated version wise and I would like to know the following:

    1) How do we update our CHD's to match the version of MAME that we have? While full MAME sets are readily available, CHD's are not and are often many versions behind current MAME. At best, the most current CHD's available are a few versions behind current. Do we have to rollback a few versions in order to use them?

    2) Can we use "merged" CHD's with a split or non merged MAME romset? Or does MAME set type have to match CHD set type exactly?

I would just like to learn the proper way to keep CHD's running smoothly like the rest of MAME roms. At least the ones that work. I use Arcade 64 to see if CHD's are reported non working or not.

    Appreciate any wisdom on this.

  7. I'm late to the party, but would like to say that I agree with Zombeaver and Lordmonkus. What a condescending jerk. The emulation community is the very reason our collections exist, how we have beautiful frontends, moderators that answer the same questions over and over for the sake of helping others, and gigantic databases of every conceivable cart, CD, and coin op worldwide. I gladly pay the few bucks for all this hard work.

  8. I wanted to know if there is a way to grab large groups of roms. The usual right mouse hold, select a large group, unpress and delete doesn't seem to work in Launchbox. For example, in my MAME set I might want to quickly delete all terminal roms, a foreign region I don't need, etc. The only quick select I know of within Launchbox is Ctrl+A which deletes your entire collection. I have been having to Ctrl+click one by one which is a really pain in the butt when the group your deleting is really large. I selected all the right filters upon import and there's still a lot of junk. Unfortunately, All Killer No Filler isn't right for my collection. Am I missing something?

  9. I would like to know the most updated methods as of now. I am adding Jaguar today and want the best emulator that can be integrated with Launchbox, or a link to whatever workaround method gets Phoenix integrated. Last time I played Jaguar titles I found Retroarch to be useless and used standalone Phoenix for average compatibility. Hopefully things have changed since then. I still use standalone 4DO for 3DO and haven't found any reason to change.

you are right! the format is correct but for any strange reason these gaes aren't supported! i downloaded them from another site and they works! Even if the extension is the file type is the same!

    thank you!

Mine are all .lnx file extensions and work great. Glad you got it sorted.

So this is a thing that I'm sure many of have thought would work, but never accomplished. My wife and I just backed this Kickstarter (the 2-gun pack for ~$240 USD). It works on any screen - CRT, LCD, OLED, PDP, even PROJECTION! 5ms tracking/image processing time on top of any obvious screen latency. But dat accuracy... dang!

Right now, the only downside that I can see is that it requires a white border around the game content in order for the camera software to "see" the bounds of the screen. However, that's a small price to pay for ZERO calibration, being able to move around the room/couch, rotate the gun, etc. Seems super versatile and crazy accurate!

I want to learn more about this. Does the white border get created by this lightguns drivers, or is it something we have to generate for each game? Exciting nonetheless. I am a lightgun FREAK. My favorite genre, hands down. But I am disappointed in every offering on the market to the point I use a mouse for all my lightgun needs. I look forward to the day an accurate, intuitive lightgun hits the market that costs under $50 USD. If I had the skills I would make it myself.

You guys are extremely brave. I'm hoping that this turns out to be a great product but until its been made I'm too skeptical

Me too, although it looks reasonably legit. My only concern would be whether or not they finish the project to completion. I've seen a lot of Kickstarters run a good sprint but then fail to go the distance. But I think a generous discount should be given to all who donate.

  13. Ah, yes. Thank you. Sure beats using CD Mage to combine the multiple bins although it does make for a cleaner collection down the road.

Go to the folder with your roms and put *.cue in the windows search box, highlite them all with CTRL A and drag them onto the Launchbox window.

  14. What are your preferred methods for dealing with the multiple track files that are generated when importing games for CD based consoles like Playstation, Saturn, etc? I would like to know if any of you have automatic ways of dealing with this. Thanks to any who share their wisdom on this.

Around this time period, I had a 486 "multimedia" PC, so my CD-ROM needs were met, but I was curious about what games I was missing out on. These days, it's more about seeing how each system handled their interface & design, or how the PC ports were handled (like the 3DO Need For Speed port). I feel like it's impossible to get the full CD-i experience without having to put up with the awful controller, on top of everything else (not  sure how those Gravis gamepad looking ones are, but the stock spoon thing looks awful for games).

I remember condescendingly writing off the Playstation as another electronics company failing at entering the video game console market when it was announced, all because of Panasonic & Phillips not quite getting it right (or getting it all wrong, depending). I'm usually pretty good at predicting how these things will turn out, but I was dead wrong about that one!

I had 486 as well. I remember playing Tetris on it. Good times.

Download the "Portable folder with FS-UAE" version of 2.8.3.  Unzip it into the folder you want to run it from.  (May need/want to uninstall you 'installer' version 1st.)  This way everything for it is stored in that folder and you don't have to worry about the AppData folder at all.

I don't recall if the Kickstarts folder is there right away or if it creates it on first run.

Thank you. I realized this soon after I posted and is indeed the correct answer.

I had forgotten just how terrible CD-i was.  I had it when it was current, dad thought the software was total garbage, unloaded the unit onto a cousin I didn't really like and got a 3DO.  Even though both the CD-i and 3DO (and Amiga CD32) were all out about the same time, the CD-i was being pulled off the shelves within a couple of months.  The terrible software was only matched by the terrible hardware.  I hadn't gotten this working until now, and have already deleted it.  Had bought the unit specifically for Dragon's Lair - which required the hardware addon - no sale.

3DO was much much better, tons more software and usually games were in the $25 range, while the CD-i was more it the $35-40 range.  Out of the 3 I preferred the Amiga CD32 (Had an original launch A1000 and later an A500 and eventually an A1200 - along with several iterations of the Atari ST including the Falcon 030).  At any rate, a kick in the groin was preferable to dealing with a CD-i.

I actually like this era of gaming. I know the systems may have not been the best but they are very interesting to look at through emulation. I never had these systems so I spend a good deal of time on 3DO. I would like to do the same with the CDi when and if emulation progresses.

  18. Thank you for this tutorial. I'm running into a couple stumbling blocks in the beginning that I hope to resolve. First, the current "suite" 2.8.3 installs into the AppData folder and won't let me choose anywhere else. Second, in the fs-uae folder there is no Kickstarter folder to put the files in. If anyone has any advice or can direct me to an older version that follows this tutorial that would be awesome. And while it may be blasphemy, is there gamepad support? Admittedly, I'm a console and arcade man with the exception of modern Windows games. Lol.
