  1. I hope I don't get roasted for this, but for most users Kodi is going to be a much better Media Center experience. It would just take a lot of work to get Bigbox to do what Kodi does, though I have seen some people do it.

You don't need to use your own videos for Kodi. Kodi isn't the easiest thing to configure at first, but the apps you're looking for are called "add ons" and you can download them from within Kodi and also manually if you'd rather that.

  2. Sorry, lets be clear on terminology as well.

The highest level is "Platform Category". The standard ones are Console, Handheld, etc. You can create custom Platform Categories and nest "platforms" under them.

The lowest level is "Platform." This is typically a full console set or handheld set, e.g Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Since this is the lowest level, you can't nest more categories under this.

However, if you wanted all of your roms in one platform, you could feasibly add a custom tag and and then sort by those tags, and because you can technically treat a playlist like a platform, you could put each set into a playlist and then set the playlist to show up under the Platform Category... but the above method of just importing them as multiple platforms and then using Platform Categories is easier just in terms of sorting the roms.

So it looks like the only thing I can do is create an "SNES hacks" category, then create several new platforms underneath of it that are all set to use an SNES emulator and have their "game" folder set to whatever their corresponding subfolder on disk is, going against what I'm apparently supposed to do with LaunchBox.

Is there a better way to do this?

Thats the best method. You can import them as individual platforms, right click them, and set them only to show under the custom SNES Rom category. I'm not sure where you read this is a bad method, but I have custom platform categories for series, misc. and even favorites all of which have custom platforms in them that I arranged only to show up under those custom platform categories.

Edit: just to be clear if the roms are already seperated into folders, import a folder as a platform and give it a name. Then do the same for the other folders. Then right click the system names in launchbox one by one, click edit, go to the "parents" tab, uncheck "root" and check the custom platform category you created.

  4. Throwing this out there, but the issue isn't directly related to the Steamlauncher Plugin:

Is anyone else having trouble specifically with Cemu 1.26.2f (latest version) where the overlay refuses to pop up? This seems to be a problem specifically with the emulator (or at least my setup) and Steam. I know its not the plugin because I've used multiple methods to import the emulator (and the games) directly into Steam and the overlay still doesn't work, plus Lahma himself tried to help me troubleshoot it for a while and he's just as stumped. I'm hoping this is just a problem with this Cemu version as it worked in the past for me.

Also, I have tried a full fresh install of Cemu to the same results. I'm tired of messing with it atm but tomorrow I'll see if I can't install an older version of cemu to test.

    Thanks peeps!

Love this plugin! How do you get the big picture overlay to work with non steam games like you have in the image of super mario world attached to file download page? All I can seem to get is the ability to shift tab to the steam overlay.

In Steam options, you can turn on "show big picture overlay when in desktop mode". If that's what you're asking...

Did you ever figure this out? I decided to give Windows 11 another go and of course the same issue. I'm just gonna roll back to Windows 10 and call it a day. Apparently  people have various issues with various problems in Windows 11 that worked fine in 10.

I wouldn't go reverting back to windows 10 over this, since I can verify it works on windows 11 just fine. Are you in the Steam Beta program? Just reading back a few posts and that seems to have caused some problems.

  7. As always you're a helpful fountain of information! Yeah I was talking about the UAC. And don't worry, I'm not a computer guru but I knew enough to turn it back on after testing. 🤣

I'm about to go stop everything from running as admin as well. Thanks for the heads up on that!

I've tried both the genshinimpact.exe and the launcher.exe in every facet I could, same problem either way.

Putting it all together, however, it sounds like Genshin Impact "has a flag set that requires it to be run as admin" and for whatever reason mine isn't (could it be because I'm a weirdo and I install all my PC games, even ones from other launchers, in the steamapps/common folder on an internal drive that isn't C:), and hence the UAC messages every launch. And maybe this is somehow messing with the overlay for normal operations through LB cause it sounds like our setup was almost identical. That mine gives me a UAC message is the only difference. I've also looked up ways to make the message disappear and theres plenty of info so I'm not the only one having this problem with the game.

Its a fun game, and the standard controls aren't terrible so I honestly don't think its worth all this fuss. I just tend to take things when they don't work as a learning opportunity. I'm happy to just make sure I run steam as admin before I play it.

  8. VTech Socrates Clear Logo Pack

    View File

Please note that these are not genuine replications of the logos (I don't know how to use photoshop and the like). It's just a pack of logos I put together using flamingtext dot com badly approximating the actual logos. The system doesn't get a lot of love though, so I figured I'd make these available in the meantime if anyone wants to have some logos for this system.

All in all though I'm happy with the result. :D

  9. Thanks for following up. I got mad with it and put it down for a bit. Just tried again.

Does it work, yes and no.

    Things I did:

    • Set LB/BB Steam and SteamOverlayUI to all launch as admin.
    • Turned off LB Gamestart screens because after seeing it so many times I got mad with it haha
    • Tried importing genshinimpact.exe to launchbox
    • Tried importing launcher into LB instead of genshin exe
    • Turned off that windows nag notification (but I'm not happy about having to do that, still can't figure out why it comes up every time I launch).

Nothing made it work through launchbox with Steamlauncher. However something in the above did make the overlay work when launching through steam proper, which is good enough for me. I setup all my steam games in LB, but the truth is I don't open launchbox just to then launch a steam game so I'm good to dive into this game I've heard so much about this evening.

I do have one question: Is there any reason for me to not want to run all of these things as admin? Or should I just leave them like that from now on?

    Thanks peeps!

  10. More of a general question but has anyone been able to get the Steam overlay working on Genshin Impact?

    Things I've tried:

    • Importing GI exe into launchbox and launching with Steamlauncher enabled
    • Importing GI exe into Steam as a non-steam game and launching.
    • The above two methods while running Steam as an Administrator

The overlay just stubbornly refuses to show up.

    Relevant details:

    • I'm running in 4k windowed mode as GI doesn't let me run full screen.
    • I downloaded the game from the website, not EPIC
    • Every time I run the game I get that annoying Windows warning "Do you want to let this app make changes to this device?" (Can't make it stop, and wondering if this is somehow interfering with the overlay.)

    Any advice appreciated!

Did you guys have any problems importing Electron games via the LB import option? I can't seem to get the importer to recognize any files in my Electron games folder.

Usually when that happens just clicking "force import duplicates" works.

I've gone into very in-depth explanations of why imported games for other launchers don't "just work" a countless numbers of times in this thread and in private conversations with people who've messaged me. I really don't have the time, energy, or willpower to go over it all yet again..

I'm one of those people who messages you haha and I know. That's kind of why I stepped in to let them know it was impossible. I may have read the explanation countless times myself, and one more time in this most recent post, but that doesn't mean I understand it. 🤣

You as a user however, can fix the way your games are stored in LB and make the vast majority of your games work just fine with SteamLauncher... You just need to change the game's properties such that instead of launching the game via an abstract URL it is instead pointing to the game's EXE on your machine. It takes maybe 15-20 sec to change.. Give it a shot.

I should have been more clear. This method you described will work for any game that you can launch via exe. But, EPIC for instance (and I have no earthly idea why) doesn't let you launch (some, all?) games from the exe. If you click the exe it literally gives you instructions to go to the Launcher and doesn't launch, so as you can surmise you can't import the exe into launchbox and launch the game that way. The FF7 Remake is an example of this. I honestly have no idea how prevalent this is in EPIC or any other launcher as I get most of my games through Steam. Anyway, to circumvent this, you can import the launcher into Steam as a Non-Steam game to get those juicy rebinds.

As always, thanks for your work and this plugin. It is invaluable.

  13. This plugin unfortunately doesn't work with other launchers. EDIT: However, if the game launches via double clicking the .exe, you can import the exe into launchbox (rather than having launchbox auto import it) and this plugin should then work for the game through LB.

The author of the plugin is aware of this, but there is some kind of technical barrier that may be insurmountable. More information on that available in this thread.

You can still use the Steam Overlay for games that you can't launch via exe (an example of this might be an EPIC store game that the exe only redirects you to the launcher and doesn't launch the game)  But it won't work through launchbox, at least not without having to go through the launcher anyway.

You just import the Launcher exe into steam as a Non-Steam Game, launch the launcher through Steam and then your game through the launcher and the overlay will work. You CAN probably import the launcher.exe into launchbox, launch that, then launch the game through the launcher and it will probably work... haha. I haven't tried this because I don't use this method much, but let me know if it works!

P.S I loved the FF7 Remake but HATED the controls so I hope this helps someone.

A feature I'd love to see is custom menu hierarchies. For example when starting Big Box I'd like to see the platform list, but have "handhelds" as it's own category.

Somewhat related, I'd like to be able to nest platforms together,  for example putting Sega CD and 32X as sub-options under "Genesis" instead of each a separate platform.

Just a heads up, this is already a thing. You could technically do both, but in your case I wouldn't recommend doing both at the same time if you wanted any consistency to your list. Just use Platform Categories. When I open BigBox, I see Arcade, Handheld, Console, Computers (for old emulated computers, Commodore etc.), Computer Software (For DOS, Steam Windows Games etc.), and Favorites. These last two are custom; you can use this function however you want. Basically you're nesting "platforms" into a category higher up. You COULD make a platform category called Genesis for instance, and put Sega CD and 32x inside it and "handhelds" is autogenerated so you probably already have it. Anyway, didn't look like anyone addressed this specifically. It's simple to do, hit me up if you have any questions.

  15. You absolutely don't have to apologize! I was so happy I figured out what I perceived as a bug! You do this on your own time and it's appreciated. And yes I'm all setup loving BOTW on PC for so many reasons, but the main one is being able to map the what I consider horribly wonky native controls onto my Xbox elite.

Having said that the issue is 100 percent reproducible on my end. Every game I imported, I had to delete the version info to get them to launch with steamlauncher on, and again the game I already had imported in that system still works with the version info in there so if I had to guess it has something to do with a LB update that happened in the interim.

The issue is so niche its probably not even worth looking into but if anyone else runs into it at least we have record of the fix.

Just in case you do it get curious and want to try to reproduce it, this is how I import:

    • Drag rpx file from folder drop into launchbox
    • System Nintendo Wii U
    • Emulator: Cemu
    • Match to LB Database
    • Download all Media from LB and Emumovies (Remove roughly match checked)
    • Launch game from current location (which fyi all my roms are on a different drive than the emulator)
    • Custom Options "Look for PDF" and "Combine Roms with Matching titles" both checked (from use with other systems, didn't bother to uncheck)
    • Manually change title from rpx title to game title
    • Finish import

Just in case it matters steamlauncher would have been turned on during all my imports

Problem: try to launch game nothing happens

Fix: right click edit game delete any characters under version field

    Joy.

Thanks again for this awesome plug-in!

EDIT: Haha you're not going to believe this but the mystery deepens. I just went ahead and did another import, this time I imported Windwaker, follow the exact steps listed above. Sure enough, after import wouldn't launch. I went in and edited the version info, but this time I didn't delete it and save, I deleted it and added literally the words "something else" in the version box and the game launched after that. Absolutely bizarre.

Edit Edit: And for the final mind f***. I tested one more import, and this one was Shovel Knight. I picked this one because the rpx file was named close enough to the game title that LB would pick it up without me having to edit the title on import. Imported fine, matched to the database caught all the art. Go to launch, nothing. Now, because the rpx didn't need to be renamed, the version info was EMPTY already. So I ADDED "something else" to the version info, and then it launched fine. ?

  16. Can confirm the above. Have done this many times changing extention to .chd or to and from zip. Works like a charm. Just to be clear you're going into the data folder in launchbox finding the system xml and just find and replace. Recommend notepad++, it's free. Alternately, if you delete all the roms and just reimport, match to LB database but turn off all the art (you don't need to download it again) it only takes a couple minutes.

  17. So I'm running into an interesting case and sorry if this has been addressed before. I have 3 Wii U games in Launchbox, one of them works fine with Steamlauncher enabled and the Overlay works as well. Two of them won't launch with it enabled, no pop ups or anything when attempting to launch. I set the logging to verbose and let me know if you need all of that, but the only thing I can see in that log that indicates a problem is the same thing that pops up if the logging is set to "error":

2021-07-18 20:47:40 [Error] [GameLaunchingPlugin] [OnAfterGameLaunched] - An error occurred while creating/launching the Steam shortcut: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

My first thought was that it must have something to do with the titles of the games in Launchbox because everything else is the same, but I can't figure it out.

    AANNNNDD I'm a genius.

This is going to get weird, but I was able to fix it. HOW I was able to fix it is a little hard to explain and WHY this fixes it makes no sense to me but here goes:

-The game that worked I imported a long time ago (I just wanted to test the system etc.)

-The two games that did not work, I imported today

-I should note here that I'm importing .rpx files. I noticed that all three games had the title of the .rpx file amended to the title of the game in launchbox. So the one that works looks like "Star Fox Zero carrot" where carrot was the name of the rpx file. However, it didn't show up in the Launchbox/Edit title of the game like that. Instead the "carrot" part was below the title under "version" in Launchbox. Remember that this game worked.

-The same exact situation was happening to the other two, but for some reason when I clicked/edited the games and removed the title of the .rpx from the "version" info in launchbox... joy.

-Again, to be clear, the older game still works with that version info in there, but for whatever reason now, if you import rpx, you may have to delete the version info for steamlauncher to launch the game. ?

You never, ever would need a steam "version". Steam lets you add any external program you want to your library. Just add Launchbox and you're set.

Install Windows, run Steam in Big Picture and you have a seamless integration.

This also seems like a good place / time to remind / introduce people to this LB Plugin:

Basically allows you to use the Big Picture overlay (including binding custom controls etc.) to anything launched through LB/BB. In a word, its incredible. Per game controller configs for random DOS games? It's got you. Need to launch a modded version of skyrim from a seperate launcher that doesn't allow overlay support even its imported to steam? It's got you. I suspect it'll become a staple of LB on the Steam Deck.

  19. Just a heads up, Windows 10 is all about the notifications. I'm not even sure how but I get like netflix notifications news notifications all kinds of other things and these can pop you out of games, even if it says "Windows held this notification" after you close the game down, it probably didn't haha. You can try turning them off and seeing if that helps. Whats weird is that the notifications don't pop me personally out of every game or emulator, in fact, I didn't even notice it until recently when I got Mass Effect Legendary on Steam, and for some reason it was getting pushed out of fullscreen.

You can also try toggling windows game mode on and off to see if it helps (this is more mythology than actual science) but its worth a try.

  20. Yes. I didn't know cso could be used for ps2 but as I understand its not lossless compression. Gzip is. Meaning if you compress to CSO you lose some of the data which to me is a no no even if it saves more space. Both CSO and Gzip are lossless*

.rvz is newer and equally lossless and it's compression level is pretty excellent and is fully supported by dolphin so no need to decompress. I'm working on a 1g1r gamecube set I'm currently at almost 600 games at 470 gigs total for the full set.

Edit: I should note that if you gzip your ps2 games, on first launch with pcsx2 it'll take an extra couple of seconds to launch as pcsx2 has to create some kind of cache or something, but its only for the first launch.

I haven't gotten around to doing a 1g1r set for ps2, I have about 660 games all gz and it's about 980 gigs, just fyi.
