  1. Hi Folks,

Could really use some help. I'm using Mame through Retroarch. Everything was fine until last week. I'm not sure what I did, but now whenever I load a Mame game, the controls don't respond. To be more specific, I'm using a PS4 controller. Select and Start seem to work. I can load credits. But the directional pad, stick, or buttons don't respond. I tried to press TAB to go into MAME controls, but then the Mame menu appears, but I can't move up or down through the menu with the controller or with the arrow keys on my keyboard. I can only press TAB to get out of the menu.

    Assistance would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

  2. I've been having the same problem for quite a while. I can't get my xbox 360 controller or my ps4 controller to work. For that reason, I'm beginning to think something else is the culprit. I've found numerous posts about this issue all over the internet, but no solution.

I did find values to replace the ini file but they only partially worked (d-pad only).

Any suggestions would be appreciated - but even better- I would really appreciate the data for dreamcast and arcade INI settings (paddemul.ini) for both a ps4 controller and a xbox 360.

  3. Hey Folks,

I have a split set of Mame 185 set up in Launchbox. I downloaded a Split set - Mame189.

I know I should have just gotten update packs, but I didn't. Is there a smooth way to update using whole split sets.

Related question - is it worth updating?

    Thanks,

  4. Hi Folks,

I love Launchbox and started making good progress installing multiple platforms and games.

Everything was going fine until this morning. I already installed Arcade, multiple Atari consoles, Super Nintendo, and WonderSwan with no problems. This morning I tried to install my Genesis library, and when it had completed and I tried to launch Big Box, it crashed Launchbox and won't open Big Box. It is possible that I adjusted something minor in between last night and today and don't know what it was (I did move certain media files - manuals, images, and videos) to another drive - but I've been doing that all along with no problem. I've since deleted the Genesis platform, but still no luck.

So now, Launchbox starts with no problems.  Games load without any problems. But when I try to Launch Big Box from within Launchbox, it crashes Launchbox, I see a very brief working symbol (Windows blue swirl) and then nothing. I don't see it in task manager either.

When I try to Launch Big Box from outside of Launchbox, nothing loads either - but it doesn't crash Launchbox. Launchbox stays open.

I'm on  Windows 10, pretty new machine. Large library but using SSD for Launchbox and media folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update - I installed another instance of Launchbox on another drive and test imported one game - and Big Box works fine. So clearly I messed up something on the other installation. If all else fails, how can I move my library (not the actual roms), media, and playlists over to this new installation of Launchbox?

  5. Has anyone noticed certain emumovies downloads hanging? I've been trying to add small amounts of games at a time, and every 20 or so games, a certain one will just hang for up to five minutes (either downloading a video or music).

Eventually, it produces an error, and the rest of the content goes through, but I wish there was a way to skip these troublesome downloads slowing the whole process.

    Any ideas?

  6. Hey Folks,

Recently made the big switch to PC for my media center. Signed up for the annual license (for now) and am loving Launchbox.

After tinkering, I was able to set up Retroarch, import SNES games, and get my dualshock 4 set up, but I still have a few issues I can't seem to figure out:

Once Retroarch starts a game, I can no longer use my keyboard except for alt-delete.I want to use the controller strictly for in game  controls and use my keyboard for certain shortcuts. For example, I'd like to be able to use my keyboard to:

    A) back out of a game and go back to Launchbox

    B) save states and load states

    C) try shaders.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  7. Hey Folks,

I know there are numerous discussions on the forums regarding HDD vs. SSD, but I’m hoping my inquiry is sufficiently different to merit a brief discussion.

My brand new computer (thank you DOS76, SentaiBrad, alexis524, patrel, and lordmonkus) which will only serve as a Media Center (Launchbox and Kodi) has the following specs:

    Intel Core i5-7500 Processor 3.40GHz
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5
    8GB DDR4-2133 RAM
    1TB 7,200RPM Hard Drive
    Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit

As you can see, the drive it came with is a 1TB HDD. I have settled on getting an SSD and installing the OS (Windows 10) on that drive. I will be keeping my ROMs on an external USB 3.0 HDD (Large library of over 100 Gigs - and I intend to play all types of games from Atari to Dreamcast).

My question is this, to have the smoothest running version of Launchbox:

Option1 - Should I put the Launchbox program on the same SSD drive as the OS. Or will placing both programs (Windows and LB) on the same SSD drive slow down Launchbox?

Option 2 - Or  - Should I put Launchbox on a separate internal SSD drive (which I will have to purchase - this is getting expensive) with other applications (Kodi, Chrome, etc.)

Option 3 - Or - Should I not bother with a second SSD, and put Launchbox and other applications on the HDD that already comes with the machine? If the difference is speed would be barely noticeable, than this or option 1 would be best for my wallet.

Brief follow-up question, after I settle on one of the options above - where should I put the Launchbox folder with all artwork and videos?

In advance, thanks for the help.

  8. Thanks everyone for the help. I did go with Microcenter's Powerspec 151

    • Intel Core i5-7500 Processor 3.40GHz
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5
    • 8GB DDR4-2133 RAM
    • 1TB 7,200RPM Hard Drive
    • Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit
    • 24x DVDRW Drive
    • Multi-in-One Memory Card Reader
    • 10/100/1000 Network
    • 802.11ac Wireless
    • Display Not Included

It was $100 more than I wanted to spend, but it did seem like the best bang for the buck, and good for the foreseeable future. Now starts the work of setting it up.....

The one I originally linked has a GT 705 in there, so yes a GPU can fit. in fact, one comes with it. It's not an emachine case or anything like that, so it could probably do a half size GTX card, or a low profile card. I'm sorry, but that link I sent is still a good ass deal for $500 straight, pre-built. I would get that if I had a need for a smaller machine like that.

Edit: Like I said, it's not a perfect machine, but if you want something no hassle, that's under budget (though only while on sale), then it's a good machine to do this specific job. It's not gonna wow you on brand new emulation or games, and you could always upgrade the RAM and GPU later; But it comes in under budget, and you wont have to put it together. The upgrades can be something you could figure out in a year. I also don't like that Windows 7 is in that machine. I would certainly change that out to Windows 10. I just installed W10 on to a new machine for my mother in law, and we thought she was gonna have to buy it. After logging in with her account, that I did the Windows 7 to Windows 10 free upgrade on, Microsoft gave her W10 for free on her new machine. I just Installed Windows 10 Home, skipped the key part, logged her in, and it was done automatically. So if you ever did that process, you might have W10 for free.

Edit 2: I also haven't seen that video that Monkus posted, but I assume that's someone building the machine by the thumbnail. If you hunt, or look hard enough like that, then of course you could do better for less. Pre-built comes a bit more expensive. Too big or too small, and the price also goes up even if you're building it.

Thanks again for the response, I think I'm down to these two.

    The one you suggested: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883101543&ignorebbr=1

    and

    http://www.microcenter.com/product/474288/G151_Desktop_Computer#

Unless someone has another option, between these two, which sounds better?

Hopefully my last post - aside from letting you know which I went with and profusely thanking the community for the 10th time.

  10. This sounds good, but I worry that the CPU is underpowered? I see similar prices for packages with i5 processors. Shouldn't I be looking for an I5 or I7 at a minimum to run Bigbox with videos, music, artwork, and higher-end games?

  11. Slight confusion - what's the difference between a Graphics card and a GPU?

Which one is better for emulation?

Are they both (Graphics cards and GPUs) upgradable?

IS the HP (https://computers.woot.com/offers/hp-pavilion-560-intel-i5-rx480-1tb-desktop?ref=w_cnt_cdet_pc_dly_tl) graphic card  (or is it a GPU?)  Is it good enough for high end dreamcast / PS2 emulation - and Launchbox with all effects on?

Is it upgradable down the line?

Once again, I really want to thank you for the help. I'd love to purchase something today or tomorrow.

That may struggle with the PS2 and Dreamcast stuff because it only has Intel HD graphics and there is obviously no room for a GPU in there. Also that comes with FreeDOS and not Windows so you would need a Windows license also in order to use LB and BB

Thanks so much for the quick feedback. Now I'm starting to understand the requirements. Getting there...

What about this one - https://computers.woot.com/offers/hp-pavilion-560-intel-i5-rx480-1tb-desktop?ref=w_cnt_cdet_pc_dly_tl ? or is the original posting above from Newegg still better due to the i7? The $50 is not a big saving, but I was also considering the Windows 10 inclusion. Also, not sure about the graphics card on the HP.

  13. Hi Folks,

I'm hoping to get some suggestions for a new PC. Links would be extra-appreciated - but I don't mind doing some digging either.

    Here are my criteria:

    1. To be used as a media center for primarily: LAUNCHBOX (BIG BOX) , Kodi, and some light internet browsing. It should be able to run LAUNCHBOX with all bells & whistles (plug-ins and graphical effects) with no problems.
    2. It should be able to handle Dreamcast and PS2 games up to the limitations of the the emulators - not the computer.
    3. I'd like to spend under $500 - the lower the better - but not at the expense of losing any of the prerequisites below.
    4. It will connect to a projector through HDMI
    5. I will NOT be playing any PC games - only retro-gaming.
    6. I'd prefer a mini size - but this is not an important issue. Just a preference.
    7. Hard drive size not too important as all ROMs will be kept on an external hard drive.
    8. I'd prefer something pre-built - but am totally willing to build it myself if I can save at least $100.

Any help would be awesome. I can't seem to find good and recent suggestions to fit my needs.

    Thanks,

    D
