Honestly I haven't tried the entire process, but under the Activity tab in the menu at the top there's "My Activity Streams" and you can supposedly create a new one to follow a thread.

Yes, didn't even think of that. Works great! Very easy to set up. I go to my selected forum topic and "Follow" i, then I go to the Activity tab -> My Activity Streams -> Content I Follow
